Bio

Born and raised in Denver, Thom Butler is a Colorado native seeking to bring something new to the Denver dance music scene. Interested in music and computing from an early age, he began to dabble in electronic music during his time at Lakewood High School after hearing Fatboy Slim’s “Rockafeller Skank” on the radio; the end results of his work sounded like rubbish. No need to sugar coat it. It wasn’t until he ended up in the Music Industry Studies: Technology program at the University of Colorado at Denver that he started learning music theory and, unsurprisingly, the end results started sounding less and less like rubbish. He was also introduced to a number of more advanced and sophisticated bits of software such as Propellerheads Reason and Digidesign ProTools, expanding his repertoire of sounds even further, becoming more learned in the fundamentals of audio synthesis.

Current plans involve working a full-time job teaching Middle School-aged Korean private school students English and cranking out three or four tracks a week. Crazy? Sure... but I can't speak the language and I've seen a bunch of stuff already, so I may as well spend a month as a shut-in.

OH... INSTRUMENTS.
----------------------------------
My main instrument of choice is Propellerheads Reason 4.0... but I hate the pre-set synth sounds, so I make my own. I've recently been swaying towards the evil clutches of Ableton Live, however. I also enjoy using random things around me as instruments, like the tambourine I drunkenly stole from the karaoke room and the sound of my neighbour barging into my apartment and firing a shotgun burst of BBs at me and, consequently, all over my apartment.

Life in Korea is interesting.

re: making your own synth patches... can you recommend any reading on how to get started? That kinda separates the wheat from the chaff in my book, and I've never really figured out how to get started down that road.

    Hey Thom,

I love it! Is it all improvised? Or do you work it out in midi? It sounds powerful! smile

Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the song. I like your electronic music so far. When the beat drops in Fighting Pt 3 it's pretty wicked.
  •  Dan Wallbank 1 month ago
Haha, thank you. Glad to know I'm getting it right, though the guitar and vocal mix still annoy me a bit.

Thanks for the compliment! I always feel worried about my production.

Hey.. thanks for the comment. I usually use Ableton for as much as I can. I do some recording of my guitar, bass and some percussion samples though.
I was hoping to use Renoise as well, but I'm waiting for the new version to come out and didn't make it in time for fawm sad
Hope Korea is treating you well, it definitely is one of my next destinations.
    Cheers!

Ahhhh....electronic wonderment in a sea of singer/songwriters. Pardon me while I pull up a chair...

Ableton is not evil, you are. I mean that in the best possible way.

    smile

And is it possible that the tambourine theft and the shotgun incident were (ahem) correlated?
  • Looking forward to hearing some interesting Reason sounds! I'm still married to the pre-sets... apathy on my end. smile

Good luck with this year's FAWM. We're almost in the same timezone. I'm in Thailand.
