Bio

FAWM#2 for me. I really want to do some live playing again, so limber up for a fawmover in Sheffield. Partner in song's got other fish to fry, so I'm on my own again. This FAWM I'm hoping to mix some straight-ahead pop with crazy experiments, and even though I'm waay behind I'm still aiming for 14 this year.

* Stars next to songs indicate best tracks so far IMAO.

My setup, if you're interested, is very lo-fi, If you like my recording style, my 'secret' is: tape saturation on vocals, drums, and reverbs.

hey class on the airplay, i got that before and was beaming for ear to ear... thought i was a god damn rock jesus christ for a few hours big_smile hopefully its the first of many
  •  Jocelyn 1 week ago
Thanks. I thought I was not going to finish this year, but somehow I did. Collabing with the Toronto Fawmily helps too though. We get together and songs just appear out of nowhere!
  •  Jocelyn 1 week ago
Ahah, I just read your comment on my copy of Water Fountain and on Helen's. I am not offended, actually, I was laughing. You should hear me swear. I try not to pass it on to other children though. tongue Thanks for the comment. I've heard high praise about your songs so I'm going to listen to them.
  • paulh1237 1 week ago
Hellor mr. I was thinking of doing any of the following with full band:
Lines and Spaces, Jargon, Everybody Hates A Joker, Sigh. Maybe Eyes-Wide/Strobe-Lightning/pavements. Just pick a couple you think wud be fun aha; or that your desperate to drum to..
    I'm rather excited..
  •  John Crossman 1 week ago
Hey, thanks for the comment on my gospel-ish song. Yeah, me on all the vocal parts.
  •  Vom Vorton 1 week ago
I saw the Kills live once and was pleasantly surprised. I don't think I've ever heard them on record though!

Hopefully I'll get some listening time this weekend, but then I'm off to Norway for a week. After that I'll get on with updating some of my demos and some SERIOUS commenting.
  • itneverhappened 1 week ago
Thanks for the fine comments, glad you like them. I will try to work on them in march, so hopefully they will only get better..
  •  Benjamin Nolan 1 week ago
Yaaay! big_smile In that case, then, I may prod you towards the beginning. smile
  •  Vom Vorton 1 week ago
Good work on sneaking up to 14! I'm struggling to catch up on listening at the moment - due to real life's annoying habit of taking over - but hopefully I'll be able to check out your other songs this weekend.

I quite liked Scarfo, by the way. I've got a couple of their singles, they were a good band. Didn't one of them end up in The Kills?
  •  Benjamin Nolan 1 week ago
Haha, yeah. smile You going to be around for 50/90? smile
  • Wash Away 1 week ago
Hey, ill be back to listen to all your stuff some time later when Im not so busy.
  • paulh1237 1 week ago
I'm only just started to have a gander on other folks stuff post February while regaining my breathe at the same time aha so that could be a part of it! That would be immense; at least two of the tunes are band-y in my head as I remember..
  •  Benjamin Nolan 2 weeks ago
Yeah, it's a sample best used in isolation, TBH! tongue It'd work better in a gap.
  •  Benjamin Nolan 2 weeks ago
Ah, the dog whistle thing is a sample from one logic's drum kits. It's a weird sort of D+B hit. Sounds a bit odd in there, TBH. hmm
  •  Benjamin Nolan 2 weeks ago
Soundproofing and 128-channel fully-automated desks. wink
  •  Benjamin Nolan 2 weeks ago
Next year, I am setting aside a day or six to invade your studio. tongue
  •  Greg Lines 2 weeks ago
smile thanks for the message - I did it!!!!

14 songs, 12 of which with demos recorded. I'm pretty chuffed!
  • weakness 2 weeks ago
oh man.. you just ripped out a ton of stuff.. I'll listen to it throughout the week!
I've got three ideas left so I posted three blank songs! Thanks for reminding me!
  • KATO NiNETAILS 2 weeks ago
Ah nice to see some last minute action on your part. Tomorrow at work I'm going to be having a Tobermory listening party! Congrats, and thanks for all the comments!
  • paulh1237 2 weeks ago
    your getting there..
you really have to do it now surely...!

I have two accounts cos I forgot about last year's and started a new one. However, I have recorded NOTHING as my computer has let me down. sad

Top work on yours (as expected), by the way! Will continue to give it listens throughout March AND BEYOND.
  •  Vom Vorton 2 weeks ago
Apparently she's already made good progress, so it sounds like it wasn't too severe, luckily. Still one of those horrible "this can happen to young, healthy people with absolutely no warning" things! Hopefully she'll make a full recovery and all that. I don't really know how these things work.
  •  The Cow Exchange 2 weeks ago
Yeah, chat activity sort of ebbs and flows. And the chat does seem to think people quit when they haven't; I imagine it has to do with some sort of pinging behavior. But we're there, honest! You may want to lurk a little longer. Of course, it's end-of-fawm frenzy time too.
  •  The Cow Exchange 2 weeks ago
Hey, it's not nice to hit-and-run the chat wink Come back here!
  •  Vom Vorton 2 weeks ago
She had a stroke! At 28! It's pretty fucked up and terrifiying. Going to visit tomorrow.

My crunk does seem to basically = numan. I'm OK with that.
  • pifie 2 weeks ago
Just because it's fun, let me show you where I stole from in that song tongue : Foo Fighters ( "This is a call" - all the cornyness of the chords ), The Hives ( "Walk Idiot Walk" - the one-chord riff) , Danko Jones ( "My love is bold" - the lyrics at the end of the chorus), QOTSA ( the drums - using kick and snare, like, maybe "No one knows" ), and some corny 80s rock and roll like "Got my mind set on you"
In the end, some Kyuss/QOTSA reminiscence.

I should re record the vocals... there are parts where I mispronounce, forget some words, and even don't know how to sing it. It's too high-pitched for me, too. I guess I could convince the lyricist to sing it...

Oh, and I don't know shit about mixing LOL... I just put together the tracks and put the levels and pan in a way I like... no effects whatsoever.

Thanks for the review, man. I really apreciate it coming from you smile
  • John Natiw Music 2 weeks ago
Thanks for listening. Not getting as much done as I'd like, but still trying.
  •  Dan Wallbank 2 weeks ago
Hate to admit it, but I can't play piano! It's all sequenced. Thanks though!
  • Roberta 3 weeks ago
Thanks a lot for your comment! I'm glad you liked the song big_smile
  •  Winlock Toledo 3 weeks ago
Thanks for your feedback on Deus ex Machina - you are right, I just transcribed my notes wrong at 2 in the morning.
  •  Vom Vorton 3 weeks ago
Ah, Late of the Pier. The second best thing ever to come out of Castle Donington, after me when I left my horrible job there!

50/90 is too bloody difficult. However, I'll be trying it again this year! I think more collaborations are the way forward, I've really enjoyed the ones I've done so far this FAWM.
  •  Vom Vorton 3 weeks ago
I need to hit 15 too because I've got A New Low counting twice on my current list. Should be OK! I've only done one instrumental filler song so I can definitely fall back on another one of those if I get stuck smile

I've not been able to have any time off work this month due to colleagues being on Maternity leave and increased workloads and stuff. Which is a bit rubbish. But I shall conquer nonetheless!
  •  Vom Vorton 3 weeks ago
Melt Down All Harmonicas has me intrigued! Good title!

Also Pirate Affairs - inspired by the eyepatch? Hope all is improving on the health front.
  •  Rick Cannon 3 weeks ago
    Glad you like the song.
As for "REM style," you might want to check out my songs "Angel Hair Witness" and/or "Seeds". They'll give you a feel for my full band style. haha. This one probably won't be quite as intense, though.
  •  Benjamin Nolan 3 weeks ago
Works fine here... hmm Tried clicking the download link directly?
  •  Josh Belville 3 weeks ago
tober, thank you for your comments, but your one about mixing totally went over my head. big_smile haha

all these "passes" and "1khz" things, they make no sense to me. sad is there a "mixing for dummies" book somewhere?
  • paulh1237 3 weeks ago
whenever i'm free like all the time.. aka a student lol.. bit desperate to record!. loving occupado (y)
  •  Vom Vorton 3 weeks ago
Ah, that's strange. I've had no trouble with it in Cubase. If it's not showing up at all then I guess you might be stuck, unfortunately! It's just sample based though so maybe the samples are available separately somewhere...
  •  Vom Vorton 3 weeks ago
The MIDI trigger notes for Dr Sid are an octave higher than standard for some reason. Could that be the problem? Or does it just not work for you at all?

Thanks for comments! Hope you manage to have a productive last week, two songs is NOT enough for me!
  •  Benjamin Nolan 3 weeks ago
Actually, on that front, I'm organising a telemegacollab with a few people. You want in on it? E-mail me if you're interested. smile

For our song Dream Wheel/ Ringmaster Waking the title was really invented when posting it. I asked argenstock what he wanted it to be titled and he said dream wheel. so i also put mine. we were just going off of our preception of dreams and craziness of dreams. we might record a demo of something for that one. i can't promise anything lol. thanks for being interested. happy FAWMing big_smile

yes, it's written on my old 50's harmony tenor.
the guitar I reserve for such simple, powerful songs....so far!
  • sancho 1 month ago
Thank you for the kind words!
  •  Chelsea Clinton 1 month ago
Ta also for the kind words. Now get on and record more songs! You can't go out in a single-song blaze of glory. Not after a start like that...
  • KATO NiNETAILS 1 month ago
Quit lolligagging! Maybe, if you're having troubles (or even if you're not having troubles) a collaboration is in order? Could be interesting...
  • Magnus Løken 1 month ago
    Thanks for the comment!
I use a Korg Kaossilator to make the brass sounds. It's a tiny (weighs one third of a pound) and relatively cheap (you can probably get one for about 100£) synthesizer with an X/Y pad instead of a keyboard. I bought mine in June last year and I've been in love with it ever since. smile
  •  Vom Vorton 1 month ago
Cheers! I put the piano through my new Behringer Time Machine pedal (Memory Man clone I think). It was kind of awkward to do without creating a massive feedback loop that would have destroyed us all. The pedal will definitely be back on any other songs I do this month though, because I LOVE it. How come we both only have one song? I bet you have loads of works in progress! I have nothing sad
  • Nick Portus 1 month ago
cheers dude - can't wait to hear what Elie makes of your tune!
  • Duke Meyer 1 month ago
Hi, you asked for the vocal effect in my li´l song "Brennt, brennt, brennt". It´s a "flanger" - built-in fx preset (of my recording pocket machine "Zoom H4n") to flange an e-git - I used it for the vocals just for fun to make it sound more strange.
  • mrgullible 1 month ago
yo, it was a bit too quick.......i should have spent some time on the songs ye know like......bit like a premature ej............
  •  Dan Wallbank 1 month ago

  •  The Cow Exchange 1 month ago
Thanks for calling me out! smile You're right, it lacks imagery. It actually is related to two things going on right now in cow-ville that I don't really care to explain, but I wanted to make it sort of generally-applicable for that reason. Even when using other people's words wink.
  •  oddbod 1 month ago
Thanks for the comment. no not real drums - EZ Drummer - the Cocktail Kit

I know dude - I've been hella busy! Got vocals done for #1 but still need to work on the arrangement, as it's still a little boring and shit.
  • pifie 1 month ago
It's been more like a song-quest to this day... I have internet sometimes, so it's all my fault I'm at zero still sad
  • tomj 1 month ago
Oh yes, I'm back and lazier than ever! Looking forward to your album!
  •  Tom DeSimone 1 month ago
Hey thanks for the comment on my song. I just uploaded the demo, so if you're curious to hear what the tune is like...

    Oh, and WATCHLISTED!
  •  Benjamin Nolan 1 month ago
Haha, no, I've just got nothing else to do in the evenings here. smile I tend to defer to the people I'm collaborating with, usually. Last year, I set up a Google Wave as a scratchpad for ideas for one track, which worked quite well. smile
  • philz 1 month ago
Now that's the way to do - listening to some of your tracks on Last.fm's about enough to make me wanna hang up my guitar for good! Nice one!!! P
  • paulh1237 1 month ago
A song will certainly be provided once I find the thing I'm recording it with. I have found the issue with having a tiny 4-track when your someone as forgetful as me.

And where would all your songs be Mr? Though I'm sure you can blame Elie..
  •  Benjamin Nolan 1 month ago
Hehe. big_smile Hurry up and post something! tongue I'm on a roll at the moment. smile

I'm gonna try! I'm starting to re-record a bunch of past Fawm/5090 stuff for a little double EP, but if I don't write new stuff while doing this I'll probably die so I won't stop! (I like your method of making fewer songs yet are more interesting, so I think I'll just do that this FAWM!) And I'm excited to hear what you come up with this time around!!
  •  Bruce H. McCosar 1 month ago
Space 1999 had an episode during it's first season called "The End of Eternity", where they had to face an immortal named Balor. The name came from Irish legend, one of a race of giants. Balor appeared as "Balahr" in Michael Moorcock's Chronicles of Corum. So in short, I'm some sort of trivia magnet big_smile
  • KATO NiNETAILS 1 month ago
Yes, I will be FAWMing this year for sure, as usual I will be counting on your mind numbingly awesome tracks for inspiration...so don't go and have a bunch of computer problems again!
  •  Bruce H. McCosar 1 month ago
Greetings! Thanks for the shout out in http://fawm.org/forums/thread/141/ . . . went to your user page here and found not only a reference to Saki, but also either to Space 1999 or the Fhoi Myore big_smile Pleased to make your acquaintance!
  •  Billy Sea 2 months ago
Welcome back to FAWM #2 smile It is #3 for me, but with those crazy 5090's added in, feels like I've been doing this forever. Yes, my goal is 100 songs. Figure that is a crazy goal, but ended up with 121 last FAWM so it almost looks like I'm slacking smile
In any case, it'll be a lot of fun and looking forward to hearing your songs!
  • oblivionpersonified 2 months ago
Cheers Howard! Quite daunted by all this but hey, it's only a bit of fun... that's what I need to keep telling myself, anyway.

Can't wait to hear what you come up with, you set the bar pretty high last year. Your Rival Schools homage was particularly memorable. It almost made up for the fact that they're taking so long with their new album!
  •  Helen 2 months ago
