Zwischen Herz und Verstand

Liner Notes:

I am ever fascinated with liminal spaces and love to explore and expand borders. The border between heart and mind can sometimes be a tough one, though...

This also belongs to the loteria challenge (El Corazon, The Heart, No. 27) - oh well, it went in an unexpected direction indeed... wink

Lyrics:

In der Wand
zwischen Herz und Verstand
ist keine Tür.
Du wohnst dort und ich hier.
Jede Nacht
läufst du unruhig umher,
ich kann dich hören.
Jede Nacht
fängt die Stille dich ein,
ohne sie
kannst du gar nicht mehr sein.
Dein Gefühl
ist erloschen und kühl
und längst begraben
in der Wand
zwischen Herz und Verstand.

Es ist kalt
und der Sommer ist weit,
doch bald kommt
eine wärmere Zeit.
Jeden Tag

Leg dein Ohr
an die Wand und hör hin
wie es pocht
dort, ganz tief mittendrin,
wie es lebt,
wie es kämpft und sich müht
und sich den Weg bahnt
durch die Wand
zwischen Herz und Verstand...

Between Heart and Mind

In the wall
between heart and mind
there is no door.
You live there, I live here.
Every night
you walk around, restless,
I can hear you.
Every night
silence catches you,
you can not be without it
any more.
Your emotion
is extinguished and cold
and long buried
in the wall
between heart and mind.

It is cold
and summer is far away,
but soon there'll come
a warmer time.
Every day
I wakefully look out of my window.
Your door
remains locked to me,
but I know
that you live behind it.
I stand
and lay my hands on the stones
of this wall
between heart and mind.

Only in a dream
the wall has a door
and I walk over to you.
You smile in your sleep, because you feel that you feel.
And I whisper quietly
until you awaken.

Hold your ear
against the wall and listen
how it throbs
deeply in its centre,
how it lives,
how it fights and struggles
and makes its way
through the wall
between heart and mind…

Another great song from you, Karan. I don't even bother to read the translations on these. Not understanding it lets me just absorb the music itself. You can feel more. big_smile

Wow, Karan, this is absolutely magical. I find myself giving it five stars, a rating I've only given to one other song so far this year. I feel like I could listen to this over and over and never grow tired of it. Lines like "Jede Nacht fängt die Stille dich ein, ohne sie kannst du gar nicht mehr sein" and "Du lächelst im Schlaf, denn du fühlst, daß du fühlst" just captivate me.

And the entire last verse is too beautiful for words.

(And I would also like to thank you for writing a song that I could understand without looking at the translation! smile Sometimes simplicity is the most perfect elegance.)

Really beautiful, lyrically and musically. The close is such a descriptive scene, putting one's ear to the wall ... and the idea of a wall between heart and mind alone is a good one. It's both a barrier and something to be overcome or worked through, and it's even a bit of a messenger in how it transmits sounds ...

Thanks for the translation, and for playing the loteria challenge!

You are really creating some beautiful songs this year! This is very nice, I especially love the way you slow the tempo then return before the close of the song.

What I really love about your lyrics is the way that you really create pictures (and they must be great in German, cos I'm only reading the translation and that sounds cool!). I love the image of the rooms and the restless wandering... such a mix of abstract and concrete. smile

This brings up a lot of memories of guitars and campfires. Touching lyrics, too... it's one of my personal missions to help people tear down these kinds of walls.

Sie bilden Deutsche Ton so hübsch! Ich lerne nur ein Semester, aber ich liebe, wie Sie die Sprache glatt bilden.

A fine start, Karan! I love the simplicity and directness of this. The ambience of the space you sang and played this in suits it well, too.

I look forward to hearing lots more from you this year!

    Hi Karan,

schön, wieder was von Dir zu hören. Und wieder ein Song, der zum Nachdenken anregt, mit einer sehr schönen Bridge, die von mir aus ruhig zwei Mal kommen könnte.
