I recently picked up a loteria deck (think: Mexican bingo, Google it if you're unfamiliar) to use as a writing project. Each of the 54 cards has a pic on it of something (a tree, a hand, a skull, a watermelon, a spider, a canoe, etc.). I've been dealing out the cards to friends so they can write short stories based on the image they get at random. How about songs? My challenge is to draw a random card for any FAWMer who wants one to maybe see if we can get a full 54 songs, one for each card in the deck? (Ryan)
@Donna. Then you should write up some lyrics or write it like a poem, then somebody can just do some intrumental or background music (an underscore if you will) and you can read it over it. Just an idea.
@Embers. Well, I'll write it as a lyric and hope someone jumps in to musicify and sing it.
Unless of course in a moment of extra madness I sing it A Cappella or with a music track generated by Songsmith. (I indulged in BIAB a couple of months ago, but am nowhere near beating it into submission.)
i'm in too. how will we actually see the cards? you just tell us what it is maybe and we imagine the image? or will you actually scan the cards in some way?
For the visually curious, here's a link to images of all 54 loteria cards: http://tinyurl.com/yadjoe5 I'll start shuffling and dealing. I'll let you know which card you receive on your FAWM page shortly before Feb. 1 ...
My brother in law used to run a writing club that I joined. This was one of the assignments - write a story related to any one of the illustrations in the book.
Haha, Scott, this is awesome! I remember doing creative writing projects based on these illustrations when I was in elementary school! I wrote drafts for the pictures labeled "Archie Smith, Boy Wonder," "The 3rd Floor Bedroom," and "The House on Maple Street." I remember the last one started with a kid being dared to stay in a spooky house, and ended with something like interdimensional wormholes...
We'll be shuffling and dealing out cards now that February is here. But just because we've started doesn't mean we can't still have takers. There are a lot of cards in a 54-card deck. Well, 54, I guess ...
Everyone who signed up for a card before this posting should have been assigned one by now. Please contact us with any questions. We're looking forward to hearing the results! (And looking forward to getting more sign-ups to fill out the deck. Minus the 14 we took for ourselves, we have 10 left (9 if Scott Lake was actually signing up for one and not just making conversation).
You're right! Mine (# 19) looks more like a flamingo than a heron. Oh well, it gives me a choice of which one to write about! Intriguing is that just at the moment your message arrived, I was writing a lyric in which an ibis is mentioned.
UPDATE: Counting the 14 cards that we (randomly) assigned to ourselves, every card in the deck as finally been assigned to someone at least once. Awesome!
That's no reason to stop the sign-ups, though - we'll continue on by doubling up on the ones we assigned ourselves which we haven't started yet (since we've never gotten close to 14 songs in a single FAWM), and then we'll just start a new random assignment cycle for all the other cards. Keep 'em coming!
@Scott - Glad to do it...it's all powered by the magic of spreadsheets. (I love them so...) We've both got fairly busy work/family/etc. schedules, so I'm not sure how many songs we'll get out, but at least we can be enablers

Drew La Bota (The Boot, No. 22). I decided to combine it with the "Seventh Sanctum Challenge" since one of the topics the site generated for me was "fetishes." I mean, what cooler song can you do about boots than "boot worship" huh? Here it is:
Remember, everyone, to add "loteria" as a tag! Ingrid, Nancy, and Mae, I'll get you card assignments later on today, possibly this evening.
(Sorry we haven't been commenting on anything yet...it's been an unusually full week here, workwise and otherwise. You might notice that we haven't posted anything ourselves, although we have some proto-lyrics sketched out. We'll catch up, we promise!)
UPDATE:
If you are reading this and haven't jumped in yet, don't worry about us running out of cards. We've already started over at the top of the deck with a new random distribution, and we'll keep doing so as long as people are interested. Counting ourselves, there are 62 FAWMers working on this challenge...fantastic!
Should I change my song lyrics around a bit, (I should have looked at the cards before hand) El Pescado appears in the cards to be a Trout or a Cat Fish or Something, I envisioned a gold fish that acted as though he were Don Juan...
Hmm... mine's up. La Escalera - The Ladder. It's possibly my weakest song so far, but I really wanted to make sure I'd hit 7 songs by the 14th so I had to get it up
We're still dealing out cards, and will be until up the end (depending on when we're online and not madly writing songs ourselves). 71 FAWMers have been given cards at this point...

I am so happy with Corinne's setting of my stubborn and difficult El Catrin (The Gentleman/The Dandy) lyrics, which we both tweaked a bit
[accidentally locked version removed... new working link is below a few posts]
FEBRUARY 25 UPDATE:
By my count, we have 31 FAWMers who have written at least one Loteria song, but 41 more who haven't yet finished a song for their cards... There are four days left - you can do it!
--Bret
Thanks, everyone who finished a song! We'll be listening to all of them, eventually...hopefully soon. If you update your song for some reason, let us know.
Final statistics:
- 89 cards dealt (includes one which someone self-chose)
- 59 songs written (includes one I know of which is not tagged...*cough*negasi*cough*)
If you haven't checked out some of the other Loteria songs, go do it...there's some great stuff out there.
It was a lot of fun putting this together and seeing how many people jumped in.
We've tried to give ourselves a different concept/challenge to start writing from in every FAWM we've participated in, and this has been the best one, I think. Next year, it will probably be something different again, but we'll try to come up with another good challenge, and one that can be shared.
Thanks so much for putting this challenge together
It's still kinda rolling along.
I finally put my lyrics to Sniffer's music demo (Dharma), so here is a collab version of El Soldado: http://fawm.org/songs/8434/
Here's mine, I finally remembered to post it, not entirely happy with it but I just wanted to get it done for FAWM
