Liner Notes:

Everybody's probably noticed... when Jessica Fletcher's around, people die. For a couple of hours this morning, I lost my notebook, which had the notes for this song, and many others. It was scarier than living in Cabot Cove. When I found it again, i felt so relieved I finished these lyrics right away.

Lyrics:

Neighbor turns on neighbor
Like jackals in the night
Petty conflicts blow up into
Deadly fire fights

The force of law and order
is weak when times are hard
Seth's locked up in the cupboard
Amos buried in the yard

chorus
The smell of death is hanging
in the foggy, salty air
and the lust for blood is rising
As the beast slinks from his lair,
And across the land he roves
Through the Killing Fields
Of Cabot Cove

No one's safe 'cause every week
The reaper takes a soul
He grabs another victim
and throws him in a hole

And no one wants to live here
They want to leave, some try
But there's no escape from Cabot Cove,
They all come back to die

Chorus

Red tide of blood and mayhem
Sweeps in from the coast
And the poor and huddled masses
Are haunted by the ghosts

Of the many murder victims
That will never rest in peace
Till Jessica finds their killer
and grants them their release

Chorus

Some people say Ms. Fletcher
Is the devil's closest friend
First she does the murder,
then collects the dividend

When she writes up all the stories,
In books that are best sellers
And sometimes I wonder what she's got
Buried in her cellar

Bridge
The power of the grave...
Is strong in coastal Maine
Like a lobster trap,
If you go in, you won't come back again...

Chorus

Outro:
My mama says you'll decompose
If you go to stay at Cabot Cove....

@philmcmill - I came late to "Murder She Wrote" - I hadn't had tv from 1974 - 2010 (which didn't mean I saw no TV - we would watch old shows on DVD from time to time. Which is basically what we did with Murder She Wrote - we went on a binge and watched one after another most nights, until we'd seen all that were available... perhaps 100 episodes. The theme song is light and innoculous and completely forgettable, maybe a bit like "Little House On The Prarie." Since it's obvious that Cabot Cove is the murder capital of the world (at least per capita) and a terrifying place - i saw this song as a corrective, the true theme song of Murder, She Wrote. I am also far from the first person to notice that where ever she goes, murder is never far away from Jessica Fletcher. Surely some townspeople have noticed the murders stop when she's out of town, and start right up again when she comes back home....coincidence? I think not.

Excellent! Its been a while since I've thought about Murder She Wrote. For some reason I don't remember the theme song, but it might be cool to weave a few of its elements into the music.

@stevekey I actually heard it possibly going a couple of different ways... like some shrieking Dio thing, or like Desolation Row! So try it the way you feel comfortable with...

I love this idea. Does it have to be heavy metal? I'm a folkie, and I would sure have fun playing around with this lyric.
