Artist Bio

Influences:   whatever plants itself in the depths of my soul

This is #7 FAWM for me. (hi fawm friends - xo)
This year I've taken on several art challenges, one involving music. So we'll see how much writing I get done.

the backdrop on me:
I'm not a musician, and I don't sing. I'm an artist of paint and words...probably inspired by you. I tend to reach states of euphoria when exploring forests and chasing sunsets.

I've been absolutely humbled and amazed at what the musicians here on fawm have come up with when breathing life into my lyrics. I've somehow stumbled into the graces of some talented musicians since starting fawm, that have made amazing demos out of the abstract stories in my head. It has encouraged me to keep pushing the limits in my writing and in my creativity pursuits. Thank you for that know who you are.

USE OF MY LYRICS: if any of my lyrics resonate with you and you want to put them to music...please let me know - and come say hi. : ) If a demo is made, go ahead and post it and link me as the collab. If a demo has already been done by another musician, don't let that hold you back from doing your own.

As for making them available to the general public in any form..that's discussed on an individual it stays here on FAWM unless otherwise discussed. : )

Also.. I'm no writing expert by any means.. but I get sad if my work is heavily rearranged or changed, especially the meaning. I understand that in order to fit the technicalities of music.. sometimes changing is what's if something isn't working.. let me know - lets work it together.

Hello awesome Sue. You're very welcome. I hope you've had fun these past few weeks. Wishing you all the very best.

  • @danvaillancourt  Mar 17

Many thanks for all of the kind words! Congrats on 14. 😉

  • @majordanby  Mar 17

Thanks for taking time to listen and commenting on our songs. Raise Up You're Glass didn't really work in terms of the guitar sound and playing (it was initially a guide track). The lyrics are autobiographical as too is Pharmacy Queues. Despite everything that's been going on we have tried to avoid too much negative imagery, hence Sunshine Follows The Rain. After several Beatles comments I did try to write a straight up Beatles song and failed, it turned into Sunshine Everyday.

  • @msculli1  Mar 10

Thanks for the comment on Fine, much appreciated.

  • @driftwood1  Mar 7

  • @driftwood1  Mar 7

Absolutely, didn't mean to be ambiguous. I can't promise anything better than my usual lo fi recording, but I really like the concept. Let me know what if any imput you want lyrically.

  • @driftwood1  Mar 6

Wow, how can I refuse. No begging required.

  • @driftwood1  Mar 6

Now I totally need to write a song called Spontaneous Resonance. If only I knew a good lyricist...

  • @michaelbone Mar 6

its actually the baby not the cat! hahah thank you so much!

  • @alphanerg Mar 6

Yes "Alphane Reality Generator" is the band or artist name, whatever you want to call it, that I go by. As you guessed the name is a reference to a Philip K Dick book. It was too long for fawm when I made the account so I had to shorten it, although alpha energy is a good name too, i like that. Actually most of my song titles this year are direct references to PKD books. The "Killed by..." song are a reference to an oldschool video game called nethack, since they are done in video game style. Thanks again for all those awesome comments on my songs!

  • @caterwauler  Mar 5

Right now, I'm brainwashed, so I'll be back to comment on your lyrics when I can really appreciate them. (Today, I'm really useless, haha.)
Again, thank you so much for your kind comments. They are much appreciated. 😀

  • @caterwauler  Mar 5

Thank you so much for your kind words, nice to meet you! No worries about the long soundboard message, I tend to be wordy myself. 😁
Very interesting, what you said about your coded language, and the way your art and lyric are interconnected. That "release button" thing...
I'm sure a lot of others do the same thing as me ; I can't paint or draw, so I just make soundscapes.
Re listening to my songs first, then reading : FAWM is the only place where I add liner notes to my songs, and include stories. Otherwise, I let my listeners read whatever they like into my music. In fact, I enjoy that people can freely interpret my pieces (and that's one of the reasons why I never provide translations for my lyrics.)
Yes, you're right : I am not up for a post-FAWM collab. My fragile hearing has suffered a lot from a full month of intensive songwriting, and I really need to rest my ears. + I find it really difficult to put music to others' work... I hate to admit it, but I'm not good at this. :s

  • @heuristicsinc  Mar 5

Wow, that's a nice review. Thanks for the glowing compliments, and if you do get out the brushes for it, I'd definitely be interested in what results!

  • @driftwood1  Mar 4

Wow, thanks for linking to a bunch of my tunes on the forum. I'll have to write some happy ones as well next year.

  • @majordanby  Mar 4

    Thanks so much Sue(awesome)!
You've made my day with your comments on 'Ghost In You'. 😊

  • @pipewrench67  Mar 4

    By all means' go paint.

  • @yam655  Mar 4

Congratulations on hitting Century Club! 😀

  • @sapient  Mar 4

Ha, ha! I just saw your comment on "Seven Crowns"... No, there are no tricks as to how I do those vocals. It's all about the volume. I need to be warmed up, which takes a few nights of building up to it, but by the end of FAWM I can just belt it out 😀

  • @majordanby  Mar 4

Hi. Thanks for all your lovely comments and for listening in general. We had aimed to do 28 songs this year as there are two of us, unfortunately things conspired against us.

  • @johncrossman  Mar 4

It's a lovely bike and I would not give it away, with its dark purplish blue hue that spoke to me when I got it some years ago, but it is gathering dust. I can hear it quietly calling for a tune up. I'm listening.

    I fixed that typo again.

  • @triteformulas Mar 3

Thanks for your comment! I really enjoyed reading your lyrics. It's too bad I didn't come across your page earlier! I would have loved to try putting some of your words to music. Maybe next year 😁

  • @sapient  Mar 3

I checked. I am geeky enough to have all my FAWM stuff archived... and no, we didn't work together that year, but ]I did do a collab with your sister!

  • @sapient  Mar 3

You are right - that used to be me, and I changed it to just Sapient a few years ago cos it was easier to remember!
Thanks for listening to Devastating Beauty - glad it surprised you, in a nice way 😀 If you liked it, you might also like Mars, also by me and Gordon ( 😀

  • @johncrossman  Mar 3

Took out the extra "ess" before lyrics in the liner note.

  • @johncrossman  Mar 3

Videos exist, I forgot, including an "official" video. Full songs instead of clips, probably. Here's one:

  • @johncrossman  Mar 3

Yes, I know @jules. She even came through here on tour with @charlicheney and visited the Wisconsin peeps and performed. Powerful singer with a unique voice. Apparently gentle taunting does not induce people to return (Mr. Toledo? Calling Mr...).

  • @johncrossman  Mar 3

Well, it's really an anthem about standing strong... in the face of what happens to include weevils. Call it a parting shot.

  • @johncrossman  Mar 3

Then it's down to weevils and wind:

  • @johncrossman  Mar 3

I was consciously thinking about steam diluting/filtering the fire when I used that word, cuz I'm a nerd like that. Also a chronic editor.

edit: that's it, fire + rain = steam

Going to stop listening to my songs for a while and listen to songs like this instead:

  • @johncrossman  Mar 3

Yes, that part, thanks for your thoughtful thoughts. It's sort of a cliche to go up anyway, but I'll think about it. Also, more (and more) lower voice, got it. 😀
When one brings that much fire to the party...

  • @johncrossman  Mar 3

I have a literal question since you're fawm-listening if you'll entertain it... In the last chorus of that last song you commented on, wanting to go up and end sweetly, I hesitated and sort of swooped and it's not really a hesitating song. "When it's only ever..." Also "ho-om-om." Does it catch in any listener's ears but mine?

And thank you, I have a couple to go.

    typo? no typo. it's fixed.

  • @johncrossman  Mar 3

fixed a typo in the liner notes to that song...

  • @alphanerg Mar 2

    "do you sing??"

As little as possible. Last year about half my songs had lyrics, but i used a robot voice to "sing". In fawm of 2008 I did sing (or some approximation of singing). Both of those albums are on my bandcamp page:

But we can totally do a collaboration next fawm! I could use a robot voice to do the vocals or i could and just use a vocoder and a bunch of effects on my voice. (or we can find someone that wants to actually sing)

  • @alphanerg Mar 2

Thanks for all those nice comments!

I don't think it's weird, but don't take my word for it, i don't usually like writing lyrics so most of the time i don't even bother! (as you may have noticed) I think that when the lyrics come gushing out as you describe, you probably get your best stuff then. Those bursts of inspiration are the best (for any kind of writing)! Sitting and trying to force the inspiration can be tedious, but unfortunately necessary. (That's what most of FAWM turns into, for me at least).

I'm glad that you, your legs, and your bike are enjoying my faster stuff! I take it as a huge compliment that you use it to bike or work out. Thank you!

You used the term "digital amnesia" in one of your comments to me. That sounds like it would be an awesome song title. I might have to steal it.

  • @alphanerg Mar 2

It's good to have a theme for your album. Fire is a good theme, but stars and planets sound even better! Maybe that is just because i like sci-fi so much. Throw in some robots and time travel. 😉

  • @piney  Mar 2

Hey, thank you so much for all your wonderful words. It really warms my heart to see you have such a deep connection with my song. Music is my way of healing and I suppose with that, it resonates out and becomes a source of healing for others. That is so amazing. 😀

  • @johncrossman  Mar 2

Do you know my friend, @Leslie? She didn't stick around long this year but this song is chock full of mood + moxie:

  • @aprilm Mar 2

Thanks for listening to Hooked on You. I have such a special man in my life, who unfortunately doesn't play any instruments but can sing! I will get busy listening to songs as soon as I have a chance and I want to check out more of yours when I do. Gotta love the amazing connections we make here once a year. Look me up on Facebook if you're on there. April Ann McGinnis

  • @johncrossman  Mar 2

Thanks for the recommendation. No worries, hyperbole. It's like running across a professional when you're just learning. That's ok, that's how it should be. You understand. 😀 It's good to be blown away.

Another favorite perennial pro with super production I like is @joekennedy. He keeps it low key but writes 70s inflected happy pop songs about dark love stories. That's what I hear anyway. Baby in Blue is a good representation.

  • @johncrossman  Mar 2

I recognize the pic but I haven't listened. Broken Carousel makes me want to quit music, so I have to get over myself a little bit and just enjoy the best song I've heard anywhere this year. Ugh. I mean, great. Inhale, exhale, listen again.

  • @quork  Mar 1

Beautiful words and photographs, Sue. I'm glad I ran into you on here.

  • @johncrossman  Mar 1

Thanks an awful lot for your too too kind comments. Too kind. We're not known for our graciousness in the face of compliments, but I appreciate it all and we're working on it. 😀

Seems like you got a late start but once you jumped in, you jumped with both feet, eyes open, water wings rumpled and deflated in the trunk. Cannonball! Seriously, how does fawm make it so safe to do that?!?! Ah never mind, it's a lovely mystery that we're ok leaving as is. Well, I have an inkling...

Anyway, too bad our collaborating days are over, but it ended on a high note. To much pressure, the bar's too high now. I would apologize for that too but I'm only 50% culpable. I kid, there's always next year. Jump in! 😉

  • @metalfoot  Mar 1

Thanks for your kind words about Northern Lights. The song came together better than I could have dreamed. Glad you liked it!

  • @driftwood1  Mar 1

Also I'm sorry I wasn't able to do one of yours. I hoped to squeeze it in but there just wasn't an opportunity. I'll also admit that after hearing @johncrossman 's amazing rendition I'm a bit intimidated to try.

  • @driftwood1  Mar 1

Pretty horrifying story isn't it. I wish I had time to do it justice, but I liked the idea for the song and needed to play something after a few days without. The guitar solos have been short for the same reason, lack of time. They've all been 1 or 2 takes, so The shorter they are the less chance I can screw up. Usually I'll go on forever and need to reigned in.

  • @pitt Mar 1

    Congratulations on reaching 14!!!!

  • @andygetch  Mar 1

yes pretty crazy, this picture of a PA Highway 61 that Dylan couldn't have imagined

  • @andygetch  Mar 1

the story of the town evacuation in Centralia from the coal mine fire 😀

  • @andygetch  Mar 1

Hi Sue, wow, 6 years in I am still discovering the depth of talent here. Glad to have finally found your writings and photography 😀

  • @johncrossman  Mar 1

Oh no, it broke you! Take a break, hydrate... 😊

  • @johncrossman  Mar 1

Of course, sorry about that, mum's the word.🙊

  • @johncrossman  Feb 28

Aw shucks, 'twerent nuthin much, just a little time and songing. Just plug in the link on the page, come back next year for more, keep on keepin' on and we'll call it even. 😀

  • @johncrossman  Feb 28

Well, here's a recording with my apologies in advance for changes, mostly to fit the lines, a couple to fit the format which I decided might be V, V, pre-Chorus, Ch, V, Pre-Ch, Ch, Bridge, Ch. Now when I type that out, I know why it's a little too long at 4:21. Felt like it should end with a chorus, so I pulled in pieces that seemed to fit. If it's too somber, too slow, if those were the wrong words to change, if it's too too too... let me know. I'm open to a different recording, and could do that after fawm ends in 12 hours or so.

Here it is in a live kind of one-take living room recording (with a few hiccups, figuratively speaking),and without all those pesky harmonies I like to hide behind:

  • @alphanerg Feb 28

Hey, yes all of my tracks are downloadable, and a decent amount of them are high energy that you might use to bike/exercise/whatever. These are supposed to be smiles not squares right? I don't know why it shows up like this for me:

  • @alphanerg Feb 28

Thanks for that comment on "Confessions of a Crap Industrial Artist", glad it was able to conjure up some kind of video in your head to go with it. Seems pretty similar to what i was going for. 😀

  • @alphanerg Feb 28

Thanks for the comment on "Killed by a System Shock" I think you are right, that first synth might come in a little too high and chirpy, i will adjust that.

  • @crisp1  Feb 28

Thanks for the kind words about All the Dark Distance! Does Jacob have a brother who also sings?

  • @johncrossman  Feb 28

On an unrelated note to anything else, it's a quirk of the fawm site that notes on your soundboard or song page don't show up on the other person's feed. So if you reply, they may not see it. Notes on someone else's soundboard, their songs and forums do pop up. Weird but that's the system.

I get the impression that you're out to win fawm in the next... 31 hours I think. It's yours for the taking, so go get it! If you want to and have time and so forth... 😀

  • @keithbarrette  Feb 28

Thanks for the kind comments! I must admit I have a certain love for dramatic sustained vocals 😀

  • @ihelen  Feb 27

Thank you for commenting on my Lantern song - the imagery you conjured of lanterns and flowers sounds very nice!

  • @spinhead  Feb 27

Oh, thank you thank you for the comment on "Water Over Stone."

  • @acousticmaddie  Feb 27

    Thanks for commeting !

  • @driftwood1  Feb 27

You found my "professional" tunes. Glad you liked them. Driftwood was our original band name but we ran into some booking confusion as another group was active with the name. I'm Neil.

  • @jamesstaubes  Feb 27

Hey! Thanks for listening and commenting on "Dating Is So Much Fun." Well the song is totally sarcastic. It's hard to write a sad song with a ukulele! LOL! 😀

  • @jibbidy34  Feb 26

Hey @sueawesome thanks so much for listening to Dragons and Almost Home!

  • @adforperu  Feb 26

Thank you very much for your nice message and comments. And it's my pleasure.. I will be commenting on them soon I promise, but they're all great 😀 And anyone that @iwilleatyou is a fan of is a recommendation in itself!

  • @driftwood1  Feb 26

Wow, thank you for all the amazing kind words, I definitely don't consider it litter, and I'd love to work on a song together. I broke my leg last week so I am literally limping to the finish line this year. Otherwise I would try to put something together immediately. Worst case, I flagged your page and lets definitely put something together next Fawm.

  • @pitt Feb 23

    My volume knob fell off.

  • @iwilleatyou Feb 21

By the way, this was REALLY fun! Love your lyrics!

  • @iwilleatyou Feb 21

Sue I hope you like my interpretation of Chemical Carousel. I just now noticed you updated it but I had already worked on this all day Sunday.
It's one interpretation of your great lyrics so perhaps someone else can also do a version of the updated lyrics.

  • @iwilleatyou Feb 19

I'm going to go for it. I'll give Chemical a shot. I am seeing you have a new title up "Blood Instead of Lips" and i absolutely love that title. That's super catchy. OK...time to get conjuring. I've got all day to do it.
Heads up I have no internet at home (I'm at a cafe) so I wont be able to respond for the rest of the day.

    Re: Root Working:
Root working is where you take any questions you have, could be ANYTHING, any wonderment, and you go "down down down the rabbit's hole" so to speak until you find some sort of answer(s) that satiates the wonderment. Nothing is taken for granted. One could star at a leaf and ask, why is it shaped the way it is vs. another leaf? For some it may seem frivolous but you would be amazed what Mother Nature has to say with such observations. It's not science and it's not religion because it's not another human telling you things through it's own eyes. It's YOU listening and observing with the possibility of no restriction (should you allow it.

  • @iwilleatyou Feb 19

@sueawesome-"I will also say it's so interesting to go back and read and re-read. I always feel like there's a message in there for me"

Just to quote what you posted on my soundboard, I get the very same from your lyrics. That there's a message in there should one choose to interpret or root work it. I love root working. It's the "question authority" approach but towards Mother Nature who is there to listen (and she gives hints too. Subtle hints).

  • @iwilleatyou Feb 19

Hola! I can post up a direct download link to Carbon, just give me a few days while I work on more music.
Chemical Carousel: The lyrics definitely speak to me and I can do my best to see what magic can be conjured however as far as layers and layers....I'm on a laptop and it would explode if i put too many tracks. Believe me I tried in the past. If you still want me to see what I can come up with, I'll work on it. Do you mind if i rearrange the lyrics a bit if need be? What I mean is keep everything as is but just move around so that maybe I start with the bottom lyrics and work my way up or what have you...basically have some fun to see what gets conjured.

  • @iwilleatyou Feb 18

What the........Where on EARTH (or Jupiter) have you been?????

  • @stevenwesleyguiles  Feb 18

Thanks for your kind words on my song! So, you've been FAWMing for awhile now! 😀

Awesome! Love the lyrics for "I remember you". Great images you put together! Painter of words you are. 😀

  • @pitt Feb 2017

    Happy V-day!
