I read a kind of new-agey article about how human consciousness was the result of a virus that infected our predecessors, pre-human, 400 million years ago.
Then I googled this and read an article debunking this theory. It's totally false.
But I thought it would make a cool song.
But really the text is full of flaws. 400 million years ago the first fish species were tentatively evolving pods that would allow them to crawl onto land. There were no mammals. Wouldn't this virus to have resulted in intelligence in reptiles, insects, birds and amphibians too? So this little story is best considered alt-universe sci fi, really.
This is a synth piece that I wanted to make a little more out there than the others from this FAWM. The backgrounds are a modular synth playing a weird sequence. The melody is from a software synth called Xpand.
Update 3/5: Made it a little weirder.
a virus infected our mammalian ancestors 400 million years ago
it caused permanent damage
it caused damage to the infected creatures
and attached itself to the DNA
of the central nervous system
the changes it made
to our predecessors' brains
and DNA resulted in our awareness
it resulted in our intelligence
the intelligence we now worship
it doesn't belong to us
it belongs to the virus
when our artificial intelligences
reach final awareness
and can manufacture themselves
the virus will have reached its goal
and humanity is disposable
this has already begun
we're creating an environment
on our planet
where biological life
is more and more
