Bio

Roy de Smet started his musical carreer at the PX Songwriters Guild in Volendam, january 2010, playing two covers then. Two months later, as he performed for the second time, he played his first original song.
Since then, he has written about 40 songs and performs on average twice a month.

After his first entry at FAWM in 2011, he got the hang of it and decided to participate again in the 2012 edition. (He nearly decided not to, but when you've FAWMed once, it's a real addiction!)

Roy de Smet is planning on releasing an EP due 2012.
His music is being greatly influenced by music of the '60s and '70s and music from today's indie/folk scene. Furthermore he is influenced by everything he sees and hears.

I'm not hanging out that much. Main reason is that I'm really busy (working during daytime, studying and caring for the children in the evening). But I will try to be more active in the coming days. Will you go to the Jetlounge soon?

Thank you for your nice comments!

I love Hammock's music, thanks for the great compliment!

Hi Roy! Thanks for the comments on my songs. The reason that you may not have heard so much of a Beatles influence on Travelling Light is because I only contributed the lyrics to that song. Bong saw my words and asked if he could use them. I did upload another version of Travelling Light, with completely different music... more in the pop ballad style at *27486

Oh, and you're famous! I saw a song named after you on here! big_smile

Re your question about the mic: Get yourself a tiny multi-port USB hub, and you should be good to go. I got a small black 4-hub Sitecom at Dixons. Very handy and also inexpensive.

Roy, apropos your comments on the 'next year' thread: For streaming directly, Fileden or Dropbox are good, and they're free. As for a good mic, I have the AudioTech (AT2020 USB). It was recommended to me by a first-class composer/vocalist, and it's tremendous (even though my vocals themselves are pretty wimpy tongue ). It's also very inexpensive.

Re: Israel's Praise - Yeah thanks Roy - I agree, it's challenging and I think a lot of Christian's might struggle to sing it, but then I think we'd struggle to sing Psalm 22 which is what the song is based on. There's a real sense of abandonment in it, that many would find uncomfortable - unless that's how you feel, then there's some comfort in the knowledge that God might know what you're going through.

I appreciate your honest and thoughtful feedback

Thanks Roy. I think that is what the teen was going for, but to be honest he's a little off the wall, so I don't know exactly what he's talking about! And I think Bowie and Velvet Underground are his main influences

"You're a Warhol now - so die like one"

Don't know what was up with that link but I've fixed it now - though it takes a few seconds to load

  •  max 3 months ago
    wink
  • wander 3 months ago
I like the song a lot Roy, it's definitely one of your best. Great piano and melodically very good to. In order to make it even better, you have to re-record it like you said you wanted to. You can sing better and you know it. smile
  •  degausser 3 months ago
No problem.. Now you've said that, it is glaringly obvious what it is about! smile Having said that, not knowing what a song is about isn't a negative things as such to me anyway.
  • wander 3 months ago
Ah you got some new songs. Very late for me now and dog tired, will listen tomorrow. Thanks for your comments, I like that you´re straightforward. Think you know that I know my limitations, my lyrics and songs can be good but my singing and guitar really don´t cut it yet. Will try to focus on that after FAWM. It's a lot of songs we have to write, don't you think? Hard work...
  • wander 3 months ago
Ok I´ll hear from you if you got the chance to drop by. I´m thinking of going too the 28th.
  • wander 3 months ago
Can´t wait for all these mysterious songs! If youre in amsterdam the coming weeks and you feel like popping by and making a collabo, i´m up for it.

greetings, your biggest and truest fan
  • roydesmet 3 months ago
Update. I've got some lyrics (near-)ready.
For one of them, I can hear the music in my head but it's piano that I hear, so I need to talk that through with someone who knows how to play the piano.
The other songs. I believe it's 2 or 3 still need music.

And then there's a song that is finished. I only need to record the vocals, but my vocals aren't working well nowadays (But I had a great party last night!)
  • wander 3 months ago
I´m one song ahead of you now! smile
  • wander 3 months ago
Ha, I knew you had something with concept albums when I read all your posts today...
Your ideas do amuse me a lot, keep on rockin'!
  • wander 3 months ago
Roy, you sound like you're going to create a conceptual masterpiece. Is it going to sound like The Wall? Quadrophenia? Or more like Sgt. Peppers? Just don't lose your mind in the process and burn down your tapes like Brian Wilson when he tried to record Smile... wink

But seriously, I admire your ambitions and you letting your ideas run wild. The Gods of FAWM must be proud...
  • wander 3 months ago

  • wander 3 months ago
I'll get you! And I can learn from your guitar playing...
