Shaking Hands with Death

Tom Slatter

Liner Notes:

I had two unrelated song ideas, which I combined. This is all one take improvs recorded late at night after watching Terry Pratchett's Dimblebey lecture:

Lyrics:

Maybe got away with our secrets
Maybe got away with it all
Stumbling on our final breath
Shaking hands with death

Never been too fond of suffering
Never been too fond of pain
Glass of whiskey in the garden
Shaking hands with death

Release Me
Release me when I saw
On the stroke midnight I swear I'll jump

Maybe got away with our secrets
Maybe got away with it all
Stumbling on our final breath
Shaking hands with death

Never been too fond of suffering
Never been too fond of pain
Glass of whiskey in the garden
Shaking hands with death

The unrelated ideas contrast with each other nicely. A lot of times we throw out little interesting bits because we can't fit them into a song we really love.

    I too dig the orchestration.
I like the shaking hands with death line,

I would never had known this was stitched out of several songs.

Very interesting song - I like the guitars - some kind of octaver plugin used?...
Good singing...Nice use of delays. smile

Lovely song. Great atmosphere and I really enjoyed the dirty guitar sound. IMO you're overdoing the harmonics, they start losing their power.

Tom, this is one of the tunes that leaps out of the jukebox and says "Comment me now!" As already stated, the guitar sounds are captivating. Beautifully conceived and executed.

Great sounds, the whole song is captivating

Great tone on that first guitar. The layers blend really well. I like this song a lot. Haunting.

Fantastic. I love that sound you got in the opening.

Terry Pratchett! Have you read any of the Discworld books?

    A pretty deep song.

At the beginning and ending, are those harmonics I'm hearing? How did you get that sound?

That's a very seductive/threatening intro, the backing to the vocals is quite heavy, well done! I don't see that the transitions are strange: I would've been congratulating you on the structure if you hadn't let the cat out of the bag.

(Note to all readers--do NOT talk yourself down in the liner notes!!!)
