Bio

I'm an academic philosopher by day, but I've also been writing and studying music since 1997. I've recorded hundreds of songs and five self-produced albums. I also write a blog devoted to songwriting exercises and experiments. You can read it at http://www.organizingsound.com

I thought this would be a fun way to get a productive start on the year. I've already set a goal of mixing one song a month this year and I thought this might be a great way to generate some scratch tracks. With that in mind, I'll try to stick to rough and simple recordings of guitar and vocals for the most part.

Perhaps my half-song will be the mix for this month.

You can listen to my songs on this site, but I'm also hosting the whole playlist on soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/john-thomas-mumm/sets/february-14-song-challenge/

Addendum - I think the area was actually the size of Deleware.

    Your apologetic servant,

Hi John Thomas Mumm - thank you kindly, and like Moses led his people through yonder desert to the Land of Milk and Honey (40 years to cross an area the size of Maryland) - I will also lead my peoples across the span of Omega Bridge to yonder Promised Land, and will also hopefully take 40 years to do it.

Very much looking forward to hearing your tracks. Perhaps one day you can describe for us how "Ant Misses His Home" and elucidate on kindred mysteries. May Zerovzero Always Walk With You! Remember when you look back and see only one set of footprints in the sand, it was then that Zerovzero was carrying you in his arms!

You must thank Mr Duck personally from me, he did a magnificent job!, I'd like to do some more with him

Nice blog! I'll check it out later when I've got some free time on my hands.
  •  mattblick 3 months ago
I am still reading it but it's slow going! Not cos it's bad it's brilliant, but it's so full of brilliant info I have to be fully present when I'm reading it - and like Bob Dylan I'm not always there!

Thanks for the props on your blog for Beatles Songwriting Academy hope to give you a shout back midweek. Enjoyed reading your comments on the Indiesongwriter site. You're spot on - what band is considered dangerous 20 years on. Sex Pistols and Ramones shirts are fashion item now for goodness sake!

Not at all, I'd be honored. I've got a bleeped version on my site if you'd rather use that - the URLs posted on the one-chord thread.

    Thanks!

If you would like to post I'm At Ease, that would be great!
  •  kidd 3 months ago
I consider it ready for the masses! Love it!

Thanks for the great comment on Emergence. Yes, it's an odd take on Creation Ex Nihilo, one I don't really subscribe to. But I like the image of it - more as a thought experiment then anything else (as I stated in the liner notes). Its nice to see the interest of a fellow Philosopher in my Music.

    See You In The Shadows…

You are certainly welcome to put my song on your blog! And I really wanted to listen to your songs, but they weren't working in the player and I couldn't download them. I'll try again, though.
  •  musicsongwriter 3 months ago
"@musicsongwriter Do you mind if I host your song on my blog as an example of how one might build a song over a single chord?"
I'll be delighted John. Thank you very much smile

Thanks for your comment on art deco dresser. It made me laugh, the power of music indeed. good luck on the goal of mixing a song a month post fawm. Sounds ambitious. The blog is really cool too.
  •  kidd 3 months ago
yeah im in! if you send an mp3 to my email, i can throw it onto cakewalk and overdub. thats the only way i know how to do it, then send you the results back etc. sound good?
  •  kidd 3 months ago
sure did man, I wouldnt know how to do it any other way!!
  •  kidd 3 months ago
Hi John thanks for the nice comments. I love Wild Honey/Smiley Smile albums... my favourite Beach Boys period. I didnt use anything on the voice other than the reverb supplied with cakewalk and a tiny bit of compression.... just double tracked them. Im not that good at the technical bits!!
  •  kingwoodkowboy 3 months ago
Howdy John. "simple recordings of guitar and vocals". Now, that sounds like country to me. Welcome pardner, to FAWM 2012.
  • explodingmary 3 months ago
i narrowly avoided being an academic philosopher myself; love it, but teaching? not so much. what are your current areas of interest?

    oh, and Welcome to FAWM!

nice site, BTW-- you should post a link to it in the shameless self promotion forum.
