Say hello to teen singing sensation Whambi!
Whambi is lighting up the charts with her debut single:
I: Wanna/Sex You [Up; And Down (Baby, Baby, Baby (Baby, Baby, Baby))].
"This is more fame than I ever dreamed of back in Springfield. I lived in a little house with a little yard and a little momma. But I had dreams in my head. And now I'm...here," says the sixteen year old from her motel room in Detroit. In a few hours, she will entertain the lunchtime crowd at The Chesterfield Town Center.
And what does Whambi think about her first single?
"The single? It's hot. It was written over a number of years with a number of people, none of whose names I can remember at the moment. But, clearly, the single's hot. It's about human interaction, and meeting and stuff. And partying. There's a lot of partying."
"All the true, deep things that people like you and me, and you, go through. On a daily basis," she sips at a moccachino. "Deep. That's what the listeners expect. And I give it to them."
Whambi has taken criticism for the single's odd punctuation. "People ask me about the punctuation, and I just tell them it's a window. It's a window in. To the deeper side of me. To the deeper side. Of Whambi. That's what I say. That is what I actually tell them."
This summer, a tour may be in the works. "I'm looking forward to leaving Springport for good and finally heading out into the world," she says between high pitched giggles. Whambi may get the chance to open stadium shows for two of her favorite artists: the High Fructose Corn Syrup Girls (http://fawm.org/fawmers/hfcsgirls/) and the SugarKrew (http://fawm.org/fawmers/sugarcrew/).
She namechecks both these artists in her first single.
"Oh my god, I learned everything I know from the HFCSGs. All my best dance moves, makeup tips, all of it. And I tried to tell them things too, like, the best doctors that do botox injections, the best places to go for rehab, all of that. Girl power."
Her eyes light up when talking about The SugarKrew. "Oh my god, the SugarKrew? You can tell how amazing they sing, just from the way they dance," she gushes. "They're so cute...especially the cute one."
Through her rising fame, Whambi stays as grounded as she possibly can, never forgetting why she performs:
"For all my family, back in Springsteen."
