Bio

I'm sort of a vagabond. American by birth, though I haven't lived there in a very long time. Mainly a drummer, but I took up the guitar (and more recently, bass) for writing songs. Born in L.A. grew up in North San Diego, left the U.S. in 1991. Went from jazz to punk to alt. rock to Latin jazz, back to alt. rock, and then realised that "alt. rock" pretty much covers whatever I want to do, so there we go.

I don't really know anything about Charlie Zaa. I just like his name.

I'm embarrassed in advance about the low quality of playing, singing and production on my FAWM posts, but by God I will post some songs! That's what it's all about, innit??

Thanks to those who helped show me how to make crap demos at home! Let's see what we can do, now, eh wot?

Man, sorry to hear of all hell breakin' loose. Ex-wives... i know about that. They can be a pain in the ass. See you again in 2011.
  •  themightygreegor 2 weeks ago
I am so sorry. On 31 January, all Hell broke loose in my life. My computer crashed and I STILL don't have audio. GF broke up with me over religious differences (???). The ex-wife decided that not only would she NOT give me a divorce, but still, she'd take the condo and car, anyway (they're HERS! I don't care!), and...my pencil broke. Yeah, I could get a new pencil, but come ON. So I dropped the FAWM ball. I hope no one hates me. I have lyrics for the Lotteria song, anyway. I'll post them tomorrow. But that's pretty much it for me and FAWM this year. I'm sorry. My label wants my next recording (a good one, not a crap demo) by 15 March, so there's that, too. This sucks ass, but I'll try again next year. It's just fucking weird how my entire world conspired against my first attempt...no, not even that...HOPE...at FAWM. I'll see y'all on the flip side, I hope.

Hey, I saw on one of the forums that you won NaNoWriMo. So, I had to come ask you what your username is on nano so maybe I can find you.
WHY are you in Indonesia? Just wondering...sounds interesting big_smile

Thank you fellow newbie! Sigh, yes, I get that a LOT apparently. I've never listened to their music, but I'm definitely adding them to my 'to-listen' music list now that you mention it...

Anyway, good luck to the both of us! big_smile

I should stop. Being such a presence here attracts attention, and now I prob. have a bunch of people watching me. AK! But it's nervous energy, and the GF is always travelling for work. Which will be a good thing for Feb, I reckon. I have nothing else to do. I accidentally wrote a song yesterday and shrieked and threw my guitar across the room! I laughed when someone else said that earlier on a thread, but that is TOTALLY possible! Accidentally write a song. Crap. Can't use that one now.

I am SO not going to cheat, even if it means I wind up with, like, three songs.

Yeah, Chomsky and Vonnegut rock, as does Howard Zinn. I gotta add him. And Jared Diamond. Whoops! Back to the profile...

you're quite the presence already, sir, so let me say a late "hail and well met!" i appreciate anyone who loves chomsky and vonnegut-- and admits to being a vagabond. now enough about deep thoughts-- the burning question in my mind is, do you have incredible street food where you are????
  •  MAX VANREMMERDEN 1 month ago

The spanish tune is very well done, thanks for sharing over on the "non representative" thread...

Hey thanks for the nice comment on 'View From Mulholland'. I was in LA last week, after a 6 year absence, and didn't get to visit Mulholland Drive, which inspired this song.

Just listened to your showcase track - I love the pop-punk vibe / particularly the piccolo snare sound and how it punches through, and ace punk power chords, and ace BGV's.

Kurt Vonnegut, Noam Chomsky, and your ex-wife. Now there's a song.

Intriguing to say the least. I can get behind that.
  •  Vom Vorton 1 month ago
Really enjoyed your 'showcase' song, reminded me of The Hold Steady. Love the harmonies in particular smile
  •  oddbod 1 month ago

I dig your "showcase" song on the thread...meditative message with a frantic delivery, sweet!

P.S. You can edit any post after you make it...you don't have to live with "hords" forever big_smile

Thanks so much for the compliment. I’m a big fan of earlier TMBG and the Meat Puppets as well. The tune is from my first FAWM in 2007 and one of those off-the-cuff one nighters. It was recorded on a Roland 1680 I’m resurrecting this FAWM as my computer DAW is driving me crazy. It’s been a few years, but as I remember I did the acoustic guitar first as the basis. Then adding some synth-strings and keyboard, and finishing with the vocal. I’ve never have used a click track and probably should learn to… but it seems to kill my inspiration when I try, also as "Bob Ross" would say I do like the "happy mistakes"

Thanks. I plan to post MP3s made with Audacity, but I'm a drummer, not a guitarist, and not much of a computer guy and I'm working on my own and and I can't sing that well and and and...The quality of the recordings and playing and singing IS GOING TO SUCK. I'm looking forward to seeing what I come up with, too. I'll post sucky demos though! All in the spirit of the thing! Maybe I'll even get better at home recording.

Jakarta? Dang, FAWM is creeping all over the world! Glad to have you aboard, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
