I had an internet-friend from Australia once who would always recommend Augie March to me. I remember not quite getting into them, but that was almost 20 years ago now (argh) and perhaps it's time to try again!

  • @oldlostjohn  Mar 13

Thanks for giving us all these wonderful songs of yours and for listening and commenting on mine. Hope to see you again next FAWM.

  • @owl  Mar 13

Heh it just really surprised me, I wasn't taking NZ indie as a specific reference point for that particular song and I don't think I've ever explicitly namechecked it before! I don't know the Triffids at all (but I don't know if that was an actual comment about Jill Birt or a hypothetical one.)

  • @caterwauler Mar 12

Thank you for your feedback on our catcore songs.
I enjoy Peter Gabriel's stuff. I've listened to Passion countless times.

  • @spinhead  Mar 10

I've loved hearing what everyone gets from "Here Before." I want my music to make people feel something.

  • @quork  Mar 10

Thanks for listening and commenting, Mike, much appreciated. As you can tell, I’ve been heavily influenced by Bone Machine. I got the sonic inspiration for “Things They Don’t Tell You In the Bible” from Black Wings. I love the guitar solo in that song.

  • @nancyrost  Mar 9

Oh yes, I do hear that connection ... hope the cousins are distant enough!

  • @leepat  Mar 9

Hey, thanks for listening and commenting - much appreciated! I've kind of resigned myself to the gradual degradation, so I expect to have some jolly good old time 😀

  • @owl  Mar 9

Thanks for the comments! You should check out at least the liner notes for my track "Dunedin", speaking of 1980s NZ indie 😀

  • @songsville  Mar 7

Thanks Mike, insightful as always, and always a boost to have someone give it the full listen. I like your Collage term, I was just looking for a good description/genre ...

  • @adforperu  Mar 7

Ah, thank you for the commenting sesh. Re: TLOU.. the percussion is; kick = Sam's dad (forgotten his name) shooting himself in the head (the fall of the body gave a lovely sound too but Elie went and sighed loudly over it didn't she!). The snare is just Elie opening a door before all that happens, and compressed within an inch of its life. That sort of stuttering effect (you can hear a little scream in it), is when that soldier... that BLOODY soldier... he..he...shoots S...s...sar... no, I can't write it. :'(

  • @sherrycanary  Mar 3

Thank you for commenting on the lyrics to She Sang Oh Happy Day.
I had the experience so long ago that brought pure joy into my life...and then got to experience again wben Tim brought it to life

  • @judypie  Mar 2

Thanks Mike! I'd love to think that was lurking in my voice somewhere. More experimentation needed methinks 😀 Keep meaning to pick up an electric yes!

  • @mdavisto  Mar 2

    Also, congratulations on your 14!

  • @mdavisto  Mar 2

Thank *you*, Mike, for being part of our thingy. And in fact, you're in it more than you realise.

I decided it needed a bass voice, so I cloned you and pitched you an octave down. That's you holding up the last 8 bars.

  • @sacraficialglam  Mar 1

    14! Congrats on the accomplishment.

  • @oddbod  Feb 28

Well done notching up 14 what with your technical problems. Another fine album with some particularly exceptional highlights

  • @leepat  Feb 27

Hey, no worries. Thanks to you for all the witty lyrics and music - always a pleasure! You're almost there anyway 😀 Mad mad month

  • @oddbod  Feb 27

I know - I seem to have hit a good run this year. Having 10 collabs helps though.

  • @adforperu  Feb 26

Hello sir, may I earmark you for a collaboration next year please.. I think it's about time..

  • @coolparadiso  Feb 25

And you are an artist! Theives and acrobats is the best ive heard!

  • @songsville  Feb 20

Hi Mike, thanks for the nice thought. I've posted something, BTW.

"Should I make time to listen to mantra's work as an album, or is it okay to dip in?" I'm being very experimental with this project, so feel free to not listen at all. Just dip in if you feel so inclined. The songs are not sequential.

Thank you for listening and commenting.

"Am I right in thinking the world of your book lives through grand cycles [...]" The plot I narrate covers three weeks (roughly), but with music I approach the world as a whole, not just the book's story. The four soundtrack songs you've listened to deal with more generic themes, and will belong to the appendix EP.
"I feel I should try turning you off and on again to fix the bugs in your system" My system works fine. It's others' interfaces that are at fault. 🙂
"Are you in the mood for a collaboration this year?" Would you agree to walk into my world? If so, that should be doable. I'll send you stuff with room for your stuff. No lead vocals, no lyrics bullshit (as far as I'm concerned - you do what you want.)

  • @lcad Feb 17

Thanks for your comment on ten thousand letters. I started with a 'million' and then thought, 'more'. A zillion felt too much but a billion might just be the right amount of hyperbole.

  • @fonte  Feb 17

Hey Mike thanks for the nice comment on 'fruit' glad you liked the intro it's a bit longer than usual 😉

  • @shortdan  Feb 17

Quite partial to a bit of XTC actually! 😀

  • @oddbod  Feb 15

Well spotted that man, it is indeed our old friend the Koestler Rigoletto

  • @ayehahmur  Feb 14

Thanks for taking the time to comment, Mike!

  • @aprilm  Feb 11

Thanks so much for your kind comments on Stay the Night!

  • @spinhead  Feb 11

Flower Print Dress: in retrospect, the vagueness was unintentional but natural. Good catch. Glad it worked.

  • @coolparadiso  Feb 11

thx for your comments looking forward to your next songs. enjoyed them all so far

  • @echovoodoo Feb 5

I'd be happy to collab with you, Mike, though it may take me a few days to get back to you sometimes. Let me know what you've got in mind.

  • @susyblue  Feb 4

Year of the Cardigan - surely that's just another song dying to happen? (ooh slightly off pun) We're all growing old together every February awww. Yes also saw him at the recital centre, was pretty happy. I loved how he said he still plays with his eyes shut 😀 Yes house hunting but in Dandenong hills so somewhat more achievable ut still just as depressing in terms of actually ever getting a frkcn house... oh well first world problems

  • @judypie  Feb 4

Hey Mike! My songs are ticked as downloadable so I'm wondering why there's no download option on them.. Ad has the same issue! I shall try to resolve, thanks!

  • @ericdistad  Jan 31

Ah yes, Mr Debenham. We shall be expecting great things from you this year. Great things.

  • @scottlake  Jan 2018

Mike - here's hoping you find time for FAWM 2018. I would enjoy another collaboration if you (and I) have the time.

  • @oddbod  Jan 2018

Hi Mike. The old place wouldn't be the same without you, so I hope your planning on being here again.

  • @shortdan  Jan 2018

Hello there! Hope you're in again this year - always look forward to hearing what you come up with 😀

  • @adforperu  Jan 2018

  • @spinhead  Jan 2018

I'm feeling some trepidation this year. Last year I wrote some of my best stuff ever, so I'm having can-I-do-it-again-itis.
