AFP: So Tim kindly emailed me 6th Feb (I KNOW) with a drum beat, shaker, and 2 rather spooky keyboard sounds. Sadly it took a while to get my creative hat on, and then the collaborations were building up etc etc. It wasn't until yesterday that I finally started having a proper play around. This of course meant it could never really be a proper collaboration if it was to be uploaded in time (I'm busy all tomorrow), so I decided to just run with it and put together the whole track without any further assistance. In an ideal world, we'd have collaborated properly, so I apologise to Tim and will make up for it next year! He is the FAWM OG after all....
I seem to have been a little sombre in a lot of my lyrics this year, and this one is no different (well, by subject matter). it's about my childhood best mate Rob, who sadly passed away at the age of 37 after a second bout with cancer. I hadn't seen him for about 10 years, but we kept in touch on Facebook. As a 5 year old kid, our family moved into a pub in a sleepy town called Dronfield. Rob was my neighbour, four years my senior, and I immediately struck a friendship with him; possibly because I could get him free coke and lemonade whenever he wanted. He got me into so much stuff, he's the reason I support Sheff Utd, and most importantly he got me into listening and playing music (Def Leppard were my first love!). I didn't want to be sad in my lyrics, so they're just about 3 memories..
1. we used to recreate WWF moves a lot, naturally, and once he threw me into a wall.
2. he used to get under his mini pool table and he would convince me that it was a spaceship and of course I was NOT allowed to look outside the duvet. Whilst in space, he once 'died' and his dying words were "I... forgot to... tell you... the controls". OMG I was screaming.
3. We used to do podcasts before podcasts existed (didn't we all though). We'd chat shit, and play Def Leppard, Metallica, Pearl Jam, etc etc. It was a good fucking show.
Anyway, this is my 14th song - I'll update my profile with a note if you fancy a read. Thanks again, Tim!
P.S. I don't mind if people misinterpret sounds in my songs, but that is a BASS SOLO OK.
oddbod: well I don’t know if I kindly emailed Ad or if I just threw a spanner into his already busy schedule but hey, I’m glad we finally got to collab. Well chuffed with how this turned out. I wanted Ad to do something with my lounge-ish loop that would be a whole different direction from where I would go and he’s achieved exactly that. Job done.
Candy apple red
Gushing from the hole in my head
The buttress corner
Misshapen by our tomfoolery
Drape the pool table
In a duvet and slide underneath
Rob died before
he taught me the controls of our ship
Put us on the television, put us the television
We’ll settle for pirate radio
