The One Take Challenge

  • @tcelliott  Feb 4

Wire and record a song in which the recording is in one take. That could be an iphone recording or a multi-track mix with each track being the first (and only) take.

Edited to add: If you often do a one take recording (there are years that I'm almost exclusively one take, hand held recordings) then try improvising a song in one take. Yeah, it's harder than it sounds.

    tag it: one-take

  • @tcelliott  Feb 4

The idea is that we need to get songs out, let's not focus on the production (for at least one song.)

  • @metalfoot  Feb 4

Oh goodness, that's like 90% of my stuff! 😉

  • @petemurphy  Feb 4

This has been all of my demos so far this year.

As far as improvising, I don't think I'd be able to do it with lyrics, but I might be able to blag my way through something musically (some of the musical sections in my songs this year have been made up on the spot).

  • @timfatchen  Feb 4

Mine have all been one take straight, or consecutive one-takes where I'm layering. So that's 4 so far! Improvising a song? THe music's fine, but I've never been good at stream-of-consciousness words. Though I can improvise a song with words in front of me. Hmmm. Perhaps I should...

  • @dasbinky  Feb 5

How about if each of the 23 tracks on my tune is recorded on a single take per track? Does that count?

  • @spunky4455 Feb 5

    one chord one take

  • @onewholovesrock Feb 5

Every song I've written the past 2+ years has been recorded as a live one take performance with my phone. I've always enjoyed the writing part of songs. But not so much the recording/production side of things. So, unfortunately I'm losing all my recording/studio skills I've learned over the years. But hey, my live performance skills have greatly improved.

  • @candle Feb 5

I used to do only one-take improvisations. I've moved away from that with my use of more instrumentation. But I think returning to my "old way" of recording/writing is something do-able this FAWM. I accept thy challenge sir!

  • @cblack  Feb 6

Threw together a rough, one-take parody song:

Not entirely happy with it, but eh... It was just meant to be for fun, anyway.

  • @darkmantle  Feb 6

I haven't done a one take yet, but I don't worry about final production quality. It's usually things like "Shit I missed the bridge" or a pretty bad timing mix up.

I did plan on doing a one take with my 12 string since it has to be mic'd and do the vocals at the same time.

  • @cblack  Feb 6

I'm actually contemplating trying a one-take of my keyboard, and going the other direction with it - keys, then add vocals, rather than vocals-then-keys. Might be a bit easier, maybe.

  • @karlsburg25  Feb 6

This was my intention this year as am travelling around but so far my production instincts have drawn me to create guitar track first then sing separate. I SHALL do at least one, one take this fawm though

  • @sw1n3flu  Feb 6

Many of my FAWM songs fall under this category.... grab guitar, hit record, let it flow....!

  • @antlion Feb 7

    here's a one-taker; no effects either (unfortunately?)

  • @alboe Feb 7

    Here's mine
Every now and then I do a live take and this was one.
Usually on my more "produced" songs only the bass is in one take.

  • @alboe Feb 7

    Sorry double post

  • @sw1n3flu  Feb 7

    Last night's one take:

  • @gordon Feb 7

    Here's my effort

  • @mikhail Feb 11

    my one-toke... errr, i mean, one-take:

  • @yam655  Feb 11

Most of my songs are one-take improvisations. This hear I've been doing a lot of post-processing, (particularly of the intermediary MIDI), so I went ahead and tagged a song that had none of that.

  • @marvsmooth  Feb 12

I've done this a lot in the past!

This was on the first take -

I'm taking part in the "3 in 10" challenge too, which sort of goes in line with this. Link -

Basically for that I am going to look at a clock, press record, and somehow blag three new songs in that ten minutes completely improvised!

  • @radicalmguy  Feb 12

    Three mics, one take

  • @aprilm Feb 12

    One take tonight

  • @aprilm Feb 12

    lol @mikhail

  • @paulhenry  Feb 27

    They're all one-mic, one-take. You can tell, but oh well. . . .

  • @zecoop  Feb 27

First time doing one-takes! Each instrument was recorded once. I very quickly figured out the basics of each part before, very generally what kind of thing they were going to be doing (since I had played the banjo once before, last year, and never had played the mandolin ever), but only recorded one take each. That was kind of huge for me. Normally it's like 25 take, lol. So there's lots of mistakes in this one. 😀

  • @hazeyjohnii  Mar 3

Just realised I never posted this here:

  • @ustaknow Mar 4

All of mine this year, done this way. Love it!

  • @beautyspot  Mar 8

I started off with intentions to write songs from pieces and bits created this winter, but just didn't feel it when I started. So most of this years tracks were just made up on the spot.

  • @tcelliott  Mar 8

Many of mine were, most of the skirmishes were comprised of mostly one takes, but many of them had a second take of vocal or whatnot.

  • @metalfoot  Mar 8

Probably about 90% of mine were one-takes.

  • @chrishope  Mar 9

this year many but this one is a pure made up as recorded apart from having the title..its a bit rambly in places

  • @steviez  Mar 16

I ended up with 4 or 5 one-take songs, since they're basically demos anyway, and with some of the pauses I use it gets tricky multi-tracking them (I have a process where I put markers on the DAW and have a separate computer monitor set up in my tracking room, but that was a lot of effort for demos 😀 My favourite song I did this year was a one-take - as was my other favourite -

One of them was recorded on an iPad....I just can't remember which one.....or maybe both of them were.....

  • @leepat  Mar 20

does it count if it was the 10th take?
    iphone too!
