This is based on a conversation I read online between a religious person and an atheist, and it shows that not all such conversations of this nature need to be hostile, and there really ISN'T a "winner', either way. I worked the conversation into a rhyming scheme. Not at easy task.
And I have no idea how to put this to music just yet. I'll get there.
(Just so we're clear, I am an admitted atheist. But I wanted to illustrate both sides here.)
It's a long read. Fair warning.
Hey! Good day to you!
Oh, hey there. Likewise!
It certainly seems to be - look at these bright skies!
So, I wanted your opinion on this, if I could
Do you believe in -
Oh, boy - THIS oughta be good...
- the word of The Divine, The Creator, "I Am"?
Nope. I'm sorry, I don't believe in that, man.
Why not? It's obvious His presence abounds!
This sounds like blasphemy!
I don't care how it sounds.
What's obvious to ME is that there is no proof!
No matter how many agree on something, it doesn't make it truth!
What IS proof?
Having tangible evidence, of course.
Define "tangible evidence", and cite your source...
Documented and repeatable outcomes, for one!
The second? Scientists.
Whoa! Hold up, there, son!
So you're saying scientists huddled up in their biz,
Agreeing something's evidence was worthy?
No, it just IS!
It's tangible! You can see it! The end! That's the deal!
"It just IS?" How do you prove it to those who can't see or feel?
They just have to trust those who've truly been schooled!
Well, gee! for a minute there, you almost had ME fooled!
Forgive me, but this isn't about right or wrong
But about if people are worthy of a faith so strong!
The Good Book was written by PEOPLE.
And our biases and inferrals put us to the test.
Hence, the Good Book's proper reading is with His meditation.
Faith means knowing He'll pass on information
That He wants us to use, regardless of compliance
Our own realities limit us -
But what about science?
All of its evidence CANNOT be ignored!
Evidence of WHAT, exactly? Hear me out, you're implored -
Is it possibly, if I may be a speculator,
The reverse engineering of an unseen Creator,
Which they apply how they want? Your argument's flawed!
Okay, so nothing is certain - that includes God.
Fair enough. Understandable - and that's humility
Yes, even us Believers have the ability
To know that we DON'T know beyond what they teach
And understanding everything is out of our reach
Which is why we NEED God to help us along.
No, your kind make it quite clear who's right and who's wrong.
Haha...um...well...we're sinners, all,
And just like the next guy, to pride we befall.
Knowitalls exist in all walks of life.
They have a feeling of certainty, despite all their strife,
Ironically based in UNcertainty - go figure!
Their realities, to them, seem so much bigger.
People are funny, I surely won't deny,
But I don't think they can comprehend, and neither can I.
It's as if you're proving my point, I must say
So, then, why have your beliefs not gone astray?
Because I do understand all the logical faults
And what I see as proof isn't what we all exalt.
I'm not trying to impose, just to have faith and live
And I'll thank God if they can take what I give.
That seems pretty cheap, and week after week,
Believers impose constantly - you do as we speak!
You're trying to convince me of what should be my lot!
C'mon, give me a break!
Actually, I'm not!
I'm fully aware that you've made up your mind
And there are imposers galore of all kinds.
Validation, they seek - convince them, prove yourself right.
And by that rationale, I must bring this to light:
If my having this talk proves imposition, the same
Can be said of you - for you're also to blame!
Now, wait just a minute - no need to get brisant.
Are you saying that I'm a hypocrite?
Like sin, hypocrisy plagues every face!
There's no getting around it, thus the need for God's grace.
Furthermore, you say "hypocrite" like it was a slight -
What's wrong with being the same? Equality, right?
But to answer your question..."If the shoe fits!"
Again, that's cheap - your argument's on the fritz!
Are you running for office? Because it seems pretty clear
That you don't really side with ANYONE here!
I'm no politician! Ha - but that, my friend, is accurate -
I just side with God, for no mortal's immaculate.
But if people hear this, I expect and predict
Those who find offense to take it - they love to nit-pick,
No matter of race, religion, class, left or right, straight or gay,
Or any other social structure!
"Social structure", you say?
So you admit that religion is a HUMAN invention!
Now, now, now...it doesn't seem like you're paying attention!
Just because humankind can give something a name
It does NOT mean they created it just the same!
That having been said, I do find your thought plausible
It just seems to -
I'm sorry, this is impossible!
I'm starting to feel like a hamster gone dizzy!
Your circular arguments put my wheel in a tizzy!
Yes, arguments are circular, that's certainly granted..
And we seem to get nowhere, with how long we've ranted.
If you've lost joy in our talk, then I won't twist your arm!
I appreciate that, and no foul, no harm.
Besides, I gotta run - I'm renewing my lease.
Nice! Good luck with that! Take care!
