Bio

Hello - OneToMany here, aka Ron to my friends smile

This is my fourth go at FAWM - All of which have been turned into real albums (I'm still working on mixing/mastering last year's stuff):

2009 (15 songs) H.E.L.P. (Hippie Electro Lounge Pop)
2010 (20 songs) Introspectacle
2011 (18 Songs) Turn & Burn
2012 (18 Songs) Major Catastrophe

As a constraint this year I plan to write all my songs in major keys starting with the key of B and moving down. While this may not be a challenge for most, it will be for me since I tend strongly toward minor keys.....We'll see what happens... it may be a Major Catastrophe.

NOTE - When I post Lyrics it mean's there's a song waiting to have them shaped into. Lyrics as posted will change and unless noted are works of fiction wink

Well, I think I'm gonna wrap it up - 18 seems like a good number, and I'll likely need the next 5 days to finish the stragglers

FYI, thanks to all your encouragement [which I greatly appreciate] I've put myself up on Bandcamp. It's here: http://chrishensongs.bandcamp.com/

Oddly the music sounds extemely British to me? Not very American. That's what caught me on the jukebox.

Hey, Ron thanks for your comments. I'm impressed with your songs. I appreciate the depth of your lyrics and the thought that goes into your writing.

The performances and production is great, too.

Played one of your songs on the FAWMcast today: http://fawm.org/wiki/fawmcast_2012#the_daily_fawmcast_-_11

Nice work on hitting all twelve keys already. I'm also writing one piece on each of the twelve pitches, but I freed myself up to choose either major or minor. Best of luck!

Re: the mic pre-amp. My cheap-ass PreSonorus FireBox I/O gadget does offer power to the mics that need it. I have dreams of a six-foot rack of pre-amps and effects and whatnot to record through. And a Telefunken U-47. But my current budget says if it makes a sound, so be it.

Ron, I just have to say... your synth work on this album is absolutely stunning. Listeners, put on some good headphones, sit back, enjoy. . . I'm just in awe.
  • chrishensongs 3 months ago
Hey, I'm not really running the guitar through a pre-amp of any sort. Just directly into my I/O device. Now, I use a slew of preset amp models offered up in LogicPro. Typically I go for ones with the word "Tweed" in them. Meanwhile, the exciter plug-in is just called "Audio Exciter" and can be found in the "Helper" presets area. I hope this makes some sort of sense. I'm an old dog and LogicPro is a very new trick.

By the way, I do have an amp — one — that I use when playing out. A ten-year-old Fender Hot Rod. Not the best by any stretch, but good and loud. When in public I don't use any effects just because it's too hard to keep track of them all. Here's a regrettable sample: http://youtu.be/eNdR6XNAfUI [View at your own risk.]

hey! i'm a friend of flo paris and i wanted to let you know that she isn't here this year; she's taking this year off because she's in the middle of creating a really fantastic full album in studio. maybe you already knew that by now....anyway, i'm gonna check out your work! looks like you've been busy! happy FAWM! big_smile

OneToMany, I'm using LogicPro on a Mac Dual Quad. My guitar is a cheap Fender Squier Jazz Master with P90s, so it buzzes like a sumbitch. I run it directly into Logic using a PreSonus FireBox. The tone comes from a generous amount of tube-like distortion and running it through the wah pedal modeler and sticking the pedal somewhere around half way. It gives it a Brian May sound which covers for a lot of mistakes and quirks.

The mic is an AKG C3000, which is mid-heavy to me. I roll off the bottom end — 250 Hz and down — and add compression, limiting, a little space design [everybody says add reverb, but I'm going for that Fountains of Wayne sound, so I don't]. But the main thing is something I discovered last year called "audio exciter". It's a plugin to create even order harmonics above a user selectable frequency. So it creates super breathy high-end. I probably lean on this because over the years I've lost a lot of high-end hearing.

    Still working on re-edits.

Hey, yeah I'll post some info about my set up when I get home. It's pretty simple. By the way, totally agree with assessment of "On Again.". Needs a serious edit and remix. I'm going to cut the time in half and fix the balance issues. I'll let you know when it's posted. Thank you for all your comments!

Yo! Good to see you here. I'll try to pop by later when you've got some demos up. smile

Dude, re: your suggestion of synchronizing the alarm sound on my song Snooze Alarm, that's a really good idea. Thank you, FAWM-bro. [Speaking of which, would it be "FAWMbre" is Spanish? And would we wear "FAWMbreros?"

I've used every spare moment I could today and came up with the start to three songs..maybe four (we'll see if I can get the lyric up for the fourth). So pretty good progress. Lyrics slow me down the most. I'm finding myself offsetting the major keys with some very dark & heavy lyrics...I mean really down and dire...and I don't know from whence it springs....I'm really a pretty pleasant guy IRL

Haha! - Mr. Rogers for songwriting -- that's kind of what I was aiming for, I just didn't realize it at the time. Happy FAWMing.
  • onetomany 3 months ago
It'll probably be more a Major infraction sad
  • antbut 3 months ago
Sounds like a major endeavor! (Sorry-couldn't resist.)
  • onetomany 3 months ago
big_smile Yes I'm crazy, but FAWMs for stretching, right? And this should be a challenge. Reviewing my 2011 stuff I found it was mostly minor cause that's just where my ear goes - so I gotta hit Major boot camp...hope it doesn't all come out saccharine...hey maybe that's what I'll call the album! smile

You are either brave or quite quite mad, and I salute you from my minor castle made of angst and bitterness smile
