delicious pastries pop handclaps tweet

Liner Notes:

i co-wrote this last wednesday night with my bandmate jonathan chamberlain. i'm trying to write more pop songs that are just fun without being too analytical (which is my nature). nonce lyrics like "ba ba ba" are helping to pave the way...

inspired the tweet http://twitter.com/fawm/status/8633035252, as the bits of this songs were originally two different partial tunes that we decided to graft into each other.

trying to keep the demos spare this year, but got a little carried away on this one. mostly first takes: acoustic, 2 electrics, 2 vox, handclaps, shaker, tambourine.

UPDATE: jonathan made an even more beatlesy version: http://fawm.org/songs/6055/

Lyrics:

Something Else!
© Burr Settles & Jonathan Chamberlain

you used to be someone
but now you're something else
a carbon copy imitation of yourself

such a newbie
look what you're doing to me
how could you be
someone i showed my home movies?

a prima donna,
you do what you wanna
still i'm gonna
keep on puttin' kisses on ya!

so below me
callin' me a phoney
the ceremony
makes a fine excuse to stone me

how cinematic
just creating static
your emphatic
audience ain't automatic

you used to be someone
but now you're something else

Beautiful track. Doesn't sound like the Beatles at all! Well, I think what people mean is the boldness of the ideas and instrumentation. I'm downloading this for my personal fawmpilation.

Nice work. Love the driving ba-ba-baing then the meaningfully sudden ending !

Great voice, great playing. Very nostalgic sound and feel... like Elliot Smith meets the Beatles meets Weezer. Or something like that!

You have a great gift in penning such consistently good material, and it shows!

This tune will be in my head all day tomorrow. I love the "real" sound of the recording and the abrupt ending. I'm quite keen on the lyrics and find them to flow really well.

Beatles? Never heard of 'em. This song is totally catchy and 60's garage rock pop awesome! Ever heard of Trolley from Milwaukee? Sounds a bit like them. You might like 'em. I'm sure they're somewhere on the internets. Rock on, Burr!

Very fine. Pop-ish without being too bubblegum. And there it stopped!

Very catchy... Great lyrical structure... I like how this is put together. The ba da bas and claps do remind me of the Beatles... but they remind me of a lot of other pop too... but the way this flows and scans is unique.

    Excellent work Burr!

The second electric guitar really makes this song. This is quite a refresher.

This is seriously wonderful! Yes, there's beatles influences here and there (or maybe more properly stated, influences of all those folks who were influenced by the beatles) but lots more,, too.

Love that slightly dissonent guitar that comes in after the first verse and appears here and there.

Even better, maybe is the flow and playful rhyming of the verses, really first rate!

    Fantastic job!

This is so cool! Reminds me of Elliot Smith. The lyrics are in a really interesting meter.

I like the more spare sound. Vocals sound nice. Something Else...I think of The Kinks, which is never a bad thing. Nice song.

Great to hear your work again Burr - I love this! Great energy and production, the hand claps are a nice touch.
  •  Brian Smith 1 month ago
I definitely hear the Beatles at the start, but then perhaps a little Sufjan in the guitar solo later in the song. The ba-ba part is really catchy and the 'hand claps' make really fitting percussion here.
  •  Rob Cooke - Boy@Heart 1 month ago
Yeah really English sounding. Apart from the Beatles references I would also say that it sounds a little Blur too. Burr or Blur? Great song anyways. Love the harmonies.
  •  Phil Norman 1 month ago
Woooo! Burr's back with a "bag" (you siad it on my song, and I like it.). This is a little piece of pop joy. The melody and the lyric are perfectly paired, and the hand claps and ba bas just seal the deal. Great song.

That's pretty great for mostly first takes, and it's just enough polish to give this pop tune some context. Nice.

I definitely see the Beatles in this. That's the first thing that popped into my head after the first five seconds. Haha. Very nice. smile

But ba-ba-ba's are always fun. This has a little Beatles feel to it. I'm diggin' it.
