music-box melancholy

Liner Notes:

A song about a lost explorer saying goodbye to the world

I found this really cool old music box vst a while ago and wanted to do something with it for fawm. Originally wanted to have some kind of glitchy beat for the end section, but couldn't figure out how to do it, so went with big reverby kick drum instead. Not too happy with my vocals on this, but i'm lagging behind a wee bit so they'll do.

Can this be part of the riff-driven challenge? The music box bit is repeated throughout the whole song so that kind of counts, right? Screw you guys, I'm having it anyway

Lyrics:

so i report, the last days into my journal
a last resort, the wool over my eyes pulled
don't leave me now, just wait for the light to burn out
don't desert me now, my faith left no room for my doubt

but we're on our own, and you never say nothing
and we're all alone, tired of this searching
lay back open-eyed and reach out to grasp the sky
silent stars glow bright and the wolves are hanging out tonight

don't drag me down, stuttering breathing
all i have left, are words without feeling

i send a call out to home in sweet desperation
don't worry dear, the cavalry's coming
it's always a little too late

Oh wild, I thought you had a real music box. And then I saw vst, but it's still cool! Have you ever had a music box? My sister had one. It was one of those wind up ones, and it had a ballerina on it.

I always was fascinated by the mechanism of a music box, or anything that involved a cylinder with raised knobs that would 'pluck' some metal forks to produce tunes. I thought they were pretty cool.

I like the sound of the music box, with the dissonant instruments in the backgrounds, reminds me of a horror themed movie or video game. They do that a lot, don't you think? If you want something scary, bring in children's toys... or clowns... or whatever.

Wait, is it supposed to be a scary song? Probably not, but I'm interpreting it as one.

See? "Drag me down" "stuttering breathing"... you're totally being pulled down into a bog by zombie ground dwellers or something...

Based on the last song of yours I heard I agree that maybe it's not your best vocal take, but on the other hand there's a sincere and pleading sound in your breathing that matches well with the point of view, and I wouldn't change that for anything. I think it's cool! I also like the boomy kick taking the song out; makes me think of fireworks in the snow.

Love the music box, reminds me of Eels a little bit. Powerful vocals at the end!

Great use of the stereo field. Hey man anything awesome can be a riff as far as I am concerned. The use of reverb here is really great as well. It really brings out the dynamics, and Sigur Rosiness

Cool beans, love the music box VST, and the weird vox sound on 'don't drag me down...'

I like this a lot. It is melancholy and matches the desperation of the lyrics. Can see the guy sitting in his windblown tent in Antarctica and all he has for company are the music box and the dead bodies of his friends. Very well done sir.
