Bio

Here's my bad idea for February. I don't necessarily mean bad, as in not good, but you can be the judge of that.
So my goal for FAWM 2012 is to write a themed album (probably an EP) called Sapphic Distractions. These songs will range from mildly to heavily erotic.

*DISCLAIMER
For those of you who may be put off by songs with sexual content, you will want to steer clear of my February offerings. Outside of collabs, the majority of my songs will be based on erotic lesbian themes. As a courtesy to the general FAWMer, these songs will be marked as NSFW. You have been warned/tantalized.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT 2feb: Some of you have expressed interest in collabing with me on the Sapphic EP. To you I say, let's do it!

I pre-FAWMed a song. It's a decent warm-up for what is to come.
http://youtu.be/zuKGhz9J0HA

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE 5mar12: Who'd thunk Sapphic Distractions would end up with so many songs? Not I, but I'm pleased. More than anything, writing an album with such a theme was a great exercise in free artistic expression. Thanks to my collaborators who helped me make all these songs, and thanks to the many positive comments I received from you all. Now the question, what to do with this album???

Have listened to all your songs -the range, quality, musicianship and inventiveness is stunning. These songs should be on radio and in record stores right now!

Hi Valerie, hmmm... someone else asked me about the vocal effects on my f.a.w.m. song. From memory I think the lead vocal has some compression, the Steinberg amp simulator plugin, and the Steingberg 'Cloner' plugin (which I believe was set to something called 'robot voice')... and the backing vocals probably have some compression, and the Steingberg 'rotary' plugin. And yes, I think I fell apart a few times during fawm wink

Thanks for the comment on "Pumpin"! DragonDreams has offered me some help from his bass to 'save' that song for me! I'm looking forward to what he sends... Glad it caused a smile!

Thanks very much Val! I wanted to have a president song out on Presidents Day, but as you know I fell a bit behind. I knew a little bit about his story, but I really should list Wikipedia as a collaborator on that one. I'll be checking out more of your album now that I'm feeling better...thanks again for your well wishes. smile

    Hey, you win!!! big_smile

Thanks for the comment on the last thing. You're right, I don't think I like it, you caught me. I think I will look at it like this: I learned a little something, and I like pieces of it. I would like to "accidentally" drop it on the floor, pick up only those pieces, and sweep the rest into the dustbin. wink
  •  nicksypniewski 2 months ago
Hey Val, thanks for the comment on Samantha. Glad you liked it. The strings kind of save it, because my voice sure ain't big_smile Thanks again.

  •  devin 2 months ago
    Congrats on 14, woo-Hoo!!

I ended up with my annual FAWM-cold, for the final week this time, and I can't hear right now. Which is really kinda funny. I'm looking at the playback meter thinking "this should be loud", when my wife walks in saying "that's pretty loud!".

So I'm going to concede that, being only a man, I won't get my first eva Lesbian Lust Bed created...sorry Val, sad. You've done a great job rocking this concept....and Iocane Power would love to open for you!
  • tinam 2 months ago
thanks for the tip about the guitar sound ....unfortunately i use a digitek amp modeller

Hey, Val. Thanks for your comments. Superskirmish applies to "12 on the 26th" (at least I think it does?). I just wrote and recorded in the hour, like a typical skirmish. Now "microskirmish"... that might be a little more impressive! smile

I've got a few tracks I'm trying desperately to complete...one of which is a song that is in direct answer to a few of your selections here. You've been quite influential this FAWM. I'm not sure if I should kiss you or run away from you! Haha! You've been killin' it, girl. Just the way you brought the concept album through the stages is staggering. \m/ Rock on, lady.

Thank you for listening and commenting on my keyboard submission Val. I know what you mean, I think probably the best thing is to play with the styles for inspiration but not submit as a composition but I wasn't sure. I try to avoid using samples although I know they are very popular. Difficult though as I hear so many different instruments which are out of my reach if I don't use keys. Thank you again smile
  • bska13 2 months ago

Thanks for the note. I'm listening to that song right now because I had completely forgotten it. Yeah, I think I like it, too. I might have to record that one for real.

Great great stuff Val...congrats on executing the concept with such smart hotness!

I'm almost done my project with Leslie, so if you need any help...just tell me what to do.

Otherwise, is it OK if I keep watching? smile

You're most welcome. I like the way your mind works. wink But for me, Rachel Shelley was what that show was all about. And I agree about the writing, and some of the characters drove me to loathing, but even so.. big_smile

Hey Val. Thanks for the comment on the album art. Yes it is my own artwork. It started with a hand drawn scetch that I scanned and cleaned up before creating what you see.I did all of the work in Paint .NET (as a develeoper, I'm a big fan of open source software). My best friend has this Rolling Rock beer light that I've been trying to talk him out of for years. That's where the idea and the colors came from. I don't think it's really done, or maybe it never will be. New background image for 50/90 maybe? Hire a sign maker to do it in neon? Or maybe some other half-cocked idea. After all, it's art. Right?
  •  billysea 3 months ago
Hey Val, I sometimes worry I overstep and the Browns to the Superbowl was a prime example (it doesn't stop me from writing it....but I do wonder sometimes...haha) Anyway, if I get you to laugh at one of my borderline songs, that makes me happy. Anyway, just wanted to let you know I appreciate your comments....and I will listen to the rest of your songs when I get a chance (as long as it is ok I blush a little) LOL

Thank you so much Val for your great comment on my mysterious dance. I'm delighted you like it. I know, it needs other instruments. I wish I could play other instruments but all I have is a piano and a very basic keyboard, my keyboard is not really up to the job so... Richard posted a beautiul lyric right after you commented smile

Thanks, Val! I've just started to learn the harp so this seemed a good time/place to make myself work a little harder at it.

And I don't say it often enough (although I will catch up) but I love what you do! smile
  •  scottmcb 3 months ago
Indeed, when our brother powers combine we are a veritable powerhouse of...er...power! We've done some collaborating in the past in various musical projects and maybe we will again this FAWM. Time will tell. (Honestly, it's difficult for me because he's much more talented and musically knowledgeable than I, so I get scared.)
  • funkdaddy 3 months ago
Hmmm, the vocal effect on that song would be the doubling I think. On that one I tried to stick pretty close to the main vocal but there's parts where I couldn't help but harmonize a little! smile One thing I've found to help is to get my main vox sitting where I like them with EQ and then EQing the doubled track the exact opposite (usually high pass with a bit of a boost in the mids and mid-highs for the lead, gentle low pass and bump up the low end for the doubled track) Gets things glued together nicely.
  • funkdaddy 3 months ago
Hey val, I didn't realize Filefreak had the files private by default so only my IP could access them sad Fixed it up smile I think you'll like "Just Like Love"
  •  helenseviltwin 3 months ago
It's happening. The opening is fermenting in my brain. So, the start of it will defo happen.

Thanks for the comment! I was singing fairly full-out actually - I just live at home so I have to find quick moments when my parents are both out (lunch break) to sing anything OR whisper sing at 3am.

Anyway, how on earth did I miss the awesomeness of your EP this year? The soundcard on my work comp doesn't work, but when I get home I'm diving in.
