Influences: Musical tastes all over the map - old REM, Beatles, Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, Frente, Throwing Muses, My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Cocteau Twins, The Sundays, Echo and the Bunnymen, Regina Spektor, Velvet Underground, The Cure, Devo, Bob Mould, Indigo Girls, Laurie Anderson, King Crimson, Rush, Yes, Chicago, Kate Bush, Joy Division, Led Zep, The Jam, John Wesley Harding, Peter Mulvey, Martin Sexton, Suzanne Vega, Dave Brubeck, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson... there are a lot of musical styles in my head mixing around.
I've been home-recording music for many years and am currently in a band playing original music (http://www.treadingbleu.com) with the wonderful @Kovbleu, my super-talented brother @guatecoop and amazing guitarist @slawbleu. I love writing/recording solo music as ZeCoop too, because my styles are all over the place.
Also check out my dad's page! @srcoops writes a ton of lyrics and we've collaborated on a lot of songs. He's very open to people using his lyrics so let him know if you'd like to use them!! 😀
Oh, and I run this thing on FAWM called the 4-Track Challenge, where people mail cassettes to each other and add one track at a time. Sound fun? It is!! Let me know if you want in and check out the songs at @fourtracktape
I do a lot of instrumental music, since I don't write lyrics, so if you have an idea, let me know. I can't guarantee a collaboration will work out, but I usually do a lot of collaborating. I do collaborations as a co-writing project and consider them complete when I find the one that fits. I've had multiple versions of songs from other people, during FAWM, but the one that I end up posting is the official song, in my mind. I'm always finding amazing new people on FAWM!
I still have not figured out MIDI yet, so most of the time, what you are hearing is me actually playing the instruments, including live drums. I write songs part by part and never quite know where they are headed, and very often get very deep in layers and atmospheres. I love painting with sound.
This is my 8th FAWM. It's always wonderful and something I look forward to. It's the best part of Winter! (...the only good part of winter?) 😉
All of my recordings, FAWM and otherwise, are on my bandcamp page (and they are all FREE to download - just enter $0):
2012 (Computer died and only did simple parts)
***Please come connect with me online!!!
** Any and all feedback is welcomed! ***
(I just may not listen to it, lol...)
**Just for the record... I very rarely mark songs as favorites... They are ALL my favorites. Sometimes my collaborators do, though.
And... I warmed up for FAWM with a cover song:
"Pale Blue Eyes"

Yeah, for sure! I've been listening to some of your stuff and really enjoying it. It's been a long time since I've worked with anyone to set lyrics to existing music, so that would be a welcome challenge. Look me up on 50/90 if you decide to do it, and if not maybe next FAWM!
Thanks for the listens, I appreciate it! Nice to see a few other people lingering in May 😊
Thank you so very much for your amazing feedback on my tunes and for taking the time to listen so intently. I'm really enjoying sticking around post fawm and getting to hear so many great compositions including yours!!
so many great collaborations and I love your work with Treading Bleu. I promise to dust off my Tascam 4-track and join your round-the-world Whirlwind collaboration Next time around. What a cool counterculture!!
Thank you so much for listening to my songs and for your lovely thoughtful comments!! I'm positively blushing. ^-^
Thanks for the great visit! Yes - I'm dreaming of warmer days too!
Thanks, too, for listening to both versions of Walking in Central Park. The non-moog version was created with Steinberg's Halion ROMpler. It did not, however, meet the strict requirements of the 'A Song A Synth' challenge, so I used the same parts with the Moog synth as the sound source. I like both.
Thank you for listening to, and commenting on, A Non-Gender Specific Object Being Consumed by Fire. I love the process of exploring a synth's capabilities, and seeing what kinds of sounds I can pull out of it. The process often inspires compositions, as was the case with this tune.
Thank you SOOOOOO much for listening through SOOOO many of my songs John. Mucho appreicated my chilli head friend!
Seems like the offendees have departed too! 😁
Thanks for listening to "Trapped In Amber", I am so glad you liked it. The sad thing about it is...I was so tired when I created it...I don't know how I played it...I have struggled to remember, I am now looking for someone that has a chord program...it is sad that it might be lost forever, but at least I got a fairly decent recording out of it and thank you for stopping in to give it a listen!!
Thank you for your kind words on my tracks.
I was pretty proud of how catchy the chorus on "Lady Jane" came out, my wife commented that it got stuck in her head so I knew that was a keeper. I want to work on the verses a bit since they didn't end up quite where I wanted them.
I have been trying to focus on the positive even when pointing out how awful things are or can be. I love a good downer but I would rather my sets not become an exercise in depression.
I did not really know what surf music was until a few years ago, I assumed the Beach Boys were "surf rock" and I called what is actually surf "spy guitar music". I was digging through my mother-in-laws records and came across the Ventures "Run Don't Walk" album which I took purely because the lady on the cover reminded me of Rizzo from Grease. I fell in love instantly and have since picked up quite a few of their albums.
Thanks for your recent comments. We have 10.5 months to collab before FAWM 2019. Let's get it done!
Thank you for taking the time to listen to and give feedback on my songs, I really appreciate it!
Thanks for your cool comment on Wise Woman, too.
Thank you for listening to so many of my songs and for all fantastic comments. <3
Thanks for your comment on “3 Drinks Later” - was so fun - glad you enjoyed it!
Can't wait to hear the last four-track tape. I directed cts to you - hopefully all is well!
Ooh I like your proposal! Sure. I can email you the guide track if you like?
Thank you for your kind comment on The Cusp <3. I really liked working on that one
Ha I'm the same! I play in all the synth parts as audio. I think I just prefer the groove you get that way rather than having the temptation to 'tighten' it up by quantising etc. But yeah there are those times when I'm like, damn why can't I play that in time...
Thanks! Will check out the volca bass. I recently got a korg minilogue which is loads of fun. I much prefer pressing buttons and moving faders etc and have had fun 'playing' the sound live as if were rather than using soft synths.
Thank you so much for your very kind words on its just not in you
Cool find though, that pianorgan!
Yeah, wasn't sure if U used an accordian, because U have lots of interesting instruments: like pump organs?
Sometimes I come up with chords that aren't even chords in theory!
Thanks for your comment and I really appreciated the listen on our song. I'm really glad we were able to get the 50s sound down! I'm glad you liked the background vocal. Unfortunately I had only time to record one vocal. Though some of them were recorded separately to accompany the ending verse sections. I''m glad you liked the "let's be meeting tonight" parts. Those were also my favorite parts of the song. Very hooky and memorable. I'm thinking that should've been the song title.
About your song, you're very welcome! I guess could explain the theory parts a bit. The IV is the subdominant chord, and the I is the root chord. The b3rd is a blue note referring to the median being flattened (i.e. in the key of C that would be Eb). Hope this helps! Lemme know if I need to explain it further. I don't use music theory to write songs either, that'll be too boring! I just use it to explain music. 😉 I do one want to use it for writing a song one day though. Sometimes I come up with chords tha
WHA…? You are just too cool for school Quadracool Champion!! You took the time to write 400 comments (400!!) and listen to all those songs (ears doin’ ok there?)! Thanks for your almighty contribution to our community. You have 400 thank you’s from your fellow FAWMers and from me! Excellent work and keep busting’ those zongs!!
Oh that's right, I knew about that Farfisa thing!
I'm glad you knew I was joking and appreciate the humor too. I figured you were. 😀
Thanks for the listen-through of my silly Exploding Teacups album. I had fun making it and I'm glad you had fun listening to it. How about a zecoop/metalfoot oldskool punk album one of these years? 😉
Thanks for listening! That was indeed an accordion on The Preacher and The Trumpeter. I don't use it often as it's hard to record well and it hurts my back, but the song seemed to call for it.
Hope you're staying warm; Spring will be here soon!
Sometimes I have this nightmarish thought that when I eventually do have kids, they won't like board games...
I'll have to go through and check out a few more of your songs. It always feels a little weird watch-listing someone in March, but then I remember that I'll reap all the benefits next February!
I couldn't help but do the D20 challenge. I was a bit of a table top game nerd in a previous life. My only regret is that I finally gave away my dice collection (which hadn't been used in years) upon moving last fall, so I had to use an online die. It felt like such a cop out.
Also, thanks for the listens! Especially glad you checked out / enjoyed Piano Bench, since that one hasn't gotten too much love this month. 😀
I just got to the end of Shades and Shadows and I'm like, "what? that's it? there's no more?" 😉
What a trip - I've listened to a handful of your tunes in the past, but never realised
a) the range of genres you cross
b) your dedication to the coolest guitar sounds, and
c) your production skills.
Man, you are so totally watchlisted for next time! 😁
Alrighty - starting the listen-thru today. Might take a while to finish, but I'm on it, slow and steady.
Looking forward to this. I think it's going to be good 😀
thanks for the swap - really enjoyed your stuff. you are a real as we say in aussie "fair dinkum musician" - loosley a capital R real musician. i never knew what was coming next other than i knew it would be good. oh for some of your musical and production skills. watch out next time i wanna write some lyrics - which is where my skill lies.
Good on ya mate. You are welcome to listen to what you want to but i did leave a list of numbers that will be on the album. Cheers.
I will pick 14 and slowly work through! I have a gig to play shortly but will finish listening in the next 24 hrs. Cheers
Hey man, I saw you in the Album Swap thread and thought I'd take a listen to your stuff. I picked the last 14 as your first 7 have already got phenomenal numbers of comments! people love you, man!
If you listen to mine you can omit the collab with Fuzzy, as tbh I didn't have a lot to do with that.
Yes!! Awesome! One of our good friends is moving back to Michigan so now I have another excuse to visit.
Thanks for your comments on Catherine in Love. It was a pleasure to work on. I checked out a bunch of the fourtracktape stuff -- wow! I want to find a 4-track by next FAWM 😁
Aces! I'm looking forward to it. Will start tomorrow morning... 😃
Thank you for the comments on "Stellar Remnants". I am glad you enjoyed it. I would love to rearrange this piece as a Concerto for Rock Band and Orchestra. That would just be a massive undertaking but fun!
My "Classical" composition voice is not always the same as my pop/rock voice.
Congrats on another awesome FAWM!! I’ll send you the wavs for “California Crush” soon!!
@zecoop i meant to leave this in your soundboard but put it on my own by accident. Don't know how to use FAWM tools tha well. In regard to your guitars: they sound really good. I've played a couple Breedloves at GC before and liked the way they sound. the 12 on one side and 6 on the other; yes that is the way I think. I need to get some good acoustic mics; I will look into the ones you mentioned. The Line 6 stuff is great for direct recording. I have a Line 6 amp that has a direct-out but it does make some hum, which is audible in some of our songs-I need to get a noise gate...
that was so helpful of you 🙏🏻✨
(I'm glad you like it)
Some listening... phone typo ugh
Did anyone else ever get a version of the Appendix song? From the titles here I can't tell. I was just wondering but you didn't say anything about the Collab thing so I figured I would ask. No worries either way looks like I have done listening to do though😊
Not to worry, cap'n. I'm dedicated to seeing it through. I believe I saw an email from FedEx international. I'll take a look and let you know what's what.
you are the best ever 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
How can I thAnk you:::
Fearless leader on the four track crusade
All around inspirational
Ect ect ect..
So happy I connnected with you..
Fugazi!!! I tumbled into your tumblr blog just now, browsing some of your photos. lol Okay, I think I've gone past this month's photo going backwards so I'll stop looking for now. Back to your music here - it's always a pleasure to hear what you come up with. Congratulations on your fawm win and thank you for all that you do to make this place so cheery joyous!
thanks for organizing! i almost want to do a whole FAWM of 4-tracking next year, now... 😀
Haha lolllll! I was afraid to be straight forward but I just couldn't hear the bass... Tried even to turn up the bass in my stereo but I couldn't hear it. It's nice to know my ear is working good. And the thing is - I never say something constructive about a song, especially didn't do it this year, But I know you guys are professionals so I just wanted to let you know what I hear and I was sure it will not be taken in the wrong way. You are a great band!
Thanks for the comments on Zombies 😀
I really like this one but I think I want to revisit it and make it bigger, fatter and more of a dance track 😀 I got all of March for fiddling about 😉 x
Hey thanks for the comments on Snowman 😀
Have a play about with it if you like. I'm going to have a twiddle if I get chance later on. But I've got 4 others to catch up on the recording for *zooms off*
dude, you're great. I'm so glad you exist.
Congrats on the win, my man! And thanks for leading the way with the cassette challenge and just an overall ambassador for this community. You, sir, are very much appreciated!
Thanks for checking out my song zecoop!
Woops, OK, link fixed!
Yay 14!!!! Congrats!! I'm so behind in listening/commenting. But you KNOW I'll be back to do all that as soon as I can. <3
Emailed you lyrics for Tape 3, and you should have the recording from Eric. 😀
I’m hoping for the “Family Coop” to fill up tracks three and four! 😀
Thanks for the comments on my Experimental and angry tracks. 😉 The Laurie Anderson comment is an interesting one - maybe in March I'll revisit that track and see if I can William Burroughs some stuff over the top. 😉 Thanks for the suggestion.
As for "Where I'm Going," I actually impressed myself with that one to be dead honest. I listened to it in my truck (to see how the mix was) and even though I was THERE, I can't believe I managed to pull off the balance of bassline/chord/picked notes I did in the first take. When we push ourselves, who knows . . . .
The bird is a true character. I still can't believe the louder one never chimed in.
did you say delicious?! 😝
that was awesome (your comment)
she did phenomenal
can't wait to catch up on yours again
Whatdayawantamedal? Well you’re getting one! You are SUPERB Tripletime Trooper! You took the time to write 300 comments and listen to all those songs! Thanks for your almighty contribution to our community. You have 300 thank you’s from your fellow FAWMers and from me! Excellent work and keep busting’ those zongs!!
All good! I find it typically sounds better clean than through my fuzz pedal, but that's all i have re: distortion so overdrive might work! Just do whatever sounds better to you 😀
I spy with my little eye, another ZeCoop comment on a song of mine! Thanks!
The Evolution Songwriter sample pack is ideal for someone like me in an apartment with thin walls, who likewise, no longer likes to practice playing guitar/bass. Those chords move kinda like a rolling wave, don't they? It's got me thinking of trying it on purpose at some point and not just taking advantage of clumsy measure-counting on my part 😀
Humbucker, and always the neck pickup! Seems to always sound better if you put it right near the neck pickup (well, until it becomes unbearably loud).
Thanks! I gave up micing my amp a few years back so the guitar is direct into the DAW, but through some chorus and light reverb. Not using the amp prevents feedback and the reverb helps flesh out the sound.
The three ebow parts are have on starting on C#, one on E and one on G (to cause a tritone with the C#). And then I just keep moving up whole tones, because that's all Fripp ever does! 😉
No 12 string! All ric 610! 😀
I've been told I should listen to that Irish band. 😉
You just made my day--the first time someone's said, "I wish I could play like that." Usually, that's how I feel. Thank you for commenting on my song.
Those responsible for the subtitles have been sacked.
I recommend July. Can even get quite hot. Well everything's relative. 😁 But yeah, I'll show you around if you're ever in the neighbourhood!
thanks so much for your input!
Oh that's great! You should come visit Oulu sometimes. 😀 Maybe summer? 😉 Or if you like cold and snow, then winter's great, too.
Thanks, I will have a listen now 😀
Thanks for the comments! 😀
Thank you so much for the feedback! I'm really glad you enjoyed! : )
Thank you for your kind comments on "Love Your Pet." I can't really whistle. I imagine you'd do great (you may have already) incorporating your whistling into your music. 😀
Actually, think I got it to work! Thanks!
Thanks for the info! Didn't realize the trick was the FAWM server. No biggie. I'll let the song stand on it's own without milking the cute pet photo factor, haha.
Hey, could I borrow your expertise? I searched the forums, but I couldn't find anything on how to put a picture in the liner notes and I know you've figured it out. Trying to put a pet photo for Love Your Pet Day. Thanks!
Hey @zecoop ,
Thanks for listening and commenting to "On Every Corner".
Would you like to share with me of which five bands you could think of?
It's always interesting to read what others hear and what influences might have crept in without me knowing it.
And..... what is a "Smell melody"?
That would be cool, be ashame not too collaborate. Plus I am running out of ideas for the looper pedal now 😝
Yes, the commenters (including you) have been very helpful regarding the song tags, and I've been updating them along the way. I had to move a few things around since the tag field is limited in number of characters, but shoegaze is there to stay! Thank you for the tag and also for your generous comments on the valentine song! 😀
How fascinating! I just watched a video about the vibra slap and the guy says it "approximates" the sound of a jaw bone with loose teeth... :-0 I never heard of it, but now I know - you just slap the vibra slap. Thanks for the photo of it too. It's so funny. 😀
I want one ...that accordion sound is great..
I sold my accordion...to heavy to play and it
was a little one...
Yes yes... *sigh*
On the other hand... today was really my last 'big push' day, looking at the week and a half left in February. So I'm glad I made use of it!
if I ever get over my sharing issues 😓
