W2: Riff-Driven!

Liner Notes:

Out of the gate with an unhinged rocker. If you think my vocal sounds dangerously unstable, you should have heard some of the first takes. The take on the track is basically what's left after I have exhausted myself screaming the lyrics furiously. I kinda like the mesh of mad fury and tired hoarseness.

The story is (very loosely) inspired by @hoopshank and his recent move to a nicer place. Whereas his home moving story is undividedly positive, this story obviously is seeped through with denied anger at the situation. That's just where the song took me. Yay for FAWM DAY ONE!

Lyrics:

Great, I’m getting out of this place
I’m moving out of this place
Away from the stinking streets
Great, no point in handing ‘round
I’ve been stomping the same ol’ ground
Dancing the same old steps
Got the key, got the house
Away from it all, I’m moving out of Pearl Street
See ya, Pearl Street

Great, the skies are opened up again
There ain’t nothing scraping on them
Nothing but the gentle clouds

Great, I don’t need it anymore
Got my hedge and my hardwood floor
Got my mail-box and oak front door

Pearl Street, I'll see you around

Great, you left your perfume in the air
as if you think that I’d care
I know you leave it everywhere
Got the key, got the house
Forgot about you, honey, I moved on out of Pearl Street
Buh-bye Pearl Street

So what if you came to the housewarming
I get it, it’s just you performing
You never danced well and your perfume is crass
you play like a queen but you’re only a pawn
I moved my dance floor out on the grass
of my new wonderful, safe, right-feeling lawn
When I moved out of Pearl Street

I like how in the verses you sound like you're somehow whispering and screaming at the same time.
  •  sapient 2 months ago
So this is how the AuntieSin chains began. Blimey. They took a bit of turn after this didn't they?

This is wonderfully deranged, telling a pretty clear story as it motors along. You know you should sign like this more often. I rather like dishevilled ranty Tim smile

I used this song on the FAWMCast last night: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/fawm/2012/02/20/19--undecided

Choosing to listen to the whole train before I begin. And yep, I like this too. Choosing the name "Pearl Street" is poetry to me. The lyric got my attention especially when the dance floor moved out onto the grass. And "great, the skies are opened up again" is a beauty of a b*tch to my ear.

Nice frentic twitchy rock star stuff - good vibe
  •  nancyrost 3 months ago
I finally get to listen to this! The mix of triumph and resentment is interesting and believable. The all-screamed-out vocal works terrifically, as do the rocking riff and the "Pearl Street" refrain. Great way to start the chain. Off to listen to the next couple ....

    Wow. Body-bopping music!
  •  devin 3 months ago
Way to really put it all out there on this song...certainly moves well past songwriting to dedicated performing. The energy and vibe is really impressive...congrats, and thanks! D/L

I like this. The out-of-control vocal is great! Nice work with the challenge.
  •  bradbrubaker 3 months ago
Your voice is fascinating. The sounds from the beginning returning at the end had a an nice unsettling effect.
  •  toddnorem 3 months ago
Nice rockin' song with a slightly sinister sounding vocal. I like it.
  •  tcelliott 3 months ago
I had no idea the real details of that Hoops moving. Glad you set us straight.
I like tim songs. This is a tim song. And I'm glad your voice is was so thoroughly exhausted to give you that nice softness under the edge. It sounds good. I like it, too.

Great stuff, works on many levels for me.
  •  francesriley 3 months ago
Wow. I'm chair-dancing my little red swivel seat around the computer room. Fantastic concept for the song, and I especially love the sample at the beginning and end. Your voice sounds thrashed and sweaty. Kick ass rock song, man. I wish I had drums like yours!! Maybe I'd become a rocker too!! smile
  • kessel 3 months ago
    Man, I adore your voice.
  • middlec 3 months ago
Really like the way "great" functions in different ways. Don't know if Pearl Street is a real street or real street name, but it also functions metaphorically, which is, well, great. Some nice things going on here. I like it.
  • izaakalexander 3 months ago
So... after much listening I gotta say this is a real rocker. Those drums are full of energy and the guitar riff is classic. Really reminds me of U2--- arena level rock. I like how the vocal slips and slides and sneaks into that high 'A' with all the effects or whatever it was you did... !? I have no idea how to sing like that, but I like it. Only criticism I have (and this comes after many listens) is that it really could use a change in harmony or tonal center... the "Pearl Street, I'll see you around" bridge could be a break down all the way to drums or a shift to something other than the persistent 'A'... The bookends are really wonderful, and it might be nice to put something like that in the middle. FAWM on!

    Sweet rocker.
I think my fave line is "So what if you came to the housewarming
I get it, it’s just you performing"
    very well done sir.
  • scottlake 3 months ago
Bonus points for starting off with whistling! Agreed to all the points made before.
  •  autoclamp 3 months ago
Damn you damn you damn you damn you....

Hey! You know what will be easy? NOT having to synthesize Wille and Sapient! How hard could it be? Coming up with the opposite of a Wille tune... really, how hard could it be? Grrrrrrr.
  • izaakalexander 3 months ago
Whoop! I'll be listening to this a lot while I try to synthesize it for #auntiesin2 ! I'll comment again when I'm totally saturated!
  •  hoopshank 3 months ago
Fantastic! Huge and wonderful sound and energy and performance and production and everything. Damn who knew all those other chords were unnecessary!? Brilliant lyrics too which I am most honoured to have helped inspire.
  • lightpeak 3 months ago
This is ballistic. Had to laugh at the 'one-chord' tag big_smile
  •  gslade 3 months ago
your liner notes are long..but not like mikeskliar long... lol rockin tune man
  • seantwright 3 months ago
Sonic!!!!! Mental vocals! Love them! Kick ass!
  • nadia 3 months ago
oh my, this song is ridiculously fun. i want to play that rock and rolllllll!!!!!
  •  jinx 3 months ago
This just became my first download of the year... awesome. The only hip club near where I used to live was in Pearl Street, but I always hated the bands that played there, so I especially like this song.

    Greeeeeaaaaaaat

    It really is!
  • angryplant 3 months ago
So surprised that not every comment starts with

    "Greeeeeaaaaaaat"

    but seriously great!
  •  hero 3 months ago
Very sweet rock song. Just solid.
  •  taylortay 3 months ago
Love that you've based the whole song on the one chord and that main riff, yet it doesn't get boring. Also, that is a ripper of a vocal. My Auntie response pales in comparison, but it's here: *22021. Nice one Tim!
  • lvgd09 3 months ago
That's a damn cool groove Tim...
  • steveodell 3 months ago
    a very good rockin song!
  •  autoclamp 3 months ago
Pretty gronking amazing, Tim of the Wille. As the second link in the AuntieSin chain, it's not as intimidating as a Wille-Sapient synthesis... but it's not far off either.

Damn you, Wille, you magnificent bastard.
  • benjaminnolan 3 months ago
    <3 Nuff said. big_smile
  •  subjectzero 3 months ago
Awesome! For some odd reason I'm getting a total The Cure meets Joy Division feeling out of this in the very best way! Cripes I love this!
  • randyxpher 3 months ago
I'm just going to echo a bunch of other people, but the vocal on this is... fab! Actually, everything else is fab too.

    Killer stuff. Masterfully done,
  •  tybarbary 3 months ago
I totally dig the sound of your voice in this song. big_smile
  •  calumcarlyle 3 months ago
pretty good, Tim Wille, you seem to comfortably overachieve while still making it sound like it's all new to you.

This is a great "human" sounding rocker, and a great start, definitely.
  •  natchdan 3 months ago
    You have outrocked me, Wille.

It seems our battle is not yet over.
  •  steffan 3 months ago
    Hell yes, sir. Hell yes.
  •  scottmcb 3 months ago
This is a rocker with attitude. Awesome.
  • pianoman 3 months ago
Unbelievable. If it weren't so bad for your vocal chords, I'd insist you do this on every song. Takes real guts to pull this off.
  •  philnorman 3 months ago
This is why I like you.
  • mikeskliar 3 months ago
great sound, great ideas and great execution-- well done!
    love the feel of it!
  •  stevenwesleyguiles 3 months ago
Your vocals remind me of a early 90s band called The Swoon. Super cool.
  •  stevenwesleyguiles 3 months ago
Thank you, Mr. Willie, for bringing the rock that was needed to be brung.
You done brung it AND got all pretty at the same time. smile
  • arthurrossi 3 months ago
Cool rock track! The verses and the music form a perfect combination!
  •  jonniegrunge 3 months ago
This is a great track. I feel like I'm listening to a live recording of a great band playing in someone's garage. I love the straight out rocker vibe on this. The simple riff guitar part that runs the verses are perfect. Great vocals on this too. Awesome opener!
  •  michaelepic 3 months ago
I just can't express how awesome this is. I love it!! Its messy, its bouncy, its powerful and its like a rollercoaster...exhilarating from start to finish!! GREAT JOB!!
