Space X just launched a car into space, along with a dummy in an astronaut suit called Starman

Challenge to write a song about Starman!
To help, here is a live feed of him orbiting earth.

You read my mind, been working on it since I watched the launch... wasn't that amazing.....

  • @tuneslayer2018  1 week

I anticipated your challenge and wrote a song to which I will add the #starman tag.

@brrrse -- I was hollerin' and cussin' with excitement for the entire launch and then for the paired landing of the boosters back at the Cape. Holy cow, what a sight!

  • @brrrse  1 week

@postcardhelicopters right? OMG I was screaming and crying OMG..

  • @postcardhelicopters  1 week

@brrrse - oh, thank god... I thought I was the only one. 😀 What an amazing sight. Took me right back to the days of Apollo.

  • @defaultdave  1 week

My entire office erupted with awwed cheer at the dual landing.

  • @defaultdave  1 week

@tuneslayer2018 good going! Can’t wait to hear the demo.

  • @ericdistad  1 week

    Tangentially related: http://fawm.org/songs/79120/

That said, the picture of Starman in the Roadster with the Earth in the background has got to be worth a song at least! I'm going to add it to my list. 😀

    Thanks for posting this challenge!

  • @fuzzy  1 week

Does Starman in the sportscar remind anyone of the first scene in the film Heavy Metal? I wonder if Musk's entire game plan is to get hold of the Loc-Nar....

  • @defaultdave  1 week

@ericdistad Totally related! Pre-starman, Elon heard your song and sent him to save you 😁

  • @krayzie003  1 week

I saw this earlier and said lets do it. This is my ode to Starman.

Yeah the double landing of the boosters was euphoric, we where all yelling and cursing and applauding like crazy here.
And for me there was also another highlight, the fact that the words " DON'T PANIC" got sent into space.

  • @defaultdave  1 week

@alboe That double landing happened so quickly. Was frigin space ballet.

  • @krayzie003  1 week

Im with @alboe on the double landing. That was crazy. When I saw that I was thinking wow, we are on the verge of a world like has only been dreamed of in science fiction movies.

Thank for listening and your comments @defaultdave

  • @scottlake 1 week

The double landing was technologically amazing. Seriously inspiring for all the reasons stated above. But I wonder how does one company get such exclusive use of property paid for with tax dollars from my grandparents? Musk creeps me out and I can’t put my finger on it exactly as to the reason why. There’s just something weird going on there. Maybe because to my eye he looks kind of like Christopher Walken as The Continental?

  • @ericdistad  1 week

@scottlake - As I understand it, the Falcon Heavy was built with all private dollars. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falcon_...

As far as Musk creeping out... well, from all reports the guy is very intense, so... yeah, that could be a thing. 😀

  • @scottlake 1 week

@ericdistad I’m talking about the facility; Cape Canaveral.

  • @cynthiawolff  1 week

Just a mind blowing amazing thing...thanks for bringing it to my attention as I knew nothing about it!!

  • @tuneslayer2018  1 week

@scottlake it appears that SpaceX leases the facilities they use.

  • @brrrse  1 week

So as I watched Starman cruising the Van Allen belts, my writer demon in my brain said "What a great place to hide a body!" - Also inspired by all the sci-fi stories about people with terminal illnesses sending their bodies to space. It's lyrics only right now. http://fawm.org/songs/80242/

  • @brrrse  1 week

Kennedy Space Center has billed itself as "Spaceport USA" for as long as I can remember (back to the 80's). They lease the property out to other companies for launches of private payload all the time. In their exhibits talking about "Spaceport" there are projections of it being like an airport. They even have a few IMAX movies about it. 😀

  • @postcardhelicopters  1 week

    @scottlake -- in 2014, SpaceX signed a 20-year lease on 39A. Here's the official NASA press release:

    https://www.nasa.gov/content/nasa-spa...

  • @scottlake 1 week

I figured they weren’t using it for free. Let’s scale the idea down to see if you still agree with the idea. Local community pays taxes to build a community swimming pool complex. Speedo bathing suit company decides they really like the community pool for doing swimsuit development and they sign a 20 year lease to have exclusive access to the big pool, that was built with the community’s tax dollars. The taxpayers get no choice in the matter of the fact that their pool is now under private company exclusive use. Whether or not Speedo is paying the city for the pool doesn’t change that fact. The people who gave up their personal income to taxes which funded NASA all those years aren’t seeing one red cent of Elon Musk’s lease payments. Part of why he can do this so cheap is he didn’t have to build Cape Canaveral. My grandparents and yours and millions of other people had to pay for it.

  • @scottlake 1 week

Regardless of that the dual landing of the rockets was way cool.

  • @brrrse  1 week

And his leasing of the spot that you and I and the rest of the country isn't using anyway will result in technology that will directly benefit all of us - I guess it depends what you want to be outraged about. There are so many bigger, worse misuses and injustices going on in the world I'd rather be upset about. Space exploration isn't causing the economic issues in the world, or in the country.

  • @scottlake 1 week

I’m not outraged. Take a look at the NASA budget as part of the GDP back in the day. How ‘all of us will benefit’ from Musk is of questionable value

  • @scottlake 1 week

Something just doesn’t sit right with me, but that doesn’t mean I’m outraged

  • @brrrse  1 week

@scottlake I do understand where you're coming from. My perspective seems to be 180 degrees from yours, so I don't think I'll ever agree with you on this - but I'm okay with that. My concerns are much more basic and immediate - once I'm not in danger of homelessness and hunger, I"ll have more time to worry with budgets and debates 😀

  • @postcardhelicopters  1 week

@scottlake -- If I may take your example, and alter it to reflect how I see the situation? Maybe it will help you see my point of view about it.

Local community pays taxes to build a community swimming pool complex for Olympics. Flagship diving pool of complex provides scene for huge worldwide upset with U.S. winning several gold medals. Local community taxes later cut, and while some parts of pool complex remain open, the flagship diving pool cannot be properly maintained and begins to slide into disrepair. Speedo bathing suit company decides they really like the flagship diving pool for doing swimsuit development and they sign a 20 year lease to have exclusive access to the flagship diving pool, while the rest of the community pool that was built with the community’s tax dollars remains accessable to the public. The taxpayers get no choice in the matter of the fact that their flagship diving pool is now under private company exclusive use for twenty years. However, at the end of that lease period all improvements and upkeep by Speedo bathing suit company now revert back to public use, unless a new exclusive contract is written and agreed to.

    (CONT'D:)

  • @postcardhelicopters  1 week

    (CONT'D:)

The Cold War drove the space race, and once we reached the moon there was a big push to just shut the whole thing down since "we beat the Russians to the moon."

As I see it, the biggest reasons he can do this so cheaply is by consolodating manufacturing to one company and developing reusable rockets. The launch facility is a much smaller proportion of that calculus. His use of Complex 39A doesn't prevent the public or other businesses from using the rest of the Cape facilities. And it's unfair to bristle about SpaceX not returning a red cent to the people who paid taxes to build the entire complex, and not mention the other site leasees. The entire site would've gone to mothballs and flushed those tax investments down the drain without commercial launch operations stepping in.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but just trying to highlight a differing viewpoint.

  • @postcardhelicopters  1 week

P.S. perhaps I should say that I don't really object to you main point in principle - regarding the conversion of public assets to private property - but I just don't think it applies in this case.

  • @scottlake 1 week

Peeling the onion back more....the facility and NASA for that matter lost funding also because of shuttle disasters not because we beat USSR to the moon. Everyone is all excited because WE are back in space. No, WE are not. HE is. But I just saw more shots of the car with the big blue marble in the background. Very cool. But I wish we had maintained funding to NASA so this ‘going to waste’ reality of the facility wasn’t true.

  • @postcardhelicopters  1 week

Yes. I also wish NASA funding had not been cut. It was a short-sighted shame.

  • @defaultdave  1 week

I imagine someone would need to be intense to create a private space agency.
