Week 1: Jobs

Liner Notes:

The week one challenge suited me fine -- I really did give my notice yesterday, though rather more politely than this might suggest.

I do intend to get around to my typical more well-crafted Americana, but the straight forward riff rock keeps coming out of me.

Lyrics:

If you want to go I don't want to go
I don't want to go where you want to go

If you want me to I don't want to do
I don't wanna do what you want me to

consider this my notice

what you want from me I don't want to be
I don't want to be what you want to be

if you think you've seen all there is of me
there is lots of me you will never see

consider this my notice

I kinda feel this song needs more lyrics than it has, but it works as is, sure.

I'm going to have this in my head when I hand in my notice at my current job. Love the rock!

Your versatility is amazing. I just listened to "Get Up and Go" and then this one, and your vocal style couldn't fit more perfectly for either one. You're my hero!

ROCK!!! This kicks ass. You've got that growly thing going on with your voice, and you sound really angry. I'm going to download this - excellent stuff.

The riff and lyrics go so well together...there is magic in keeping it simple. Cool.

whaaaat i thought i'd commented on this before. OUTSTANDING rock song, i love vocal phrases that repeat and play on a couple words/sounds (see my nisku song), so your verses are way up my alley. you may have given your notice politely, but this song seems to betray a rather more sinister farewell you might have wanted to bid? everything about this works for me, from the sharp turns to the abrupt ending and the doiwnright confrontational mixing on the chorus.

"what you want from me I don't want to be / I don't want to be what you want to be" ... so gosh darn true!

Ha! Excellent track, why am I getting 'pachabels canon' big_smile that can't be right!
Really - really well done to you.

Apparently there is more of you to see because I wasn't expecting this at all. I totally dig the simplistic riff and the distorted vocals on the chorus. Really cool, and I love that some of the people I have come to really like on FAWM seem to be switching it up a bit this year. In my opinion we could all use more dirty rock songs! \m/

Rock 'n' Roll!!! What a great attitude song. I especially like the unpretentious matter of fact ending.

If you are leaving your work, I'm actually sorry to hear that but I am sure you will do well wherever you go. Cool song.

The guitar tone reminds me of YES...sorta...maybe a little dryer and not as reverb-y.
You have a nice growl. I like these RAWK numbers.

Phil's secret wake-up recipe: a cup of strummin' e-nergy blended with an equal amount of back-bending-mouthful verse, and a pinch of scream (add to taste). Me gusta. Makes me want to break out the Sweet Water (not to be confused with Sweetwater) albums.

I'm trying to pinpoint what exactly this makes me think of. Either way, I like it quite a bit.

    YEEEAAAAHHH

you realize that I am going to write 14 rock songs just to make you happy, right? It is my DENSITY.

Anyway this is great. Your vocals are awesome. RIFFS YES

I love this swelling of rock songs on FAWM. Gone are the mopey singer-songwriters! Here comes the ROOCCCKK

You are so made of awesome.
Love it when you bring the rawk.
That chorus made my face fall off the first time I heard it.

Best of luck in your future endeavors! Whatever it was, they didn't deserve you. Jerks. I'll never patronize that business.

That said, I think you should put "public-service" or "anti-seasonal-affective-disorder-bomb" in your tags. Seriously, you are brightening up this ridiculous winter. Thank you for your public service, citizen!

RAWK! I am severely drum machine disabled.

As great as your Americana work is, I do love this turn towards rock. You have the chutzpah and the voice for it. I'm jealous!
  •  oddbod 1 month ago
you seem to be getting a bit more rock this FAWM than previously or am I remembering wrongly?
ace performances as per usual. love the crunchy sound of that guitar.
    drums a bit quiet perhaps?
  • Great tune, Phil, awesome attitude captured, and killer riff.
    Spot on!
  •  Scott McBride 1 month ago
The riff rock suits you just as nicely as the Americana. I say go for it! This is really awesome. Love the pitch-bend after "notice."
  •  mikejames 1 month ago
wow-cool! you can really rock when you want to. great song-great production-great vox and rocking guitar. what attitude this song has!
  •  G Slade 1 month ago
..those are some mean ass vox....an A1 playing on the guitar...enjoyed this one
  • chrishensongs 1 month ago
Grinding hook. Crunchy verse. Screaming chorus. Furious final drum 'blat!' I feel as though I've just been spanked hard. Spanked by the Phil Norman guitar of righteous indignation. And it feels oddly satisfying.

Chris Henson's review: "If this song doesn't kick your ass, then you don't have an ass!"
  • rob barreda 1 month ago
You sir, are quickly becoming my favorite FAWM artist. This was awesome. Sounds like your channeling Scott Weiland and the brothers from STP. Great choice on the distortions.
  •  mike skliar 1 month ago
great blast of rock and roll there! love the guitars! I can picture a real shreddy solo in there too...
    fun song!
