Feb 2 folk pop odd-time-signature
Hello all. Here's a simple thing to clear away the cobwebs.
I'm starting FAWM the way I usually finish it - overtired and under the weather - but presumably that means I'll end the month well-rested and full of beans. Excellent. Looking forward to it.
As usual, all kinds of comments are welcome, critical or otherwise. Have a great FAWM, everyone.
stumble out of bed, smack the shower head
toothpaste kisses and lazy love
when the passion goes, something better grows
toothpaste kisses and lazy love
sitting in the park, catch a little spark
a lover to lean on
who needs elegance? we love like elephants
slapstick kisses and sleepy love
in our youth we know, with one mighty blow
we'll bring down the giant
but as we get old, here's my hand to hold
those the giant has cast aside
when it's hard to cope, share a little hope
a lover to lean on
let the poets bleed, turns out all i need
toothpaste kisses and lazy love
i'll be for you what you've been for me
a lover to lean on
will you share with me, keep some spare for me
toothpaste kisses and lazy love

Absolutely delightful sentiment, and I love the instrumentation, including your personal, melodic vocal. The piano flourishes are charming - maybe my favorite thing about the song, but I love everything about it.

Iโm gonna go through all your songs..
Your wonderfully talented...
@meetstargazer Feb 17
This is so sweet it hurts my teeth. ๐
@pinky Feb 15
Amazing lyrics and just an enveloping, warming performance. "toothpaste kisses and lazy love" is a brilliant line/concept!
@rustyp Feb 12
Well, I guess I put my proverbial foot in my proverbial mouth didn't I? I just noticed you're from Australia, so world music is all music? ๐ Anyway, thanks for showing me how an odd time can fit so nicely in to a folky warm sound. So nice. ๐
@rustyp Feb 12
Listened at least twice. ๐
@rustyp Feb 12
So nice. ๐
I've always thought that 5/4 was the realm of jazz or world music. But you've made it work so elegantly here.
@sacraficialglam Feb 10
Gorgeous music. sweet lyrics. The phrase on the piano just seals this one for me. I keep thinking about my daughters whom after every nightly toothbrushing smother me in these kisses before heading off to bed. lovely.
@leah0k Feb 10
Super good. This song is like the perfect pancake. I feel like it belongs in a cute romantic comedy.
@caterwauler Feb 7
When I realized it was an odd-time signature, it was around the half of the song. It flows so well, yet in an odd manner.
As always, your gorgeous vocals shine above this peaceful world of sounds. A beauty.
@fearlessflight2014 Feb 7
You are the best , you have personified my marriage. Gorgeous!
@spinhead Feb 6
I don't understand how every year I feel like I've forgotten that you're my favorite singer and then I remember all over again.
You make 5/4 sound effortless. You're the Einstein of odd time. And lovely lyric, of course.
@hanley Feb 6
Beaut little number this one! Full of charm and seemingly simple, but thereโs a lot to love in it so Iโm sure it was highly orchestrated, or at least masterfully conceived. Great job๐๐ป
@leepat Feb 5
lovely images throughout, but my favourite is the elegance-elephants rhyme;
full of beans!
@jbp123 Feb 4
Gorgeous
@judypie Feb 4
Ahhhh so romantic! Lol at the elegance/elephants line - fantastic stuff!
@autoclamp Feb 3
Warm, delightful, and minty fresh. Thank you for the early afternoon elixir, sir. This is feel-good music of the saccharine-free variety.
@oldlostjohn Feb 3
A sweet song, beautifully performed. The odd time signature flows smoothly and the lyrics/vocals has such a rhythmic yet relaxed feel.
@aprilm Feb 3
So simple yet so effective. I can hear a violin being aded in there to complement the whimsical piano melody... Nicely done.
@degausser Feb 3
Hello Mike. Your song is really beautiful. It has a sad feel to me even though the lyrics are not sad! I especially like the piano.
@adamhill Feb 3
Such a sweet gentle song, a perfect thing to listen to early in the morning. I marvel at how natural you make the odd time signature sound, it just flows right along.
@izaakalexander Feb 3
the 5 beat just glide-waltzes along effortlessly... a summer breeze of a song... a bit wistful and sentimental... the way you sing 'lean on' is a beautiful touch. Top shelf writing!
@susyblue Feb 3
Ohhhhhhh. Can I just say ohhhhhh...? I'll try to gush but as you know it's hot today. Let's just say I think this is the bees knees I love everything about this song
@jendistad Feb 3
This is beautiful: the lyrics, sentiment, performance--all of it. I like the unexpected time signature on this; it works really well. Great job. (=
@echovoodoo Feb 3
So comfortably sweet. Your spare elegance continues unabated. The waltz-iness despite that regularly missing beat is pretty cool.
I've tried strumming my uke in something other than 4/4 a few times, and I always felt so uncomfortable that I gave up.
@oddbod Feb 2
You just donโt disappoint Mike. I never cease to marvel at the touching elegant simplicity of your lyrics. Thereโs slways some deft touch in your arrangements too that make me think why didnโt I think of that and here itโs those lonely piano chords. That piano is full of character by the way. Real or sampled I wonder.
@shortdan Feb 2
This is bloody great stuff. Not much I can offer other than admiration! Beautiful vocal delivery and the melody is beaut too. Lyrics invoked a smile. Awesome start (going in for another listen...) ๐
@steffan Feb 2
really really really great. Had to listen to it twice. I love the lyrics and your performance and the 5/8 give it this relaxed but immediate feel.
I love it.
@coolparadiso Feb 2
Just so easy to listen to and very nice lyrics.
@adforperu Feb 2
I think I probably overuse the word 'lilting' when I comment on your songs, but it's damn true alright. You always have a lovely rhythm going between the guitar and your voice. The lyrics paint quite a picture too. Beautiful start my friend.
@sherrycanary Feb 2
Sweet song and cool rhythm
Elegance and elephants cracked me up
Nice work plowing through to get on the board
@lcad Feb 2
Really charming, great to hear new work from you. I love the sentiment of 'toothpaste kisses' it's one of those things that we all know but it doesn't have a formal name. Beautiful.
@frey Feb 2
this sounds like pastel colored cotton candy clouds slowly descending upon earth ... i love it, so sweet โฅ
@mdavisto Feb 2
Mike, your music is to me as a glass of cold water in a desert. Thank you for this.
Oh, and, that piano is a super effective accompaniment.
@kludge Feb 2
I like the little odd-time turnarounds!
@bradbrubaker Feb 2
Glad you're back. A masterful odd time signature turning an easy waltz into one with a little stumble. Matches the song theme perfectly. Downloading.
@driftwood1 Feb 2
Sweet lyric and cool groove. The piano adds a nice spice too it as well. Awesome all around.
@chasingandromeda Feb 2
It took me a few bars to catch on to the meter. It's easy if one leg is shorter than the other. ๐ Beautiful lyrics. This would work nicely with a Celtic ensemble. Beautiful start, Mike.
