Bio

3/13/2012: Feel free to listen but I do believe my active participation in FAWM 2012 has come to an end. I'll be poking my head in from time to time. Thanks everyone who made this a great year!

-----Now back to the usual commercial-----------------

Folk with Nerdy Swagger was the tag line I recently decided to hang on a shingle outside my door, though I think there are any number of folks round these parts that can outswagger me on the nerdiness front (this means you @Errol)

This is my fourth year 'round these parts. I run my own little project called The Song Bomb (www.thesongbomb.com) during February for which I write 28 songs each year. FAWM keeps me sane while I'm doing it and @Billysea reminds me that 28 songs ain't so many.

That said, The Song Bomb is raising money for the non-profit Guitars in the Classroom (www.guitarsintheclassroom.org) which instructs teachers how to play guitar and write songs so they can bring song based education into their classrooms. It's a great organization. Feel free to say 'hey' if you're interested in finding out more or helping them out. And if you happen to have some extra cash to toss in our fundraising pot (AFTER you've got your Rock Hands of course) we're happy to accept whatever you'd like to give.

I'm putting up this blurb in the USA Northeast Forum and putting it as a message to all the Boston area folks I know here. Hopefully, a good turnout.

Hey, Folks, come one and come all to the first ever and hopefully annual greater Boston area FAWM over party at Bloc 11 , 11 Bow Street, Union Square, Somerville this coming Sunday, March 25th at 6pm. If you have questions/comments, please leave a note for me at @mikegtz. Join @TimmyRiordan and @BethDeSombre and I there!
  •  mikegtz 2 months ago
Let's go with Bloc 11 at 6pm on Sunday 3/25. That is a nice place. I will spread the word.
  •  mikegtz 2 months ago
Tim, I just heard from BethDeSombre and if you could do Radio around 5:30-6:00 pm on Sunday,March 25th,this may be the time and place for our first ever FAWM overBoston area party. Let me know.
  •  chipwithrow 2 months ago
Just found out today about your Song Bomb project - man, that sounds cool! I'm a teacher (high school writing) and I've written tons of songs for kids. Every once in a while I play for my students, but most of my kids songs are aimed at a much younger audience.
  •  mikegtz 2 months ago
Tim ,it looks like Radio could work for the 18th around -5:30pm. I would have to drive since it is in Union Square but that would be ok. Does the open mike start at 7:30 pm.that night there? Sounds like it could be fun.
  •  helenseviltwin 2 months ago
    Thanks for the encouragement big_smile

I am going to post stuff. I've been waiting for people to do vocals for it. I have versions where it's just me singing and it's horribly confusing. Should have the first song posted tonight, though.
  •  mikegtz 2 months ago
Tim, what would you think of a FAWM over party at Club Passim for Boston area folks at 5pm on Sunday, March 18th? There is a show at 8pm that people may or may not want to attend but if we all meet at 5pm, we would have a chance to chat and meet and maybe go somewhere after that. Let me know and I will take the lead in organizing it.

It's all about the short story with him. Check out "The Aleph," and "Funes." Everything is pretty thought provoking, though. And gorgeously written too. If I didn't have to choose between spending my life studying south american literature (I also completely swoon for Jose Saramago's prose) and making enough money to eat, that's what I'd do with my life.
  •  joy212 3 months ago
I LOVE Borges! I know that's probably not a big surprise. I've always wanted to write a song inspired by his ideas. Hmm... I do need to finish at least four more...
  •  bethdesombre 3 months ago
Thanks for your comments on my stuff. I'm gonna try to make it to your March 4th show if possible; I have friends who have song-bombed with you (Vance Gilbert, Bethel Steele, Connor Garvey) and they told me to keep an eye out for you. Would love to participate in a future year.

You know, I'm getting bad at responding to people who comment on my song. Thanks Timmy Riooordan!

You do know there's a way to get past the 1000 characters, right? big_smile I'm assuming everyone knows that trick. big_smile
  •  joy212 3 months ago
It's up!! Thanks for the inspiration. smile

If we can only be reminded of places we have been, then why am I continually reminded of....oh, wait, never mind! big_smile
  • nadia 3 months ago
thanks for your comments on "catch up." i'm glad you enjoyed it! smile
  •  joy212 3 months ago
Sestina written... now I have to figure out music. I've got some ideas, but I'm gonna give them time to jell. It's up though if you're interested in reading it.
  • foxis 3 months ago
Hi Timmy. Well...sadly, that studio isn't mine. It belongs to Peter Gabriel (Real World Studios). I was just having some fun and have now confessed in the thread. smile Sorry! wink
Wow - you are more than on track! Have to give you a listen today. I hope to get a track up soon, it's been super hectic.
  • plainspoke 3 months ago
Thank you for listening and for your comment. Yes, it is rather introspective.
  •  toms 3 months ago
Salem State? Rats. I was aiming for Framingham State on a sunny July day in 1998. smile

Thank you for the kind comment!
  • gooseran 3 months ago
Dude, thanks for the kind reviews on my songs. I have a heck of a time getting people to listen to my stuff so it's always great to see new comments. To me, getting feedback from fellow musicians means a lot. Thanks again, Timmy!
  •  errol 3 months ago
Oh, but it was a CHALLENGE! But.. a challenge I could not complete. Ah well. big_smile Wow, we're up to 10 songs now.

    Well, you. Not we.
  •  errol 3 months ago
Wow, Timmy! THAT was pretty darn impressive.

Heck, I wouldn't be able to do that... I would have gotten as far as..

    Lo!

    And that's about it. big_smile

    Accolades!

(If you were hoping that I would respond in kind, I wouldn't have been able to ... that would be tooooo hard!)
  •  errol 3 months ago
YOU have a comment now. big_smile And it's LONG LONG LONG. big_smile
  •  max 3 months ago
Thanks for listening Timmy, much appreciated!
  •  duaneclancy 3 months ago
Hey man ... got my "Sestina" offering placed on the alter ... Riders Of Rohan (*24402)
That was a completely different style than anything I have ever done (took me a while too ... 2 hours!) But I did have to do some research on the style ... and recheck some things in the Tolkien books.
  •  toms 3 months ago
    Thank you, Timmy!
  • bennygee123 3 months ago
Thanks! I'm glad you like the song. Yeah I thought about that "hard" line when I was writing it. I hate to say that the innuendo was mostly intentional. In fact I almost egged it on with the word 'it' instead of the word 'life'. I tend to slip in as many culture references, innuendos, and puns as I can when I'm writing just to keep myself entertained.
  •  errol 3 months ago
Good grief... I was doing video comments, went to your profile... and there were no songs.

And now... you have 8. big_smile

So... which one shall I leave a comment on. It better be a good one. big_smile Although... maybe not one you really like... because I'll destroy it somehow... I just know it...

And yes, I am nerdier than you! *LAUGH*
  •  joy212 3 months ago
Thanks for the tips, I'll check out those sources for sure. Also, I do enjoy Neil Gaiman; I'm actually finishing up American Gods right now. It does not surprise me at all that he would write a sestina. I've been reading a few to kind of get the feel.... ambitious, but I think I'll try it!
  •  gslade 3 months ago
re: where be songs - Still lookin' for 'em
  •  joy212 3 months ago
Thanks, Timmy. smile I totally just googled what a sestina is, and I'm not gonna lie, I'm considering it.... might take me the whole month and be a little crazy, but I am considering it.
