I recently picked up a loteria deck (think: Mexican bingo, Google it if you're unfamiliar) to use as a writing project. Each of the 54 cards has a pic on it of something (a tree, a hand, a skull, a watermelon, a spider, a canoe, etc.). I've been dealing out the cards to friends so they can write short stories based on the image they get at random. How about songs? My challenge is to draw a random card for any FAWMer who wants one to maybe see if we can get a full 54 songs, one for each card in the deck? (Ryan)

Again, sounds like a fun idea. I'm looking to do some 'story songs' this year anyhow.

    Put me in!
  •  Dan Wallbank 1 month ago
    Sure, put me down.
  •  Robyn Mackenzie 1 month ago
    Awesome, count me in.

    I'm in. Oh yes please.
  •  Donna 1 month ago
You bet! Pick one for me as well. wink (Though I only do lyrics.)
  • Embers of Autumn 1 month ago
@Donna. Then you should write up some lyrics or write it like a poem, then somebody can just do some intrumental or background music (an underscore if you will) and you can read it over it. Just an idea.
  •  isaac quatorze 1 month ago
excelent Ha'Orch! please deal me a card when the time comes... smile
  • Will Meinberg 1 month ago
    deal me in!
  •  Halfpenny Orchestra 1 month ago
Ha'Orch sounds like the sound you make after you've eaten some bad potato salad.
  •  Donna 1 month ago
@Embers. Well, I'll write it as a lyric and hope someone jumps in to musicify and sing it. wink
Unless of course in a moment of extra madness I sing it A Cappella or with a music track generated by Songsmith. lol (I indulged in BIAB a couple of months ago, but am nowhere near beating it into submission.)
  •  isaac quatorze 1 month ago

  • siren 1 month ago
If you've got enough cards I'd love to have a go at this!
  •  Scott Lake 1 month ago
Similar thought: Pick up a copy of the Harris Burdick Mysteries. Or look here http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/davidc/6c_files/documents/mysteries/divmysteries.htm

My brother in law used to run a writing club that I joined. This was one of the assignments - write a story related to any one of the illustrations in the book.
  •  Halfpenny Orchestra 1 month ago
    @Scott Lake,
Chris Van Allsburg is great, and I particularly love that set of illustrations. My wife and I have a small poster of this one in our office/craft/library/music/junk room:
    http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/davidc/6c_files/documents/mysteries/library.htm

And to clarify...does that mean you'd like a card?

    --Bret
  •  Jharms 1 month ago
Haha, Scott, this is awesome! I remember doing creative writing projects based on these illustrations when I was in elementary school! I wrote drafts for the pictures labeled "Archie Smith, Boy Wonder," "The 3rd Floor Bedroom," and "The House on Maple Street." I remember the last one started with a kid being dared to stay in a spooky house, and ended with something like interdimensional wormholes...

I'll give it a try, if you'd be so kind.
  •  Halfpenny Orchestra 1 month ago
We'll be shuffling and dealing out cards now that February is here. But just because we've started doesn't mean we can't still have takers. There are a lot of cards in a 54-card deck. Well, 54, I guess ...

    -RYAN
  •  Donna 1 month ago
Can't wait to get mine! wink
  •  Halfpenny Orchestra 1 month ago
Everyone who signed up for a card before this posting should have been assigned one by now. Please contact us with any questions. We're looking forward to hearing the results! (And looking forward to getting more sign-ups to fill out the deck. Minus the 14 we took for ourselves, we have 10 left (9 if Scott Lake was actually signing up for one and not just making conversation).
  •  Donna 1 month ago
You're right! Mine (# 19) looks more like a flamingo than a heron. wink Oh well, it gives me a choice of which one to write about! Intriguing is that just at the moment your message arrived, I was writing a lyric in which an ibis is mentioned. wink
  •  orinoco 1 month ago
I can't count to 54 to see if there are still some left, but could I join in please? smile
  •  Halfpenny Orchestra 1 month ago
@orinoco: Sure...I just left you a message telling you what card you drew.

If we have more than enough people sign up, we'll probably just at the top with new random assignments.

And if anyone missed the link above to the site with pictures of all of them, here it is again:

UPDATE: Counting the 14 cards that we (randomly) assigned to ourselves, every card in the deck as finally been assigned to someone at least once. Awesome!

That's no reason to stop the sign-ups, though - we'll continue on by doubling up on the ones we assigned ourselves which we haven't started yet (since we've never gotten close to 14 songs in a single FAWM), and then we'll just start a new random assignment cycle for all the other cards. Keep 'em coming!

    --Bret

@Scott - Glad to do it...it's all powered by the magic of spreadsheets. (I love them so...) We've both got fairly busy work/family/etc. schedules, so I'm not sure how many songs we'll get out, but at least we can be enablers smile

Drew La Bota (The Boot, No. 22). I decided to combine it with the "Seventh Sanctum Challenge" since one of the topics the site generated for me was "fetishes." I mean, what cooler song can you do about boots than "boot worship" huh? wink Here it is:

(Sorry we haven't been commenting on anything yet...it's been an unusually full week here, workwise and otherwise. You might notice that we haven't posted anything ourselves, although we have some proto-lyrics sketched out. We'll catch up, we promise!)

    UPDATE:
If you are reading this and haven't jumped in yet, don't worry about us running out of cards. We've already started over at the top of the deck with a new random distribution, and we'll keep doing so as long as people are interested. Counting ourselves, there are 62 FAWMers working on this challenge...fantastic!

And if you missed the previous links to scans of the cards, you can find them here: http://gallery.elsewhere.org/v/loteria/clemente1/

  •  Halfpenny Orchestra 1 week ago
Thanks, everyone who finished a song! We'll be listening to all of them, eventually...hopefully soon. If you update your song for some reason, let us know.

    Final statistics:
    - 89 cards dealt (includes one which someone self-chose)
    - 59 songs written (includes one I know of which is not tagged...*cough*negasi*cough*)

If you haven't checked out some of the other Loteria songs, go do it...there's some great stuff out there.

Nice one Halfpenny - I didn't get going on it until really late into FAWM, but I had a lot of fun when I did. Same time next year?
  •  sapient network 1 week ago
This was a grand idea - and has given me the perfect reason to listen to another 58 tunes big_smile
  •  Halfpenny Orchestra 1 week ago
It was a lot of fun putting this together and seeing how many people jumped in.

We've tried to give ourselves a different concept/challenge to start writing from in every FAWM we've participated in, and this has been the best one, I think. Next year, it will probably be something different again, but we'll try to come up with another good challenge, and one that can be shared.
  •  Julie 5 days ago
Thanks so much for putting this challenge together big_smile
