I'm so glad to see your visits to the Derek and Ever-Revolving Mechanical Fairy Forest cycles. I will be back in touch over the weekend. Thank you, Mike.

  • @quork  Mar 14

Mike, thanks for your comment. Much appreciated.

  • @mikegtz  Mar 13

MIke, Thanks for visiting my Dream song. I will swing by some of your tunes in the next couple weeks.

  • @audrey  Mar 13

Thanks so much for listening and for your kind comment on my and Cindy's song "Silver Anniversary". You mentioned Ron Sexsmith, who I had never heard before, so I'm listening to him right now, and I gotta say, I like what I'm hearing, so thank you for the comparison.

  • @fearlessflight2014  Mar 13

Wow, thanks for visiting my songs- I feel honoured! I love your music. 😀

  • @barbara  Mar 9

Thanks, Mike. I really appreciate your comment on 'This Alchemy'. I can be counted on for some brooding or mournful sounds every challenge, though I had made it a goal to steer away from it this time. This one slipped out and reveals how natural that state is for me. Dammit. =p

  • @oddbod  Mar 9

I still do the occasional SongFight when the title inspires me, although it's looking a bit thin on the ground there at the moment but maybe that's just a FAWM effect.

  • @miltz  Mar 7

Thanks for some good listening (in at least two senses).

The saz, if I remember correctly, was all my sister, but the komuz was from both of them.

Maybe I'll see you at 50/90 (I'll be signing up, though whether I'll get anything done is another question) or KVR (I haven't taken part in the contest since I stopped running it, but I keep half-meaning to). Otherwise, I'll see you here next year, I hope.

  • @oddbod  Mar 7

I meant to ask if you did much musically for the rest of the year these days. I think I've noticed the occasional KVR music café song.
BTW, is your complete FAWM back-catalogue around anywhere? Better Than Love and Blue Crayon are two (at the very least) which I really would like to have downloaded

  • @caterwauler  Mar 7

"Lighter" : Got it, thanks for clarifying. 😀
Yeah, Surreptitious is definitely lighter (regarding the number of tracks), but I doubt it will retain its lightness after a couple of post-FAWM-tweaking sessions. Lightness (or "nimbleness") is definitely a weak point in my soundtrack stuff. It does sound smaller sometimes, but not nimble -- at least, not to my ears. Every track is awfully busy, and neo-classical purists would probably kill me in reviews, if they listened. 😀 But for me, it's therapeutic. My screwed-up hearing is now under control (almost) thanks to this soundtrack project.
Interesting, what you said about your friend. "The music knew before he did." I often say that my songs write themselves. I barely have a clue of what I'm doing when I record them, especially during FAWM. Well, I know what direction I want to take, but the final outcome is always a surprise.

Googled "average vocal range". I had no clue!

  • @caterwauler  Mar 6

Haha, thanks for taking the time to record the folk version. Yes, it definitely works. But you would make anything work, wouldn't you?

"If that's unassisted" : Not sure what you mean. It *is* assisted, with heavy reverb, and a filter to cut off the lower resonances. As for my range, it's far from remarkable ; I have a 4.5 octaves span, at most, and both extremities are laborious (and ugly).

Re the "lighter tone", and the "smaller scale settings" : none of my songs from this year beats the light tone of a couple of my 2015 and 2016 pieces. But maybe the way I read "lighter" is wrong.
As for the "smaller scale", well... In the past couple of years, I've received a scary number of comments suggesting that the stuff I do nowadays is OK, but deterring for a number of people who enjoyed what I did before. As far as I'm concerned, the "smaller scale" would feel like a regression. I enjoy a lot working on massive pieces. But I understand that not everyone enjoys them, and I'm OK with that

  • @judypie Mar 6

Haha I guess. I once went to Pukkelpop there and that was pretty awesome! And waffles yo. Belgian it is! 😝

  • @candle Mar 6

Thanks for the comment on Hey Theory. As a co-collaborator, I'm interested in @isaacq 's lyrics as well. I should bug him to post them for us (or at least share them with me LOL). Again, thanks for the comment!

    See You In The Shadows…

  • @oddbod  Mar 5

2017 looks like being another vintage year for Chateau Debenham. Well done, you've managed to pull my emotions around to and fro yet again with another diverse and wonderful set of songs!
Perhaps we can revisit our Hope/Crosby act again sometime.

  • @judypie Mar 5

Hey Mike, thanks so much for listening! Ummm Belgian?! I do get a fair few American comments when I speak but no, you're both wrong! English born and bred here 😝

  • @jbp123 Mar 3

Thanks for the lovely comments! I was thrown by the comment on my fake collaboration with @judypie; were you discussing my nationality or hers? I'm from Birmingham, UK, and Julie is from the north somewhere. I'm 90% sure she can tell you where.

  • @karlsburg25  Mar 3

Cheers for orange lady comment and yeah what a thought having Tom cruise and a homeless woman in one song. Never thought about that!

  • @caterwauler  Mar 2

Thank you for your lovely comments. I would be curious to hear "that lilting melody [...] as a solo folk song". I tried to imagine it but couldn't.

  • @adforperu  Feb 28

Ha, fair dues. Ooo, you sneaked over 14, well played. I should be up to speed on your work on my lunch hour.. exciting!

  • @jessica14  Feb 27

Look at you! You made it! Congratulations or "Herzlichen Glückswunsch" as we say over here in the land of beer and bratwurst! 😀

  • @nancyrost  Feb 27

I understand, and it's not so odd. We can talk about Hoops (and Derek if you like) after FAWM is over. Hope you're having a good time with song number 14!

  • @jessica14  Feb 26

No worries Mike, my songs will be up all year. Just them lovely songs coming! <3

  • @jessica14  Feb 24

I just wanted to send you send you some encouragement! 11 down, 3 more to go! Hope you haveing lots of fun this FAWM 😀

  • @scottlake Feb 22

Post away! Sounds like you had some additional fun with it.

  • @scottlake Feb 18

Mike, yes let's do it. I assume you're up first. Send me a guide track and framework of chords, tempo etc. once you're ready.

  • @sherrycanary  Feb 16

    Hi Mike
Thank you for your kind words on It Wasn't Me. Means a lot coming from you. I will be back for more listening. Was out of town and just catching up!

  • @miltz  Feb 12

Thank you for all the encouraging comments.

I do like Grouper. Very much.

Our collab: I have some partial lyrics and a vague notion or two. I'll send you an email later tonight or tomorrow.

  • @echovoodoo Feb 11

Okay, okay, you can get your orphan now. Treat him/her well.

  • @caterwauler  Feb 10

Thank you for your beautiful comments. It's always a pleasure to read your feedback, and I enjoy listening to your songs even more.

  • @fearlessflight2014  Feb 10

Thanks Mike! It was kind of you to visit my profile and listen. I'm glad you liked 'Lucky Girl'.

  • @judypie Feb 10

Haha I wonder if he loves me three times as much or if actually, he's three times as talented?! 😝

  • @adforperu  Feb 10

Yeah, I had to google his name and was somewhat annoyed that there was a far more famous Schumann, ha. Just think, 20 or so years ago I'd have had to shell about £50 for an encyclopedia for that tit-bit. Pretty frivolous I'd admit..

  • @jessica14  Feb 9

Hello Mike! I remembered your music from last year and I was specifically looking for you, checking if you're back and here you are. I am looking forward to your songs this year! I already love this stuff you've down so far... I hope you don't mind that I am fangirling you like that 😀

  • @jbp123 Feb 7

Had to come back to listen again/download. I've played the stuff to my girlfriend and she loves it too. There's so much integrity in your music. Bravo, my friend.

  • @chasingandromeda  Feb 6

Good question. Wish I had an answer. Have a few hours tonight. Let's see what happens. The day gig is kicking my ass.

  • @judypie Feb 6

hehehe cheers for the listen Mike, ack well it's the only voice I have so I'll persevere with it I guess! 😀

  • @scottlake Feb 6

Mike, your lyrics and vocals and guitar are always from the soul. Do you need any bass or keyboards or harmony vocals? Perhaps a theme on Maya Angelou's "The Human Family" poem or Bobby Kennedy's quote https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/au...

  • @adforperu  Feb 6

Thank you for the kind comments 😀 The Schumann line is from that iconic photo of the chap jumping over the barbed wire in Berlin.

  • @sacraficialglam  Feb 4

Oh yes i will play the musics. likely next week sometime.

  • @fortelmfield  Feb 3

Bahaha, good catch on our profile info being out of date, Mike! Fixed it now...

  • @nancyrost  Feb 3

You should totally write that vermilion antelopes song!

  • @karlsburg25  Feb 2

I gagging to listen but Indian wifi says no. Argh

  • @oddbod  Feb 2

I sent you an email which you may want to ignore

  • @autoclamp  Feb 1

Am I here? Are you? Is this real? Too excited! I've got to play it...

  • @songsville  Feb 1

Ha! Me too... I can't pick who lived near me, unfortunately, all part of the challenge ...

  • @ericdistad  Feb 1

Hello Mike! So glad to see you back again!

  • @elainedimasi  Feb 1

    There's always hope!

  • @spinhead  Jan 31

    Hopefully, indeed.

  • @isaacq  Jan 31

you, sir, are my favourite. just don't tell anybody.

  • @echovoodoo Jan 31

I guess that'd make me feel better about only writing a few songs - wouldn't want to bankrupt you with too many new mouths to feed.

    Have a good one!

  • @caterwauler  Jan 31

Glad to see you back. Thank you for your kind words ; I don't care much about hope : relentlessness makes for better results.
Well, you know, FAWM collabs are no good for my sanity... I would be glad to collaborate at any other time of the year, when we don't have to rush.
Looking forward to your new tunes.

  • @miltz  Jan 31

No 50/90ing. I signed up, got a first verse or two written, but things were such that I felt more like watching movies than making music. So I did that instead.

  • @nancyrost  Jan 31

Debenham! So good to see you again. FAWM can't come soon enough.

  • @karlsburg25  Jan 31

Hey Mike. Good to see you (if thats the correct term staring at your name 😉 ) Looking forward to some more magic from you this year

  • @shortdan  Jan 31

    Woop woop!

  • @oldlostjohn  Jan 31

Good to see you're back, Mike. Happy fawming.

  • @oddbod  Jan 31

I have this half baked idea that came to me in the middle of the night very recently. For some reason I thought you are the person I need to share it with and take it forward. I will hold back till tomorrow before explaining and you tell me it's b****cks

  • @miltz  Jan 31

This might be the year we get a collaboration in. In any case, happy FAWMing. I look forward to hearing what you get up to.

  • @scottlake Jan 30

Mike, I hope you are back this year and fancy a collab.

  • @oddbod  Jan 29

Once again hello me old mucker

  • @adforperu  Jan 28

    Holler. Yes?

  • @mdavisto Jan 28

"And if you can, find something better than love."

I did. It is called Mike Debenham.
