sea-shanty folk pirate

Liner Notes:

In 2008 I wrote a song about Pirates as my warm-up song. This year I decided to try another pirate themed song.

Yeah... not so much. This didn't really translate from the idea I had in my head and I'm not real happy with it overall... but it's FAWM. Post it and move on.

Any ideas for improvement you have are welcome, even if they're "Send it down to Davey Jones Locker". smile

Lyrics:

Look sharp me lads as we come along side
her mast is down, her sails alight
We'll send her down to devils tide
We've got a job to do tonight

One for Mary on the Shore
One for Willy over the sea
One for saving after the war
One for you and one for me

Two for Mary on the Shore
Two for Willy over the sea
Two for drinking after the score
Two for you and Two for me

Three for Mary on the Shore
Three for Willy over the sea
Three for a hat that's ne'er been wore
Three for you and Three for me

Four for Mary on the Shore
Four for Willy over the sea
All for the taxman whose counting the score
Unless we find somewhere else to be

Four for Mary on the Shore
Four for Willy over the sea
We'll find a place to stash the score
that's more for you and the rest for me

Like the key changes! Can see everybody singing this in a pirate's bar.

Nicely done I love the key changes and the tricky time signature. And I'm a captain, so I;m a sucker for a good sea shanty.

Yes, my man.... I have been missing Stan Rogers a lot myself.
    Good work.

Aaaaarrrrrgh! If you ever come to CT, you have to stop at Mystic Seaport, where this song would fit in perfectly with the other shanties. This was fun!

Cool. I took this sea-shanty for a test drive and didn't even get sea sick. I'm lookin' for a bottle of beer on the wall! A home-made Eric beer!

You are from Minnesota?? you had me fooled with the way you played and sang it..sounded totally like an old Irish or Scotish drinking song...nice job.. love the middle playing in the musical bridge...:)~~ Kim
  • Eric The Red - back with more sing-a-longs from the briney deep!

I think the lyrics are awesome and very authentic - not that I have much to compare it to - but if you were to tell me that this was an old pirate song from 1592 I wouldn't question you. The only thing that I would change just for the sake of meter would be in the first line...."Look sharp me lads as we come along side" - I would change "along" to "come up side" or "come 'long side" just to keep that jaunty meter. same for "All for the taxman whose counting the score" - I would lose the word "whose" just to tighten it up.

I don't think that you hit it perfectly with the music - but you are close. I would come back to this one for sure if I were you. it has potential

Other than the blantant sexual overtones, I think this could be a good counting song for kids. I have to say this is one of my favorite songs in the "pirate folk rock" genre. Five for Mary!
