This started about 10 days ago after Scott inquired about a potential collab. He followed that up with an in-depth document of his concept brainstorm technique for unearthing a lyric idea. I was quite impressed. Then life turned crazy so I wasn't able to work on it. I finally did sit down and give it a whirl and through my sleep-deprived late-FAWM haze started making some weird choices. First was the time signature in 5/4, it went all downhill from there. Someone had mentioned Fleet Foxes vibe on another song I did so I had that in my head while creating. I originally heard more of a Sleeping At Last vibe but it definitely took its own turn. I've never written a song in 5/4 so I'm proud of how I managed to finish it. I was a little harsh on my output but Scott graciously said I was crazy. Thanks for a great collab idea brother!
Concept started after listening to Satellite Kite by Beautiful Eulogy-don’t know them? You have homework. The line I wrote first in my head didn’t make my edits, but it goes like this: Couldn’t make that curve without the pull of the string.
I’m a Christian. Have been most of my 5 decades. At times this faith has felt limiting and that there were periods of FOMO (Fear of missing out) long before social media made this a pandemic. But decades give you hindsight and I see where I believe God has fulfilled His purpose and design for me to be part of His story, with situations and limits; the wind and weather, fabric frame and string so to speak. I’m also currently an aerospace engineer and the idea of the design of wind borne seeds vs kites, aerodynamically, in the same wind, have entirely different purposes. Seeds are many, without limits, and most do not survive. Kites on the other hand have personal attention and are useless without their ‘boundary conditions’ as we engineers like to call them; they achieve their purpose and beauty under certain limits. Remove the limit and the kite instantly loses its direction and can’t achieve its purpose.
Did Jacob do an awesome job, or what?
He mentions Fleet Foxes. We never spoke about Fleet Foxes whatsoever, but there is a verse in Fleet Foxes’ Helplessness Blues which was influential in my writing these lyrics:
“I was raised up believing I was somehow unique
Like a snowflake distinct among snowflakes, unique in each way you can see
And now after some thinking, I'd say I'd rather be
A functioning cog in some great machinery serving something beyond me.
Thank you Jacob.
SEEDS OR KITES
Lyrics by Scott Lake
My foot disturbs it’s whitened head
It’s parachutes a plenty now lightly drifting on the breeze
I wonder how many there were before?
Gotta be more than thirty three.
They are tumbling and twisting across the way
some were trapped in nets of spiders, not making it very far
Some crushed underfoot, some head for the stars.
As I squint to see one rise
There’s a kite, green, gold and red against the sky
A smiling child guiding it’s flight.
There are seeds and there are kites
Set adrift, or in controlled flight
Both ride the wind, one is heavy and one is light.
There are seeds and there are kites.
Sky growing darker across the way
Clouds gathering and forming a slurry of gray
Speed of the wind bends the kite’s frame
Seeds are all gone now at least for today.
There’s winding the string to bring the kite in
There’s resistance and yearning; the string under strain
A beautiful curve dressed in green gold and red.
Tonight kite rests out of the rain.
if you could choose, and you do so it seems
A kite or a seed, which would you be?
What is our purpose, our grand design?
Seed set adrift or a kite on a line?
Seed set adrift or a kite on a line?
