  • @owl  4 weeks

    Thanks for all the comments!

  • @tseaver  4 weeks

Thanks for the comment on "End of the Line". Re instruments: bass and guitars are live; the drums are hand sequenced, and the B3 is from the "setBFree" virtual instrument.

  • @gslade 4 weeks

Sorry to hear you're a guitar wanker. I'm probably that too. We should get together and wank some guitars. I think that's socially acceptable.

  • @quork  4 weeks

Thank you for your great comments. I’m not sure how I’ve missed listening to your song. I’ll rectify that.

  • @scottlake  5 weeks

Have you watched/listened to this SM 57 with an SM81 windscreen side by side compared to SM-7B? https://youtu.be/E14ujrt5bQQ

  • @sync  5 weeks

Hey Steven, Sorry to discover the rest of your stuff so late. You've got some great songs here! Oh well, I've got 10.5 months to check 'em out now... To answer your question about the drums on Psychic Enemy, @airbagtester sent me a stereo mix with no click. I'm not one of those metronome drummers, so it was a challenge to get it synched up. I've been accused a time or two of freight training. Grr... Anyway, I basically just played it many times, simpler and simpler until I had a buncha steady tracks to choose from. The fill around the rack toms at the end I had to time stretch because I rushed it a bit. I was amazed that it actually worked without a bunch of artifacts. I LOVE Cubase!

  • @zecoop  5 weeks

really appreciated the super nice comments and you taking the time to check out those songs. For Surf Chase, I recorded the intro single note on the Hammond first, recorded electric guitars second, then recorded the rest of the Hammond. Finished up with drums and bass. Doing things solo means recording 'backwards' quite often, although I have 'written' songs on drums a number of times, which is fun. 😀

  • @sueawesome 5 weeks

you are SO awesome!!! that was such a blast (so sorry I was late coming in)

  • @cynthiawolff  5 weeks

Thank you so sorry...just feeling under the weather
    have fun you guys...

  • @cynthiawolff  5 weeks

There is a possibility that I won’t be able to make the party tonight..
    Sorry!!!

  • @zecoop  6 weeks

I appreciated your humor... Just wanted you to know. 😀

  • @jmadison  7 weeks

Hey, thanks for listening to "Can't Stand to Slow Down". After hearing your music, I -really- appreciate your comments. Thanks!

  • @mkd  7 weeks

Thanks so much for your comment on Brotherly Love! Yes, it’s a harp over the top of a uke. Don’t think I have the uke-skills to make notes like that ring out in that way. I do love how well the two fit together sound-wise though, that was something I hadn’t been expecting!

  • @renegadepriest 7 weeks

Thanks for the kudos! For now, it will remain acapella, but I would love to have someone add music if their heart so desires. 🤘

  • @coolparadiso  7 weeks

thx for your comments. we discussed the sound on the Mac mic and decided for this performance it leave it as it gave it a bit of a haunting feel.

just to say bud if you post our song anywhere could you credit me as, Tony Mcglinchey it's how i promote my work, thanks bud

  • @mmmmarcus  8 weeks

Thank you very much for the nice words on my collab with @benjo, glad you liked the track!

  • @expendablefriend  Feb 19

Hi Steven, just wanted to update you, collab-wise...unfortunately I'm bowing out for the month in terms of writing (except for one song where I've already recorded the backing track and am just waiting to receive some vocals to mix in). Real life has caught up with me and I need to focus on stuff outside of FAWM. Sorry to disappoint. Let's definitely do something together next time?

  • @philhenry Feb 19

Yes, real trumpet! Thanks for listening and commenting!

  • @standup  Feb 18

Thanks for listening to Freedonia. The amp is a Fender Princeton I got last year, the greatest amp EVER. Maybe. Distorted parts were through a Vox AC4. Both were miked with a Sony C38 microphone.

  • @standup  Feb 18

If you sent me a couple of stems that would be perfect! I need the drums though, can’t do drums for a couple weeks probably.

  • @standup  Feb 18

The space is dry and I have 1-2 tracks at a time capability. There will be contractors doing stuff in the coming weeks, so I won’t be able to track drums for a while, or a whole band. But I’m back to functional status.

So any time now I could add bass, backing vocals, or whatever.

  • @standup  Feb 18

Thanks! I’m rather excited about this one.

  • @fiddlerblick80 Feb 18

Hey thanks so much for your words on Monuments! I’m so glad you liked it...it was a late night rush to figure it out before bed. I so dig “Eleanor”...the inspirational kid behind it will love it!

  • @standup  Feb 16

Hey, I finished up a lyric if you still feel like doing a collab and have time. I think it's kind of a Courtney Barnett self-deprecating thing. If you're a fan of her work you probably know what I mean.

Can I send you the lyric?

  • @scottlake  Feb 15

FWIW I just posted my song with those drums

  • @jibbidy34  Feb 14

Congratulations Centurion Soldier! You wrote 100 comments for your fellow FAWMers!! You made this place even better. You took your time to listen to other people's songs and you have 100 thank you's from all of them and from me! Here’s your badge. Excellent work and keep busting’ those zongs!!

  • @cowex  Feb 13

BTW, regarding the Moon vocals, you might want to check out VocalSynth by izotope. I think there's an N-day trial period, else it will will probably go on sale again for $99 in the next year. Anyhow, I used that for the glitched vocals and harmonies. I'm in love with the effect sounds like a Speak-and-Math. It's a fun robot sound, and it cuts through the mix well too.

  • @joetime Feb 13

Thanks for stopping by my page and doing some listening! I’ve got some listening to do... you’ve been busy 😀

  • @cowex  Feb 13

BTW - Sorry, I don't have a blog or anything. I don't think my outcomes are consistent enough to warrant that 😁, but I'm getting a little more stable this year. In general, if you watched me, I'd be staring at some plug-in saying "WHY WON'T YOU DO WHAT I WANT?". It gets old. 😀

  • @cowex  Feb 13

Holy pants, thanks for all the listens and comments! I'm happy to try some funky bass. Keep in mind, it's keyboard bass, but I'm happy to try as long as it's at a relatively steady tempo (quantization and I are best friends). Just email me the mix or whatever you want me to add to and I'll give it a shot!

  • @captainvulpine  Feb 13

Hahaaa! When we were recording it I said "Guiles is gonna hate this." I was hoping you'd avoid that one. But yes, from what I understand there is a protagonist, and he does believe he is helping. I have received a stern talking to from my extremely disappointed sister who doesn't understand why I "have to make everything ugly". The plan is to write some actual lyrics for it as to not waste the melody =p. In the meantime, the song I'm finishing up now will atone for my sins thus far. Nice and easy, nice and pretty.

  • @radioovermoscow Feb 12

PS. My setup this year has generally been deliberately basic. The bass on most tracks is Modo Bass - a really lightweight bass guitar emulator (the advantages being it's always perfectly in tune, unlike my actual bass guitar, and the midi notation means when I come back to the song months or years later, the instructions on how to play it are right there!)

The guitar is Line 6's Helix plugin - Les Paul copy, with the left channel using the bridge pickups, the right channel using the neck. The drums are a mix of Drumforge and SSD.

There's a bit of compression, tape emulation, etc on the master.

I think it sounds pretty polished 'cause I based the template off a batch of 'proper' recordings I was doing 😀

  • @radioovermoscow Feb 12

Thanks! And it's not a quick process for a quadruple album... I've tried doing versions of it before, when it was a double... the first attempt was a decade ago! But I've expanded the plot since then, and my production skills have vastly improved, so it's about time I gave it another go.

  • @lhcisco  Feb 12

Thanks for stoppin' by man! The 8-bit VST's i used is Peach and Toad by Tweakbench. Peach is the music and Toad does the percussion and sounds effects. I found it free somewhere's. The verb comes from CLA Vocal thing. It's a nice one stop tool box.

  • @burrsettles  Feb 12

since inquiring minds want to know: the bass on "meditation" is actually just my jazzmaster through a digitech whammy on octave drop. i picked up the whammy before FAWM this year (the other guitarist in delicious pastries has one) and it's been fun figuring out how to use it...

  • @negasi Feb 12

Hi! Looks like you're having a super productive FAWM output! I am so glad you still have that! I actually was looking at the old photos just this week and wondering about that so thank you for alleviating my wonders! 😁 hopefully sometime I'll be able to attend one!

  • @smiley Feb 11

Thanks for commenting on, "Guilty". I do play the instruments myself (it is probably apparent) except for that drum machine I play through my mini Vox amp. Thanks for inquiring.

  • @unpronounceable  Feb 11

You're the best. In "Maple Bacon Donut", I used logic's electric piano thingy, one of the MKII's, and upped the treble and tone to make it crazy sappy sweet! Can't wait to get a chance to listen to your double-FAWM album here! 😀

  • @ajna1960  Feb 10

Jenn Foss is very good at that I think 😀 I'll chat to her 😀

  • @expendablefriend  Feb 10

Anything is good with me - I've done all of those! No set way of working.

  • @captainvulpine  Feb 10

My sister sings the Panda Puffs song every morning while she's getting ready for work and I'm entirely certain she has no idea she's doing it.

  • @musicbykatie Feb 10

You know you'll just always be apple head to me ❤

  • @frey Feb 9

Hi, I only just now saw your comment on my song! I usually make them up on the spot.. I usually start with a single line and just go from there & keep writing.

  • @charliecheney  Feb 9

Okay, emailed a lyric just now. Ignore the attached recording if you like, that's totally fine, it's just a vocal reminder I sang into my phone to remember the melody I had when I was writing it, but not required or anything.

  • @spinhead  Feb 9

And "Yesterday's Moon." Wow. Someone besides my daughter listening to my music in the car. Woohoo.

  • @spinhead  Feb 9

Appreciate the comment on "We Are Water." Definite leanings, that one.

  • @benjo  Feb 9

    hey Steven
just spent some time listening to
White lightening and i cant get over your voice man you really got a gift there just had to say that anything of mine you'd like to collab on you're more than welcome if you need lyrics just ask bud Thanks again Steven i'm honoured

  • @expendablefriend  Feb 9

Heya Steven! I would love to collab with you. I'm aware that I have 6 collabs stacked up already that I've agreed to, though....can we see how it goes - maybe a little later in the month? I'm back to work on Monday, so my FAWMing time will soon be decimated...

  • @benjo  Feb 9

Hey Steven oh man i cant thank you enough i just swtched on to find this
what a great job you did here
love everthing about this you painted the picture and adding the oooohs just works so well really Steven stunning thank you so much great vocal and music cheers bud

  • @charliecheney  Feb 9

I'm on strict vocal rest this year, but I'll writevand add instruments if you like. I'm available this weekend. All next week too really.

  • @jacobeverettwallace  Feb 8

Did you get a google doc set up for our potential collab? 😀

  • @johncrossman  Feb 8

You poked me before we started about music or lyrics.. I get a little worried about the flow before it starts so I hesitated. Like maybe it won't flow! But it'll be fine. Man, that's never your issue, wonderful.

I'll see if I can't shoot you some lyrics this time. You've got a lot on your plate, so no prob either way, but seems like you might be tearing through it. 😀 What's the musical equivalent of nom nom...

  • @caseewilson  Feb 7

Do it. Thank you for being so thoughtful about the impact on me, but honestly. I'm so touched you want to - so go for it 😀

  • @bru2 Feb 7

You know the M in FAWM is for month right? 😂😂😂

15 songs already you are a Machine!!!

  • @timothybracken Feb 7

thank you again for all the kind words! I need to listen to your stuff now. WOW you have a ton of songs!

  • @caseewilson  Feb 7

I did, and I had a brief chance to listen to it last night, but basically I'm out of action until I get my mac back, which will hopefully be tomorrow evening. What I heard was lovely though - thank you!
Were you thinking of posting it as a collab?

  • @scottlake  Feb 7

    Yes 90 BPM exactly

  • @julesbf Feb 7

Thank you for your kind comments and congrats on the win already.

  • @steffan  Feb 6

Sweet! I'll check out your album soon! I'd love to collab... but I've been in my studio exactly ONCE all month (the first) 'cause it's Mardi Gras season down here... If you have a little seed of something you'd like me to play with - that'd be awesome. Otherwise, it's going to be until the 15th or so that I'm actually actively FAWMING, I think.

  • @dreamscuba  Feb 6

    Congratulations on reaching the goal.!
Just listening to your latest album...first song "Disenchanted". Wow. It's pretty damn cool!

  • @pambowen1 Feb 5

Thanks, Steven, I took care of the firstfruits song. I wasn't here last year and I've forgotten the drill. I appreciate the help.

  • @tgbanned Feb 5

Thank you Master FAWM-da! 😂 Dang man! 12 songs alreqdy?? You're a MACHINE! Dig the stuff!

  • @pambowen1 Feb 5

Klaus told me about the first fruits thread, and I think my first song "Pinhole through the Veil" would qualify. How do I add it to the thread? Not a techie. Pam

  • @airbagtester  Feb 4

Hey thanks for listening to my song! I forgot to add some notes about the gear stuff which you asked about: Guitar is a tele through a Tech21 Flyrig5 DI. The bass is a Peavey P bass through another Tech21 Bass DI with no effects. The fuzz near the end is a cool MXR Variac fuzz I got recently that can adjust the voltage from 5v to 12v.

Most of my guitar and bass is through Tech21 DI's, except my first song which I used a strat and this cool little Japanese solid state amp for guitars:

  • @xfloorpunchx Feb 4

    Are you human ? 😁

  • @sunnymae  Feb 4

Seriously? Your output is ridiculous Dude. Kudos to you you're on a roll. Thanks so much for dropping by and leaving your your feedback on" this ship has sailed". That chord I hit has a second in which adds beautiful dissonance and is very warm. Thanks for noticing!
Cheers and keep keep having have a great time!

  • @writeandwrong  Feb 4

That's awesome!! It's always great to find people you can collab with like that!! Kudos to both of you!

  • @soulbird Feb 4

yeah, thanks for the skirmish idea. it proved I can write a song to a deadline but I'm still struggling to write any of the songs I hoped I'd write

  • @metalfoot  Feb 4

Here I thought I was prolific and you're already double digits! 😉

(I will be double digits before Sunday's through, mind you)

  • @caseewilson  Feb 4

Hi, yes, sure, that would be lovely! casee.wilson@gmail.com if it'll go or use something like wetransfer, or send me a link... Thank you! That was an unexpected surprise 😁

  • @robynmackenzie  Feb 4

    Ello, guv'nah!!!

  • @famouspatrick  Feb 3

Thanks, for the kind words on my skirmish song, "The Face." I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  • @natrin Feb 3

Thanks 😀 The face song has main vocals doubled + some automated harmonies from a TC Helicon Voicelive touch. Robot choir.

  • @idonotlikepeas Feb 3

Very much appreciate the compliment on my song. Being mistaken for a potential VGM author is one of the more flattering things that's ever happened to me. 😀

  • @brrrse  Feb 3

I want to get a wardrobe that says "Ask me about my autoharp!!" My autoharp is an Oscar Schmidt 21 chord autoharp. A have a friend who is a luthier who remapped the buttons/chords for me to give me a more folk/blues setup - this is commonly done - there are as many button set-ups as there are people playing autoharp - its where we want the patterns to run. Mine's kinda circle of 5ths - so middle finger on I, 5 is always ring and 4 is always index. Relative minors are down and 7ths are up.

The lineup of my keys, from top to bottom is:

    Eb F7 C7 G7 D7 A7 E7
    Bb F C G D A E
Gm Dm Am Em Bm F#m B7

I use it primarily as a rhythm instrument because I'm lazy - but the technique I'm working on is chording every note, then plucking at the strings - I'm stretching it further into negative harmonies and such to get a more accurate melodic sound - It's just like an old electric chord organ. And it tunes just as poorly. Character limits:grumbles I went on to say that I think you should try and find one and start noodling around. I think you'd find some joy in it - and it is the ultimate teaching accessory - and studier than a guitar. I thank mine for the two crowns on my front teeth LOL

  • @reklov Feb 3

    Hi Steven!
    Thanks for your skirmish comment.
This is just a normal egg slicer. It looks a bit like a small harp and can be played the same way. The strings are "tuned" accidentally, so I had to use the five strings that worked out best. There was no bending or technical treatment besides some noise reduction.

  • @adessell Feb 3

    Wow. Go steve!!

  • @racmusic101 Feb 2

@stevenwesleyguiles well, you're just all that and a bag of chips!

Thanks for the love on my tune!

  • @stnada Feb 2

HAHAHAHA of course you're already 5 deep, buddy. Looking forward to listening to all 27 that live come tomorrow AM. You're a beast!

  • @dutch1967 Feb 2

Thanks for your most kind comment to Country Singing Man, SWG! I think I'll re-record in March, just to iron out the shakes in the rhymin' and the crunches in the pickin'.

  • @krayzie003  Feb 2

Thanks for your comment on "Down To The Ocean." Yes the ukulele was a BIAB RealTrack. First time I've used one of their uke tracks and was pleasantly surprised. I was ready to break out my ukulele but no need.

  • @fearlessflight2014  Feb 2

Thanks for stopping by my first fruit. I'll let you know when I've posted the demo. The guitar piece it was written for is super lovely.

  • @johnstaples  Feb 1

Steven, what I love most about your Stay With Me performance and production is you managed to make something really fresh and modern sounding! I struggle with that! I went from crappy production of 70s/80s sounding songs to better production of 70s/80s songs. Now I wanna produce something that can rival Sia's Chandelier or Pink's What About Us or Lorde's Royals! I am basically a 14-year-old girl again and dammit I wanna make music for me! 😁

  • @majordanby  Feb 1

Thanks man. Funny you should ask, I wrote the lyrics and had a tune in my head and then worked out the chords later. I very rarely write this way...

  • @steffan  Feb 1

Yo thanks! That bridge part is literally just me singing the same thing three times.. One left, one middle, one right - and all sent to the same plate reverb. I think the chorusy effect is enhanced by the fact that I can't hold a pitch to save my life!

  • @hmorg Feb 1

Thanks for the comment! I actually did a Stranger Things inspired piece back in 2016 (as part of my unsuccesful 50/90 effort that year). It's on my soundcloud and it's called Perkeltron.

  • @sw1n3flu  Feb 1

Yessir hoodie to harness the power of FAWM

  • @dutch1967 Feb 1

Don't mean to rush you or anything... but there's people waiting on that Stay With Me song... 😉

  • @inciteful  Feb 1

    Woo hoo! Welcome back

  • @mleverette  Feb 1

    YEEEEEEESSS!!

  • @nancyrost  Feb 1

Hey, you too, SWG! Excited for this FAWM!

  • @cynthiawolff  Feb 1

    Hey fellow Southern Californian!
always a pleasure and delight to hear your music.

  • @ajna1960  Feb 1

Heya Mr Gee 😀 Happy FAWMing !
Please maybe add me to your FAWM collab list !
Also add Future Kings Of Denamrk to your band list for 2018 !!!
    xx

  • @ampersandman  Jan 31

Thanks for your kind words and for listening to my Soundcloud. I admit that I've listened to these bands a lot in my youth, so a certain influence might be noticeable. 😉 Cheers and have a happy FAWM!

  • @alboe Jan 31

Tomorrow's the big day, I hope you'll have a great FAWM.
