Artist Bio

Influences:   Musical tastes all over the map - old REM, Beatles, Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, Frente, Throwing Muses, My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Cocteau Twins, The Sundays, Echo and the Bunnymen, Regina Spektor, Velvet Underground, The Cure, Devo, Bob Mould, Indigo Girls, Laurie Anderson, King Crimson, Rush, Yes, Chicago, Kate Bush, Joy Division, Led Zep, The Jam, John Wesley Harding, Peter Mulvey, Martin Sexton, Suzanne Vega, Dave Brubeck, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson... there are a lot of musical styles in my head mixing around.

I've been home-recording music for many years and am currently in a band playing original music (http://www.treadingbleu.com) with the wonderful @Kovbleu, my super-talented brother @guatecoop and amazing guitarist @slawbleu. I love writing/recording solo music as ZeCoop too, because my styles are all over the place.

Also check out my dad's page! @srcoops writes a ton of lyrics and we've collaborated on a lot of songs. He's very open to people using his lyrics so let him know if you'd like to use them!! πŸ˜€

Oh, and I run this thing on FAWM called the 4-Track Challenge, where people mail cassettes to each other and add one track at a time. Sound fun? It is!! Let me know if you want in and check out the songs at @fourtracktape

I do a lot of instrumental music, since I don't write lyrics, so if you have an idea, let me know. I can't guarantee a collaboration will work out, but I usually do a lot of collaborating. I do collaborations as a co-writing project and consider them complete when I find the one that fits. I've had multiple versions of songs from other people, during FAWM, but the one that I end up posting is the official song, in my mind. I'm always finding amazing new people on FAWM!

I still have not figured out MIDI yet, so most of the time, what you are hearing is me actually playing the instruments, including live drums. I write songs part by part and never quite know where they are headed, and very often get very deep in layers and atmospheres. I love painting with sound.

This is my 8th FAWM. It's always wonderful and something I look forward to. It's the best part of Winter! (...the only good part of winter?) πŸ˜‰

All of my recordings, FAWM and otherwise, are on my bandcamp page (and they are all FREE to download - just enter $0):

Thanks for the comments on my Experimental and angry tracks. πŸ˜‰ The Laurie Anderson comment is an interesting one - maybe in March I'll revisit that track and see if I can William Burroughs some stuff over the top. πŸ˜‰ Thanks for the suggestion.

As for "Where I'm Going," I actually impressed myself with that one to be dead honest. I listened to it in my truck (to see how the mix was) and even though I was THERE, I can't believe I managed to pull off the balance of bassline/chord/picked notes I did in the first take. When we push ourselves, who knows . . . .

The bird is a true character. I still can't believe the louder one never chimed in.

    Thanks again.

Whatdayawantamedal? Well you’re getting one! You are SUPERB Tripletime Trooper! You took the time to write 300 comments and listen to all those songs! Thanks for your almighty contribution to our community. You have 300 thank you’s from your fellow FAWMers and from me! Excellent work and keep busting’ those zongs!!

  • @dunwich  17 hours

All good! I find it typically sounds better clean than through my fuzz pedal, but that's all i have re: distortion so overdrive might work! Just do whatever sounds better to you πŸ˜€

  • @postcardhelicopters  17 hours

I spy with my little eye, another ZeCoop comment on a song of mine! Thanks!

The Evolution Songwriter sample pack is ideal for someone like me in an apartment with thin walls, who likewise, no longer likes to practice playing guitar/bass. Those chords move kinda like a rolling wave, don't they? It's got me thinking of trying it on purpose at some point and not just taking advantage of clumsy measure-counting on my part πŸ˜€

  • @dunwich  17 hours

Humbucker, and always the neck pickup! Seems to always sound better if you put it right near the neck pickup (well, until it becomes unbearably loud).

  • @dunwich  18 hours

Thanks! I gave up micing my amp a few years back so the guitar is direct into the DAW, but through some chorus and light reverb. Not using the amp prevents feedback and the reverb helps flesh out the sound.

  • @dunwich  18 hours

The three ebow parts are have on starting on C#, one on E and one on G (to cause a tritone with the C#). And then I just keep moving up whole tones, because that's all Fripp ever does! πŸ˜‰

  • @toms  19 hours

    No 12 string! All ric 610! πŸ˜€

  • @bradbrubaker  1 day

I've been told I should listen to that Irish band. πŸ˜‰

  • @oaksnprairie  1 day

You just made my day--the first time someone's said, "I wish I could play like that." Usually, that's how I feel. Thank you for commenting on my song.

  • @pinky  3 days

Actually, think I got it to work! Thanks!

  • @pinky  3 days

Thanks for the info! Didn't realize the trick was the FAWM server. No biggie. I'll let the song stand on it's own without milking the cute pet photo factor, haha.

  • @pinky  3 days

Hey, could I borrow your expertise? I searched the forums, but I couldn't find anything on how to put a picture in the liner notes and I know you've figured it out. Trying to put a pet photo for Love Your Pet Day. Thanks!

    Hey @zecoop ,

Thanks for listening and commenting to "On Every Corner".
Would you like to share with me of which five bands you could think of?
It's always interesting to read what others hear and what influences might have crept in without me knowing it.
And..... what is a "Smell melody"?

  • @seemanski  3 days

That would be cool, be ashame not too collaborate. Plus I am running out of ideas for the looper pedal now 😝

  • @ihelen 4 days

Yes, the commenters (including you) have been very helpful regarding the song tags, and I've been updating them along the way. I had to move a few things around since the tag field is limited in number of characters, but shoegaze is there to stay! Thank you for the tag and also for your generous comments on the valentine song! πŸ˜€

  • @ihelen 4 days

How fascinating! I just watched a video about the vibra slap and the guy says it "approximates" the sound of a jaw bone with loose teeth... :-0 I never heard of it, but now I know - you just slap the vibra slap. Thanks for the photo of it too. It's so funny. πŸ˜€

Thank you so SO much for your super encouraging words on "Other Side of Her Heart!"

  • @oblivionratula  1 week

I had a weird thing with a Ric 12 that came along at a 'must-buy' price yet when I played it, it was just dead to me. I've played others I considered trading kidneys for, but this one, for whatever reason, well, it explained the low asking price, that's for sure (and I don't shy from guitars based on price - all of mine are 'deals' of some kind). Some planks of wood just don't have it. And acoustic or electric, I just seem far pickier about 12s than 6.

The baritone is amazing - other than my (cheap, again) Martin D1, it's the only guitar I've used for FAWM so far. The Tele and Gretsch are getting jealous. πŸ˜‰ I'm really impressed with the cost/feel/value of Reverend. I'll definitely check out their 12-string offerings in the coming years. Rock on.

  • @oblivionratula  1 week

Cool 12-string! My main 'growing up guitar,' - age 17 through late 20s - was/is a Yamaha acoustic 12. It's seen better days (bellied out so intonation is a bit wonky on the dusty frets), but there's nothing like that jangle. I've eyed Rics, Gretsch, and a few others on the electric side. Thinking Birthday Guitar 2020 (2018's was my Reverend Descent baritone. Yummy.)

  • @karlsburg25  1 week

Massive thanks matey for the Sunday comments. That was also shed loads of fun to make i must say. Took and age to find that manchester lead guitar sound though!!

  • @devin  1 week

Good sir, I hope you are feeling better each day! If there is anything I can do, just let me know, OK?

(Well, except give you an appendix. I lost mine a while ago.)

Picking up a nylon string classical guitar is clearly the road to fingerstyle. The extra width got me going with my fat fingers.

I have the entry level Yamaha, and it sits in the front room. Surprising how many times I (or others) will just pick it up for a few minutes.

To start the fingerpicking thing, just fret any chord, and pick Thump-Ring-Middle-Pointer with your strumming hand, on any strings you wish. Low E, High E-B-G sounds mint with a G chord.

Don't tell the banjo pickers I said to try that!

  • @sapient  2 weeks

Sounds good. I might even have a go later tonight... And I have a FAWM hosting account, so all it needs is for me to be added as a collab partner and I can do the rest.
Do you want me to do a specific one, or you ok for me to choose? Tempted to do the one I commented on...

  • @sapient  2 weeks

Heh heh... I can do that 😈
Usually when I'm done with a collab i get it posted against the original song. Will that work, or should I be cheeky and post it anew?

Hi mate glad to see you're bringing the skills again this year! I've been looking forward to this for a while as I've got a bit more spare time so want to try and create better recordings - but there's no way I can keep up with your output with more than one instrument!

  • @kovbleu  2 weeks

LOL. Yeah, I was going to put the definition in the notes, but figured it'd be more fun for people to look up if they wanted too.

    πŸ˜€

  • @owl  2 weeks

Yeah I see in the forums other people are having the same issue but I tried the suggested fixes and it's still not working 😞

  • @standup  2 weeks

Lap steel is fun. I’ve had mine for 15 years, and it’s an uneasy relationship. Tune it to an open chord, and do a song that’s 1-4-5. Don’t play all the strings! Find the two-note things and figure out some 3-note runs. Rock the slide a bit, don’t leave it still.

  • @lenigmusx1  2 weeks

    ZeCoop,

First, thank you again for your comments! Second,
Can we team up for a Collaboration this time around. If you have something your unsure on back burner and you want fresh ears or vocals, Drums whatever. Or vise versa.

  • @owl  2 weeks

Thanks for coming by and commenting! None of the FAWM-hosted songs are playing for me today for some reason, so i'll be back later to listen to your new stuff, looks like you're on a roll!

  • @iwilleatyou 2 weeks

Yeah that works. Love the sound of the amped guitars, real drums etc. Breath of fresh air.

  • @w1n  2 weeks

We're having more snow than in years and when it doesnt snow its so cold here in Oslo, I get annoyed every morning when I look out. Could probably only muster a rabid grindcore/harsh noise tune to convey my emotions towards snow.

  • @caterwauler 2 weeks

Out with it John... Cooperider is a pseudonym for Craigslist isn't it? Baha! Must be the snare then, that's what I had in my mind about it. The old snare wasn't as alive I think. You did play it 8 times, so could be too.
