Bio

I have been writing songs since I was 16 and I am now 56. Forty years later and I am more active with my music than ever before. I was formerly the manager of a well-respected folk music coffeehouse during the mid 1980's in Jamaica Plain, Mass called Peacock Coffeehouse (see new tribute site on Facebook), I have tried to keep my connections to the acoustic music community over the years. Now I am starting to understand things from the performer side and it is a new, interesting challenge. I have been able to do the 14 plus songs over the past four years and I have had some wonderful fun collaborations. I look forward to meeting new people, hopefully more folks from the Boston area and hearing new songs from everyone everywhere.

On Friday, January 27th, I am starting a new Songwriters in the Round series at Catbird Cafe in South Weymouth, Mass, the first series I have booked in a long time. We may be Ustreaming the Friday night show and future shows-stay tuned, I will be part of the first show along with Stephen Martin (formerly of Orpheus) and Nanci Hobson. Another songwriter/performer friend, Colette O'Connor will be giving vocal instruction at the same time in another part of the building. I don't think I would be doing this if my songwriting had not been jumpstarted by FAWM four years ago,

Hi Mike....sorry it took so long to reconnect...especially since we did a collab last year. So much music.
  •  mattblick 2 months ago
I actually have never seen South Park - but then I have not owned a TV since 1993...but I'll check it out
  •  mattblick 2 months ago
thanks for the comment! Here's your sequel!!!! http://fawm.org/songs/31591/
  • yarsky 2 months ago
Hey, looks like I can make the party! Thanks!

**Update: Unfortunately I will be in DC that weekend and won't get back until late Sunday. Sorry!
  • silentorder 2 months ago
Thanks for the heads up; I'll try to make it out on the 25th. smile
  •  beadysea 2 months ago
Oh awesome! Looks like I can make the Bloc 11 party smile Thanks!
  •  timmyriordan 2 months ago
    Thanks for organizing Mike smile
  • carpeliam 2 months ago
Hey Mike, thanks for the invite! That'd be a great time, I'll see if I can make it.
  •  billysea 2 months ago
NP Mike. There was a change in permissions from earlier years that confused me. Even when songs were locked in the past, both collaborators could go in and work on lyrics, add music or whatever. That is what confused me since I was named, but couldn't get in. Once I realized that was the case, I made a recommendation to fix that for future FAWMs : )
  •  timmyriordan 2 months ago
Hey Mike, I think Radio opens around 7:30... If y'all want to meet up before hand Bloc 11 might do.
  •  billysea 2 months ago
Hey Mike, Noticed Small Town Cop was locked and even I can't get in. Something wrong?
  •  bethdesombre 2 months ago
25th would work for me. Never been to Radio (or even heard of it before these conversations) but happy to give it a try.
  •  heavyhedonist 2 months ago
of course, Mike-- take what you need, add me as collab if possible. i wasn't trying to steal your thunder, i just didn't see your words there on fender's page until just now.
  •  bethdesombre 2 months ago
Nooooo! Don't do a FAWM gathering on the 18th! I have a gig in NYC on the 17th and won't be back . . . I'd be really sad to miss it. Any chance of a different weekend?
  •  rickamorphis 2 months ago
Thanks for the cool comment Mike...I came down with the FAWM Flu last week and am struggling to get a couple more songs out. Congrats on your month.
  •  billysea 2 months ago
Hi Mike, sure, I'll give Sm Town Cop a try. It may have to be tomorrow or (gasp) Wednesday because I trying to wrap up several other collabs but will certainly give it a go : )
  •  fendertele71 2 months ago
Michael, I love the lyrics you wrote for My Left, Your Right. Eould you want to record them over the audio I posted? I can tag you as a collaborator on the track.
  •  timmyriordan 2 months ago
If we're doing a get together on a Sunday I think I'd be more inclined towards meeting at the Radio open mike in Union Square--though I have yet to actually go there. Veggie Planet drives me a little nuts--(by which I mean I'm not particularly found of the food), also, we'd all get a chance to play a song or two at an open mike. The sign up for Radio is 7:30...
  •  bethdesombre 2 months ago
Would love to be involved in a Boston-area FAWM after-party! Keep me posted.
  •  billysea 2 months ago
Awesome Mike. Looking forward to hearing it smile
  •  billysea 2 months ago
Hi Mike, I'm already done with Scooby Doo (and Would Holly, Honey This and Honey That, and Curlies on the Soap) just need to spend a little time getting a better demo than my iPhone version but I certainly don't mind you putting up a version as well. I don't mind you changing/adding words are all and would love to hear what you come up with on it. Would that work for you?
  •  billysea 2 months ago
H Mike, until it is the 29th, I don't know that it is too late for a collaboration : )
  •  beadysea 2 months ago
Hey Mike! Thanks smile Don't remember you from last year I'm afraid, but I don't remember anyone, I wasn't around much. I'm a little behind schedule right now but I'm still really happy with this year so far... looks like you're doing good! One half to go smile And I'd definitely be down for a Boston FAWM after-party.
  •  jonniegrunge 3 months ago
Hi Mike. It was my pleasure working with your track. Awesome that you added it to Jango. I don't think I've checked that out before. I'll have to get Fender and my music on there.
  • slyswell 3 months ago
    Mike,

My song is up. Thanks for the challenge! I wouldn't have dared to make a song about my hometown if not for your request..
  •  petra777 3 months ago
    heya,
ya ive been checking in but havent been able to do much...been a rough month so commiting solidly has been an issue...but id be glad to check out anything & give it a try...may have to extend into march/april/may though..ha!
  •  errol 3 months ago
Allo MGM! Thanks for the offer! I am not, however an illustrator! It takes me HOURS to do original artwork... smile So when it comes to art requests, I must decline because it's not something that comes easily to me... I'm flattered though!
  •  errol 3 months ago
ALLLOOO MGM. You know, we were talking about you on the FAWMCast... well... we were talking behind the scenes, @Johnniegrunge and I. big_smile
  •  robs 3 months ago
Thank you for your nice comment. I'm still doubting if the Abbey Road approach was the best for the Tweening challenge, but I couldn't get it out of my head (I've listened to the Beatles too many times I'm afraid).
  •  jonniegrunge 3 months ago
Hi Mike. I posted the music. I hope you like what I did with it. I'm pleased with where it went. Let me know what you think.
  •  jonniegrunge 3 months ago
Hi Mike! Just wanted to let you know that I'm close to sending you a demo for If You Were Looking. I really like the lyrics, and I've been playing with a few different approaches to the song. I think I found one I'm happy with, so I'll be recording it tonight and tomorrow. Did you want me to send it to you first before posting it?
  • lhcisco 3 months ago
Hey what's up man?! Cool with the song!!
  •  nightengale 3 months ago
Hi Mike, Thank You for the song! I think you really put some emotion in this with your voice and guitar! You did a great job, maybe another collab sometime?
  •  cloudboy 3 months ago
Mike! Congrats on getting to 14! I can't wait to hear a Puerto Rican on The Moon!
  •  mikedebenham 3 months ago
Thanks, Michael. And yep, Phil is a very talented collaborator. Highly recommended. smile
  •  chipwithrow 3 months ago
Interesting to read about your coffeehouse-managing days - my sister-in-law and her husband recently moved to Jamaica Plain. It's a funky, eclectic, cool neighborhood - just visited there for the first time a few months back.
  • theodamus 3 months ago
Thank you! Unfortunately my hair is no longer bright pink... it's more bright ginger. Which is about as outlandish as you can go while still looking "professional". tongue
  •  nightengale 3 months ago
That would be awesome Mike, tweek whatever you need. Let me know and I'll add you as collab, or you can add it!
  •  cowex 3 months ago
In time! I'm just slow to post stuff. Yeah, it'll probably look something like that. smile
  •  jonniegrunge 3 months ago
Hi Mike! I just checked out the lyrics. They look great. Definitely a bit more optimistic than I usually write, but I like the uplifting feel, and I can hear music with it. I'm going to play around with a few ideas for it this week and see what shapes up.
  • emma4eva 3 months ago
    Hi there smile
Just saw your comment on my song - would love it if you could try and record the music for it, would be really grateful! big_smile
  • tweeningzone 3 months ago
Hope you do the tweening challenge too!
  • slyswell 3 months ago
Hey Mike . Could you give me a general idea of what americans know about montreal. I may be searching too hard to find something you guys don't know about.
  •  jonniegrunge 3 months ago
Hi Mike. Sorry to a while to get back to you on our random collab. I've been away for work this week, and I'm just getting a chance to come back to FAWM. I'd prefer to work on the music / recording end of the collab, if that's okay by you. We can split things out however you'd like. Looking forward to working with you!
  • slyswell 3 months ago
    Hi Mike,

I don't think I'll write 15 songs , but it's ok. It's not a contest. I'll write way more than I would have if not for fawm. That's what matters.

So..... a guy from Montreal is teamed up with a guy from Boston .Haha Interesting. I cannot think of anything else sorry....I'll have to ask you to make a song about Big Z Zdeno Chara.

    have fun!
  • silentorder 3 months ago
Hey, thanks for the welcome. smile Look forward to seeing and hearing more of your stuff.

I'll let you know, though -- #8 has A&T, while #9 has Gabrielle (with #9 being a double album with a lot of great stuff -- we wanted to go out with a bang).
  •  cloudboy 3 months ago
I'd love to have a monster FAWM. I'd like to get some real keepers out of it! Thanks Mike.
  •  johncrossman 3 months ago
I'll sign you up for the random collab list, which I am randomizing now...
