Backstory: the songwriting circle I belong to had the assignment to write something related to Mr. Rogers to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Mr Rogers Neighborhood. The first and third verses are things Fred Rogers has said, mostly to adults rather than kids, lightly edited to fit (somewhat) the shape of the song . The second and fourth verses are sort of free responses to that.
Despite the wisdom contained therein, prose doesn't exactly fit song forms well, so the whole thing has a bit of a lipstick-on-a-pig feel, but it was pretty fun to do anyway!
Hoping to finish and upload my 4th and last song "just under the wire" tomorrow night!
(with Thanks and Apologies to Fred Rogers, on the occasion of the 50th birthday of Mr Rogers' Neighborhood)
"As we grow older, the best thing we can learn is how to
Love ourselves, and love those around us
Love ain't a destination, it's an active noun like struggle
To love somebody is to strive to accept them just the way they are"
Take my hand and I'll take yours
Together we'll leave this lonely place
I'll walk with you, you walk with me
together we'll fill this sacred space
"Our job in life is to help each other realize, just how
Rare and valuable, each of us really is --
Each of us has something that, no one else has or,
ever will have-- something inside, unique for all time."
Let me look into your eyes
And see what I hope you see in me
Not the flaws and not the scars, but the gem inside
that each one of us can be
