I like your take on the challenge as well, and the simple chorus adds a lot of implicit story to the song.

In keeping with listing apparent influences, I'd have to add ELO. Great little song; simple but weird--in a good way.

I hear the Bowie too. Also XTC. Crazy arrangement. I love the bouncy piano.
