Bio

FAQ

1. Many of my earliest memories include singing, making up songs, and "playing" instruments.

2. Sang so bad in 3rd grade, I was not allowed to be in the choir.

3. Tried out for drums in the 5th grade, but didn't pass the coordination test.

4. Played saxophone in school cause it was the coolest instrument next to drums.

5. Taught myself to play guitar in high school and began writing songs.

6. Taught myself to sing in college.

7. Formed several bands in and after college. Best one was named "Weird Relatives."

8. Tried to be a working musician, but didn't realize you actually had to work to do that.

9. Got a real job, stopped making music, then years later found FAWM. Hallelujah!

10. Put together a collection of songs called "Fierce Summer." Download it free: http://valeriecox.bandcamp.com

    Let'er rip!
    Cheers! MLB
  •  Nancy Rost 5 days ago
Oh, P.S. - we can collab off-season, no worries. I was pretty overwhelmed last month anyway!
  •  Nancy Rost 5 days ago
Thanks for all the listening and commenting! I'm in a cafe on wireless while I wait for an appointment to fix my modem at home, so I'll look forward to catching up on yours when I can listen again. "Road Trip It Girl" is indeed demoed, just on the HFCSG page: http://fawm.org/songs/9106/
  •  Donna 5 days ago
Thanks for your comment on "Zap My Ukelyrics", Val. wink
Glad you liked "playly". tongue I love making up words, though sometimes get taken to task for it. wink
  •  macroman 5 days ago
When you posted 'Broken Glass', you indicated that you may continue to work on it. If you do come up with a newer version, please let me know. You can PM me on the Muse (username Rod).
  •  devin 6 days ago
I'm getting close to declaring "Devin must visit Texas!". Right now it's a want, but it could progress to a need, as I think about all the learning I need to do about my adoptive State!
  •  devin 6 days ago
OK, so I may be dense, because today this little piece of potential trivia surfaced in my head:
    - If I cook a variety of food on an outdoor grill, you call it "cookout"
    - BBQ is reserved for the actual act of cooking a beef brisket (did I get that right?)
    - and so, my piece of trivia that needs to be verified is:

Does BBQ = "Beef Brisket" Q-something?

(Yes, staring at snow is driving me crazy...)

What does the "Q" stand for? "Quarter"?
  • Hannah O'Reilly 1 week ago
Hey Valerie! Thanks for stopping back by. There'll be more music up once I have time to breathe and record the darn things! February seemed shorter than usual this year!!! smile H
  •  Bruce H. McCosar 1 week ago
Hey, thanks for the comment on "The Last Star Before Daybreak" -- I've got to make my rounds and see everyone I've followed off this weekend. Odd to think I have to wait a whole year until FAWM 2011 ... this one was special. Thanks to the weather I had nearly 14 solid days to record (minus a power failure here and there).
  • Hi Valerie. Thanks for commenting on my song. Congrats on completing FAWM too.
  •  Rick Amorphis 1 week ago
I mention you in my liner notes for this song ( http://fawm.org/songs/10458/ ) because 'Don't You Love Me' inspired me to write it. Have I told you lately that I love you??
  •  Beth Kille 1 week ago
Congrats.....hoping you'll address that "hungry" issue now:)
  •  StevenTylerPJs 1 week ago

    DDDDDDDDDAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMM!!! Valerie, you're killin' me.
  •  cts 2 weeks ago
I sent you some lyrics. I'm thinking: basic guitar/melody/vocals on your end. I'll drop the vocal icings and other additives. What do you think?
  • oilsdragon 2 weeks ago
"2. Sang so bad in 3rd grade, I was not allowed to be in the choir."

OMG!!!! ME TOO!!! ...Fortunately, the music teacher at my school was one of those truly amazing, patient people, and he took the four of us who were so helplessly bad and made an "after school choir" in which he taught us how to breathe and sing properly. My god, that man deserves to be knighted.
  •  cts 2 weeks ago
So...a collab is due us, lady. Seriously. You and me suppose to be making some jelly. When will that happen?
  •  dreamscuba 2 weeks ago
Hi Valerie, thanks for the comments on my song. Yes the story is true but for my wife, not me.
  •  Billy Sea 2 weeks ago
Only 4 songs to go. Hey, where is your "all about" parody? That is a totally quick way to grab another song for you total smile

Even without that, you can totally get to 14...no sweat smile
  • I may be a little overcommitted for the remainder of FAWM to write anything to throw your way, but I definately want to bookmark you for collaboration at some point in the not-too-distant future!
  • Chriddof 2 weeks ago
Thanks for the nice comment. I added the nsfw tag to that track, I forgot about that bit at the end big_smile
  • Kim & Justin 2 weeks ago

Oh silly Valerie (re: sung out) I admire your voice SO much....you so kick my butt and more!
And on the * ahem * other song....you know...that's a very good question and I'm still not sure. It was really hard not to laugh when they first came in, but once I got over that hump it was fine! I think I just really, really wanted a good recording tongue
  •  Helen 2 weeks ago
I got it. I have some ideas, but will probably work on them tomorrow, when my brain is less tired smile
  •  Helen 2 weeks ago

    thanks for the cool comment.
  •  Bruce H. McCosar 3 weeks ago
Hey, thanks for the zong-bust on "Strange Lights in the Sky" -- the funny thing about timing is, it's relative. I can listen to it and hear the mistakes ... I decided for this album, I'd just put them out there regardless. Once I'm done I'm done, and so be it wink So thanks for the vote of confidence!
  • Brianna Rose 3 weeks ago
Thank you for the comments smile
  • sandman313 3 weeks ago
Yeah smooth.. like... uhhh... Chocolate smile
  • sandman313 3 weeks ago
Val... I've got my rough track done of "Unnatural". Here's the link to listen to it.
I could add some shaker, fretless bass and a smooth lead to it.

    http://boxstr.net/files/6375605_psrsw/UnNatural.mp3

Let me know what you think and if you want more instrumentation. I'll add tine instumentation above and post it.
  •  macroman 3 weeks ago
Awesome Val. I've just posted another one that might interest you. http://fawm.org/songs/3783/
    Rod.

Totally my pleasure, you killed it smile
  •  Daddyschu 4 weeks ago
thanks for the comment Valerie. I'm going to download Fierce Summer now and give a listen. That is so cool you put a collection up! smile

EDIT: OMG--- listening to the first 40 seconds of "I Like What I See" just Blew Me AWAY!!! ROCK ON GIRL!!!
  •  Billy Sea 4 weeks ago
LOL, the bad thing was that the song took me like 3 minutes to write the lyrics so it was all "done" in around 10 minutes and every time I screwed up a line I muttered under my breath, but this is a crap song why won't it just get recorded so I can move on...lol (well, actually there were other things I muttered under my breath, but we won't go there smile
  •  Morti 1 month ago
Start with a funky bass line and keep everything else pretty simple, I reckon that's pretty much disco. If you add classical music samples it becomes Strangle Disco (extra points for talking about Beethoven's howlingly melodious new bass guitar, also stick a little word play in there).
  •  Scott Lake 1 month ago
Thanks for you nice comment on my attempt at Christian/Humor/Irony/Pop-Punk. I'll be coming round to listen soon.
  •  Billy Sea 1 month ago
Hello Val, I'm not sure if you are even interested in collabs but I was busting some zongs today and reading these I heard your wonderful voice in my head. http://fawm.org/songs/1869/

  •  Kelly McPherson 1 month ago
I usually start with the music and see where it takes me with the lyrics. How about you?
  •  cts 1 month ago
Okay, so once I've finished up with Donna's tune, I wanted to let you know that I'm going to pick back up the idea that idea we had started on. Man, so many ideas...anyway, I'm going to see what's what and let you know if I need anything additional.
  •  Dan Vaillancourt 1 month ago

  • Alayna the Alto 1 month ago
Thanks for replying back! xD Yes, I do plan to use my saxophone in some of my songs; I used it in my most recent one, actually. I haven't uploaded it yet (at least, as I'm typing this message I haven't. LOL) But I plan on uploading it very soon. I'm still very inexperienced at sax, though... I've been playing for just a few days over a year. But I love the instrument already. xD

  • Nick Sypniewski 1 month ago
    Valerie,
Thanks very much for the comment and the praise. As I've said in my bio (and elsewhere), lyrics usually take forever and then are "meh"... But those all came in a burst of an hour or two - first time that's ever happened to me. Glad you enjoyed them.

Makes sense that it brightened your day because I was sincerely pissed off when writing it smile

    Thanks again
  • nightengale 1 month ago
Hi Val, I was wondering if you'd be up for a female vox country song?
  • jelehfish 1 month ago
Re: books. Briefly, via 'glitch' in April of last year, a number of titles were removed and have since been replaced. I just thought it was more of big deal than it was made out to be at the time. Thanks for the comment!
