Bio

This is my 3rd FAWM. However, last year I concentrated on finalizing existing songs over at the RPM Challenge (including some of the 50/90 stuff). I plan to go for the 14 in 2010.

Song style? Not really. There's a small group that do country and country flavored stuff quite a bit. Most of it is rock. Several guitar/vox guys. It started as a recording forum and has slowly transmuted into more of a songwriting forum. It's got the same supportive style community as here but they love good production as much as good songwriting.

It's going through some growing pains now but over all has been awesome. 64guitars is the man when it comes to Boss products and he's very helpful with site help as well.

Kevin-- i found several local-to-me writing groups at http://meetup.com, where you can type in your zip and subject/search for a group, and get local results. there's no charge to join Meetup, though some individual groups may have a small yearly fee to offset the cost of starting the group.
  •  John Crossman 1 week ago
Yeah, there are a lot of activities right now. I'd be happy to discuss more if you shoot me an email, though I'm not part of the administration, just a 3 year member. A couple events that have been going for a while are:

A monthly critique - I'm a big fan and always attend, hoping to get and give some useful feedback on new songs. Can be good with 4 people or 14, and attendance goes up and down. Plus, it just needs a quiet room somewhere.

Songwriters in the Round - 3-4 songwriters playing mostly original music in a round-robin format. I think it's supposed to be based on the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, where writers are literally in the middle of the room and the center of attention. Ours isn't usually that informal, but it could be... Needs a songwriter-friendly venue and works best when the songwriters each promote it and thereby increase the audience. It also works well when one of the songwriters is a local "name" and draws people, but that's just an observation.

    Sorry to go on!

Hey Kevin. Like hh below me, I saw your post about a local songwriters group. I'm a fan of local groups, great idea. I'm a member of one (or two, but one's a local chapter of a national group, NSAI) in my area in Madison, WI, and it seems like it's gaining some momentum. Just as an example/encouragement, here's our website with some of the recent and regular activies:

hey, Kevin, your idea about finding a writing group (in the DOWN thread) is right on. I hope some people take it to heart.
  •  kathy moran 1 week ago
Thanks for opening the thread on "Some people just don't get fawm". I don't think I could add anything that hasn't been said, but wanted to just say thanks for starting a very interesting thread. If you find you'd like to do a cowrite when 5090 rolls around, please let me know. I'm still tidying things up here in the meantime. All the best.
  • roddy 1 week ago
Thanks for the comment I appreciate your views. Yep - it's strange but true that the British helped with the blues revival in the USA. It seems that places like Liverpool were catalysts because that's where ships could bring in genuine blues records from America.
  •  dftaylor 1 week ago
Don't worry about it - thanks for the comment. smile

    Hi Kevin
Thanks for BIAB info. What kind of mic do you use for vocals?
  •  G Slade 2 weeks ago
Re: Chasing Rainbows ... if you think that's my best tune, then i'm pretty sure you won't be buying any of my concert tickets, wink
  •  sherrycanary 2 weeks ago
    Kevin
I have BIAB, but never used it for recording..duh!
Can you give me pointers how to use it for making demos? Maybe you could email me.
I have all these tunes and no demos...and had the technology( except maybe proper mic) here.
    Thank...and congrats on 14+
  • nightengale 2 weeks ago
I'm loving " Movie In My Head Too" Awesome song Kev and Dev!
  •  devin 3 weeks ago
I'm loving "Movie In My Head" more every time I hear it...you really nailed it Kevin!

The latest tweaks you did (and the background vocals from Joice Marie...perfect), are really great. I REALLY love your voice on that song...perfect job.

I absolutely 100% think we should submit for FAWMpilation 2010...I'll pay the $10 big_smile

  •  sheilerk 3 weeks ago
Thanks Kevin, for the encouragement. Yeah, I guess you're right, I do seem to like to work under pressure, maybe its the adrenalin thing, lol!
  • Lewis Mason 3 weeks ago
thank you for the kind words smile yeah i'm just a bit of a shamble with the post-writing phase ahah, I need to invest in some decent recording equipment! I would have probably done it a shy better and been able to re-record if I hadn't procrastinated for about 10 minutes uploading photos on another website :3

    Kevin,

That's me... been working on a persona concept, a couple of people. Me a little deeper and then a woman's voice too. Hoping it will open up some new lyrical routes.

    Thanks for the comment.

  •  devin 4 weeks ago
I checked through our comments on the "development" thread, and then I removed it as you suggested.

The double post was making me look like a winner already, so we can't have that yet wink

Congrats on the great tune, and on exceeding your FAWM quota already! I gotta get moving...maybe some one-hand piano experiments are called for smile
  • nightengale 4 weeks ago
Kevin, Thanks for the comment and congrats!!! You're really putting out some good songs yourself, I do love fawm, so much that it was hard going out of town to the sports expo over the weekend (cause when I don't write for a couple days, for some reason it's harder to write the first one LOL!)
  • Dennis Jernberg 1 month ago
Oh yeah, you're on the East Coast... I understand your frustration now, what with the snow and all. smile

Since I don't have to deal with snow (up in Vancouver, they even have to truck it in for the Winter Olympics), my frustration's with my other songs, This was a little burst of euphoria after all my struggles with getting my fingers to do what I want on the fretboard and with "small matters" of drum programming. It was an outlet for that. I occasionally have to do something like that just to keep myself sane, an explosion like this or something totally stupid like the songs I did last year that inspired me to write "Practice Song".

Which reminds me, I should do the "song about nothing" challenge... wink
  • Dennis Jernberg 1 month ago
Wow! My first negative comment in FAWM, ever. I'm flattered. smile

Yes, that song *is* bad. Intentionally. It's a homage to no-talent punk rock bands. (And I made sure to tag it "nsfw".) Not my normal kind of stuff; I just wanted to get that bit of poison out of my system while it was still topical. Consider it a "practice song" if you like. I do. wink

Now I'll return to the superior songs that continue to take forever for me to record...
  • bobbypizazz 1 month ago
Hi Kevin on "Frame My Heart' I haven't demoed it yet. I just tweaked the lyrics. Give it a read. Thanks Bobby
  • bobbypizazz 1 month ago
Oh, BTW this song is kinda pop-country. Thank you for the tip on demo link. Bobby
  • bobbypizazz 1 month ago
Hi Kevin I just saw your comment. "We all need each other too" is a two chord song G and Cmaj 9th sus 6th. I haven't demoed it yet. I play it in my live shows, but the lyric needs to be tighter. So it is up for grabs for collab. Thanks for the comments. See you on the RAMP. Bobby
  • bholt 1 month ago
Kevin, congratulations for making it all the way through this challenge! I know I won't, but I figure anything that gets me to write more is good.
  •  sheilerk 1 month ago
Thanks Kevin, for your comments on HSN. Yes that was a bridge, of sorts. Lee never expected that one to actually wind up with words when he wrote it, but I'm a die hard, and gave it words anyway. Thanks for the encouragement, and kind words. I've gotten several written now, just need to get them posted. The vocal recordings are holding things up. They're building a house next door and I have a great dane. She thinks she can chase them away with her barking. Congratulations on your win! I will be listening to more as soon as I have a little time smile
  •  Bruce H. McCosar 1 month ago
Thanks for the comment on "Rain Just Keeps Coming Down" -- I think I've actually learned quite a bit from this "no robots" experiment. One, I've learned my rhythm skills are a lot better than I thought -- there's a paranoia that happens when the recording light goes on, and there's nothing to start the song. I got over that pretty quick, but still, if I hadn't tried it, I'd never have known.

But then I sort of feel like a moron as well, because just about everyone who self-identifies as 'folk' can carry a rhythm, dance, sing, and tell a story, all in perfect time, all without a metronome / click track / etc. So I've basically invented the wheel big_smile
  •  cts 1 month ago
Yes, that's all me...even the ending. No, I'm kidding.
  •  cts 1 month ago
Congratulations on the win...and yes, there is snow. Lots and lots of snow. And lots and lots of bad driving.
  • toms 1 month ago
Thanks for the kind comment and listen, Kevin!
  •  cts 1 month ago
    ...snow day. Suuuuuurrrrrrrre. wink
  •  Corinne Curcio 1 month ago
Hi Kevin - you asked about Sunny Sitar Sunday - I looped aTamboura drone from a CD of sounds, and played guitar and dhumbeks - The violin, sitar, pizzicato strings, bassoon, and flutely sounds all courtesy of my 17 year old Yamaha keyboard. smile
  • Dennis Jernberg 1 month ago
You noticed the improvements! Actually, superior equipment helps a lot. For one thing, I have a really good microphone now, and that in itself has improved my vocals. And this time around, I'll actually be playing my guitars now that I've got a year of lessons behind me.

And now I'll give your stuff a listen.
  • Audita Sum 1 month ago
Ah, no. I hadn't heard of that. This was sort of a parody of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" from the musical of the same name.
  • Audita Sum 1 month ago
    Christine car? I don't follow.
  •  cts 1 month ago
Here's the how: during breaks at work I hit the lyrics-only FAWMers. Once I'm home, I've resolved that more "studio time" will be dedicated to listening to demos. Plus, I'm an early riser (4 am) and I get a great deal done before it's off to work.
  • Karla September 1 month ago
Thanks for the heads-up on my link. smile
  •  devin 1 month ago
My good man, may I formally inform you that "Devin's collab curse" is now firmly wrapped around your guitar neck.

In the past 3 events, I have been assigned a random collab partner, and every one has immediately dropped out of the challenge. No foolin' !

So...it's up to you to break the curse! I will do as much (or as little) as you specify...send me a note telling me what you're up for, and I'll fill in the blanks my good dude!
  • nightengale 1 month ago
Thanks for the comments Kevin. Notice though that I've been doing alot of rewriting here. Started major rewrites last week, and only a little new stuff.
  •  Chasing Andromeda 1 month ago

Nice to see you on the trail again this year Kevin!
  •  VikkiFlawith 2 months ago
Hey Kevin. I'm planning to do RPM too this year -- I've got a list of 10 songs I've written over the past 3 or 4 years during FAWM or 50/90, that I want to record. Look forward to hearing yours!
