10 Tips On How To Boost Your Creative Side When Writing Songs

larsonsrobert said:
It can be challenging to think of creative lyrics when writing a song. While many musicians find inspiration from a variety of sources, it can be difficult to find entrancing lyrics that can help a musician sell music. The following guide provides simple tips and tricks on how to boost one's creative side when writing songs.

1.What Are Your Passions?

Many musicians in the past have found inspiration through passion about an issue that is dear to them. This can include a love interest, the environment, wealth and more. Many modern rap artists and digital music artists have themes that revolve around sex, money and drug use. Western or country songs often have a plaintive theme that revolves around the loss of youth, love, money and family.

2.Tune In To Your Emotions

When writing songs, it's important to make sure that the lyrics have a powerful emotional impact. One of the best ways to make sure a song has an emotional impact is by writing lyrics with passion. It's essential to be passionate about something in life. Without passion, everyday life can become dull and uninteresting. This insipid and bland lifestyle can seep into one's lyrics. When you sell music online, don't send people to sleep

3.Do Crazy Stuff

Few people ever hear a truly great song that was written by an accountant or a dentist. While these are good career choices, many musicians lead colorful lives that serve as an inspiration for their lyrics.

4.Writing Whilst High?

While illegal drug use and philandering may not be everyone's cup of tea, they have been a source of inspiration for thousands of musicians and artists. However, these sources of inspiration can have a variety of negative results if practiced excessively. And that 14 minute bass solo may not sound as good when you wake up in the morning.

5.Leave The House

There are many activities that can help one find inspiration for song lyrics. Instead of thinking up new lyrics in one's home, try going for a hike outdoors. Many people can find inspiration when close to nature.

For people who enjoy traveling, a vacation to a remote part of the world can be an incredible source of inspiration. Being exposed to new cultures, languages and foods can be a great way to whet one's creative appetite.

6.Use Bad Experiences To Your Advantage

Lyrics sometimes come from a darker place inside one's body. Many people write songs about the death of a loved one or family member. Mortality can be a sobering subject but can help a lyric writer find a potential subject for his or her song.

7.Collaborate

In some cases, one of the best ways to find inspiration for a song is through collaboration with a friend or band member. Many people can write a song in collaboration with another person. A great way to do this by having each person in a band write a different line in a song. Since everyone can add his or her viewpoint to a song, this can be a good way to create a unique song. While it will probably need heavy editing to become cohesive, this can be an effective starting point when writing song lyrics.

8.Use A Hat

Some people also like to choose song lyrics by pulling them out of a hat. With some friends, try to write down a series of words that would sound good in a song. Try pulling out two to three at a time. If they work well together, try to incorporate them into one line in a song.

9.Cheat

There are also some websites that can generate unique lyrics when writing a song. While these will require heavy editing, they can be a good starting point for many musicians.

10.Be Prepared

Ever tried to remember that funny thing your friend said in the the bar last night? There are lots of potentially great lyrics being thrown into the universe each day. Make sure you are prepared by taking a pad with you, or writing them down on a phone or other device. Good lyric writers are always looking for that classic line, and often its closer than you think.

Writing a song can be challenging for many people. While inspiration can be elusive, there are many ways to boost one's creative side.

How should one deal with the death of a loved one, no matter how many years distant they may be?

anonymouse said:
I would recommend reserving a period for mourning, where you make sure to keep them in mind from time to time to be grateful for their existence, and grateful that you still exist. I mean -- to make this a conscious rite, a focus for your feelings, rather than a wilderness of tendrils.
But I don't know. This is for you.

If you want to vent but can't write a song, I would suggest "expressionism" - not words, but vocalising the feelings improv. That way you won't irritate yourself by sullying the depth of feeling with awkward/cheesy lyrics or trying to crush the sum of your relationship into a pop song.

And some of them with surgery turn out reasonable. The surgery appears to be cruel and callous, but it's been professional amputation, cut and tuck, no malice. And...the library's been accepting them. Hmmm. After six years of languishing in a dark and dusty corner.. Seven years in one case. Hmm.

The improvement on my original demo is fantastic. The final product sounds much more like a commercially produced track, somehow the different instruments all sound clearer and blend together in a better way. Also the overall track is louder so you don't have to crank up the volume to play it. Well worth the money and vert easy to do I sent a file and received the mastered version in a couple of days. Would recommend this to all Fawmers.

Basically, I'm writing my own hard science fiction story in segments - each associated with a new piece of music. During FAWM, I used an Arthur C. Clarke book, so the material was solid at the start, so I need some picky folks, if you're up for it.

If you have a background in engineering and/or physics then that's just absolutely Jim Dandy!

Whether it would suit you, depends on your budget - the going price in the US is about $99 (about £80 in the UK, so we get ripped off as per usual...), but if you're serious about iPad guitar recording, the Jam apparently wees from low orbit over its analogue competition (e.g. the IK iRig, Peavey AmpKit LINK, etc.).

On the other hand, if you want an "all-in-one" audio/MIDI I/O box for iPad, the iU2 looks very tempting, as it appears to "do the lot" for less outlay than individual MIDI/audio/instrument interfaces would.

Buying Your First Mic(s) -- Advice From a Pro

scottlake said:
In case I didn't say it enough times earlier in the thread: If you are about to spend lots of money for a microphone, consider spending it on the pre-amp instead.

This is a rule of thumb that has worked for me in the past. I learned it somewhere and it's played out to be true:

You can take a cheap mic and usually it will sound great through a nice preamp.
You can take an expensive mic, and usually it will sound crappy with a crappy preamp.

Noisefloor is usually what will raise it's ugly head in the pre-amp portion of the signal chain.

Way too much wringing of the hands for mic purchase/use - where the time and money should be spent on getting as much gain as you can in the pre-amp with as little noise in the pre-amp as possible.

What you DON'T want is hiss in the recorded signal. The hiss doesn't usually originate with the mic'ed signal, it's with the gain staging in the whole signal chain.

Guys like Ronan almost forget this because they always have a clean preamp in the rack

About half that book is criticising all religions, saying no God exists, and so forth... which you wouldn't think a 'spiritual' book would talk about.

Plus, it's an easy read. It's not too intrincate.

On the other hand, I bought Kant's 'Critique of pure reason', which is totally on the other hand. It's almost impossible to read a page without falling asleep. Intrincate and boring

Quality of co-writes versus self-written?

devin said:
I'm totally hooked hooked on co-writing...my muse just seems to freak out (in a good way) when presented with ideas that are already taking shape. Some days my skills aren't enough to take a project all the way from "spark" thru "recording".

I think having a cowriter help sift through the possible ideas helps channel the good stuff at every stage. The process may seem to take longer some days, but the end result is usually reached quicker.

I only managed 4 solo songs this year, while 21 came through co-writing.

orbh said:
Hello all!
Last year I recorded a thrash metal EP and it's finally in Spotify and many other places. If you like Megadeth, Testament, Annihilator and bands like that you might like this. The band is called 'Thrashapult' and the EP is 'Fist Over Wall'. It's four songs of old school thrash metal. I wrote, performed and produced everything by myself. I also designed the logo and draw the art.

You can listen to it in Spotify: http://open.spotify.com/artist/1VlFZVvFDErNubirrDkQKp
You can buy it for example in iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/fi/artist/thrashapult/id499381691
It can also be found in Amazon, Deezer, Rhapsody and who knows where.

I hope that you enjoy. Thank you!

I agree with much of what has been said: you basically 'need a good reason or a feeling' to make a song short, long, whatever.
If pop music is not your thing then disregard its limitations.

The idea is to have a laptop running Live with an
Akai MPD32 and KP3. I guess I'd be running
audio samples and triggering them with the
MPD, and using effects on the beats etc.. then
the KP3 to effect the full track.
So what kind of spec would I need to run that
smoothly? Is £400 a realistic figure to run that
comfortably?

NaSoAlMo - looking for a new site administrator

tcelliott said:
I've done it a few years and skipped a few years so... well I think i did it 2008 and then... maybe 2009? and then tried 2011 but didn't complete it that year.

Believe it or not the new site is much better than the old except... there were some malware hacked onto the site this past fall which was not amusing at all.

I don't know crap about running sites and building things so don't even think it.
