Bio

i'm declaring myself an unofficial FAWMling. i signed up last year, but then a wicked upper-respiratory claimed my voice for the month and a demanding teaching schedule claimed my time.

i'm in it to win it this year. i've been writing songs off and on longer than i can remember. but the last two years have been filled with a whirlwind of life changes that have taken me from coast to coast and left me with little emotional energy to devote to music.

i am now, for the moment, living in oklahoma. i'm married and by day i teach english online to koreans, study for my masters in international agriculture/development, snuggle with my dog and make up recipes to enchant and delight my new hubs.

i'm hoping FAWM 2012 will be the catalyst to get me back in the saddle of songwriting. thanks for tuning in!!

ps-if you like what you hear, be sure to follow my pages on facebook, soundcloud and twitter! xo

Sure-go ahead and try my song. That'll be great I think!
  • elizevanderlaan 2 months ago
Oh man, I was definitely listening to Don, not Lori! But whatever I was listening to, it was great.. I will look up Lori herself. Just finishing up another song, hopefully I will have it up by tomorrow. Do you have any advice for writer's block? I keep trying to write, get stuck about a verse or two into it and then toss the whole idea..
  • elizevanderlaan 2 months ago
Hey Nadia! A few weeks ago you left a comment on one of my songs about looking up Lori Chaffer. I had never heard of him before, and I am really enjoying listening to him! Thank you for introducing me to him, and, even more, thank you for your extremely kind words about my music. Unfortunately I have been sick and caught up with life this month, and it is a sad excuse but I have not been able to upload anymore songs! This weekend will definitely have to give me time to write at least one or two. I would love to hear more comments/advice. Also, I have been listening to your songs, and your voice and melodies are so beautiful and original. I really enjoy it! Thank you again.

Did you still want to try my Lonesome as a Kansas Prarie or it too late to start?
  •  davidkav 2 months ago
Just listened to your tune with @jbxl3. Nicely done. Just posted my last one. My fav thus far. Would love to hear what you think of it. I'm quite impressed by your musicianship and your voice!

Thanks, Nadia, for the lovely compliments (and yes, I have been known to be a jerk on many occasions.) wink Make it a fantastic weekend! Would love to hear what you think of the other tunes. smile

A lot of people have had that problem apparently... my tech-savvy boyfriend says it's a site problem, because he can click "download directly" and hear the tunes. I'm at his mercy, because I'm pretty computer illiterate, but I think you click the download directly link it still works.

Garage Band? Isn't that a Mac thing? I got Win tongue so I don't know much about that. But I still like that megaphone effect. I believe there was this guy back in the 1920s who actually sang through a megaphone. (Rudy -- something) any way there was a song that was popular back in the 70s, I believe. It was sung by (I don't remember), but I remember the name of the song "Winchester Cathedral." He sounded so great with that megaphone mix. How he did it I don't know. Any way I like the way you did it.

  • sophielynette 3 months ago
I can't give too much piano advice because I'm not too technical. I don't know much about brands. Mine's actually a Yamaha P-85 that I bought to replace the DGX-505 I had to leave behind in a move. Oh how I miss the DGX-505...
But I would say when buying a piano, definitely try it in store. You want to feel the keys, make sure they're not too light or heavy. If you're buying with a stand, really play it on the stand. I'm a heavy player and some of those stands I know I'd knock down.
    Best of luck!

Hi and thanks!......it is good to see a fellow stateswoman here.....I got called into work and missed the last 5-6 days. I'm off the next 3 so hopefully I'll get 7-8 songs in there somewhere. I really dug your midnight song and looking forward to listening to the rest.

Thanks for all your kind words, Nadia! I truly appreciate the feedback.
I'm almost done with my masters. I feel your pain and am impressed that you're here writing while in the midst of that. smile
  •  aquamunkee 3 months ago
Hey, thanks for the kind comment! Concerning the interesting sounds I used in Warped Time, the majority come right out of my recording software. I use Logic Pro, by Apple, and I think the majority of the samples are also provided with the free version of Garage Band that comes with any Mac. Hell, for songwriters, the Garage Band software is enough justification to switch from PC to Mac - it's a fantastic package, powerful and user-friendly.
  • funkdaddy 3 months ago
Thanks for the comment Nadia, glad you liked the tune!
  •  jnadon 3 months ago
Hi there! You can reach me via email at calgarynadon@gmail.com to discuss our collab, which for the record, I'm really excited about! smile
  •  wille 3 months ago
You are paired in the FOLKTRONICA album project with @jnadon. I have a good feeling about this one smile
  •  duaneclancy 3 months ago
Yes my lady Nadia. I owe you for two new lyrics smile I just wish I was as prolific on the music writin' side. I've always got a tune and beat in my head, but it never seems to get out to an instrument. I'm going to shoot for about 50 lyrics before the month is done, but I'm really hopin' to get the 14 1/2 recorded songs done ... that may be a stretch if I can't find some collaborators to lend a helpin' hand. It's still early though ... I still have about 25 days to go
  •  plainwhitetoast 3 months ago
I already had a title for Max's challenge, so I am trying not to learn the title of your skirmish, so I can do it tomorrow morning... maybe... I hope. smile
