Artist Bio

Influences:   Americana, Country, Folk, Rock (John Prine, Neil Young, Jethro Tull, Gillian Welch)

2018 will be my 6th FAWM! I am more excited than ever to write some songs and listen to those of all my favorite FAWMers!
Every year I say this is the one where I'll release my first CD but still I do not seem to have the time to actually do it. Maybe this year will be the one! And actually, it will likely be a couple of albums because I have some country stuff and some rock stuff that don't play well together! Here are several songs that will be on the CDs!

Heartbreak Apropos

The Fire and The Rain

Lost in Rain

I Don't Know Where We Went Wrong

In The House (We Set On Fire)

Hold On (With Every Thing You've Got)

Burn the Ground

Paper Flowers

Taking Me Down

Just Passing Through

Burn it Down

Holding On To Our Dreams (Coming Back)

All I Wanna Do (Is Be With You)
I live in the Chicago area, previously from the San Francisco Bay area and originally from western Kentucky! I love John Prine and Led Zeppelin, Hank Williams and Sia and Lorde and Eminem, Gillian Welch and Pink Floyd and Foo Fighters, New Grass Revival and Yes, Neil Young and Jethro Tull, Dolly and Taylor and Gaga and Amy and Madonna and Tammy, Willie and Waylon and Hank and Johnny and Merle and George, Elvis and Pearl Jam, the Jackson 5 and Michael, Prince and Jimi, the early Beatles and the later Beatles! There is very little music I don't like!

I use Reaper on Windows for my DAW. I record mostly with a Zoom H4n handheld digital recorder using its multi-track mode so I can easily record multiple tracks.

I play acoustic guitar, electric guitar, tenor guitar, baritone guitar, resonator guitar, fiddle, mandolin, banjo and harmonica.

We are free to joke in earnest now... πŸ˜‰

  • @zecoop  Mar 20

    <wink wink> - I hear ya... πŸ˜‰

  • @scottlake  Mar 20

Ironically enough the first email alert I got from FAWM through the RSS router service was from you!

  • @scottlake  Mar 19

You forgot the RSS feed for comments. I can’t copy paste it due to my mobile browser, but it works year round.

  • @gslade Mar 2

Yes, I love Pink. That bit is rap indeed. You can tell how she starts delivering along to the beat and not singing as in the rest of the song. Pink is awesome though.

You can get my email off of my profile and shoot me any ideas you have on working together. I'm looking to stay active this year. Can't have any more three year breaks.

  • @gslade Mar 2

So as far as "In The End" goes, as the album title indicates, it's a hybrid of rock and rap. There are parts of the song that are legit rap delivery, but the song itself leans more towards being rock. Hope that makes sense.

  • @dani312 Mar 2

Thanks for your kind comments on Home on Earth! Much appreciated!

  • @sapient  Mar 1

Well, now there's an idea... 😎

  • @sapient  Mar 1

I just read your comment! Wow... That's such a compliment coming from you πŸ˜ƒ
I did a couple others like it this FAWM, if you're curious: A Spark In The Black Sky, and The Saint of Killers. The collab with Captain Vulpine was leaning in that direction too, until he got his paws on it πŸ˜‰

  • @dorit Feb 27

Thank you for checking out my music. You got so much done this month! Congrats! I will be going through your tracks πŸ˜€ So far loved your collab with Sapient!

  • @coolparadiso  Feb 27

I will listen with interest to your album songs as soon as the dust settles and i finish the music to that crazy skirmish time when i did about 15 sets of lyrics, Im particularly attracted to β€œin the house β€œ (we set on fire). I love it when the brain goes. Oo. Ooooooo as it sees the change in context the last few words make.

  • @lieke Feb 27

Thanks so much for your comment, and congrats on the win! that's awesome!

  • @quork  Feb 27

Hey, thanks for your great comment on "What the Band Saw".

  • @johncrossman  Feb 27

Hiya, good sir, congrats on a solid 14. You are a fawm champion and a champion of fawm!
I demoed a tune from earlier if you're interested in a listen, tickle your ears here:

Fawm on, fellow John! Hey, I'm going to try to coin that phrase. Now to go find all the other Johns on the site and tell them about it.... πŸ˜€

  • @oneslowtyper  Feb 27

Hi again John, if you grabbed Last Roundup, the melody is totally up to you.
I had the song "Turn The Page" in mind when I wrote the verses with 6 lines instead of the normal 4 lines... but in the short time I've known you, I never heard a song I didn't like, so my choice would be in the style of John Staples, you may have heard of him. LOL

  • @oneslowtyper  Feb 27

Way to go John, you crossed the finish line with some really nice songs to add to your collection!
I've already pretty much put down my pen, but if you were thinking of scratching out another song or two, your vocals were exactly what I had in my head when I wrote "Last Roundup". No worries, if you're already focused on other things.

  • @corinnecurcio  Feb 25

Hi John - Sure, I can be part of the Sunday Skirmish- Is there a link to my slot, or do I have to make one? Thanks!

  • @cairobraga Feb 25

thanks, dear! I'm so nervous and excited coz it's the first time I'm hosting a skirmish. I'm already freaking out about what can I bring to the prompt, hahahaha.

  • @spingo  Feb 24

My album should be "Music for your wife to shake her head at."

    Thanks for the kind words!

  • @famouspatrick  Feb 24

Thanks for the nice comment on my "Sidelines" skirmish song. It's a semi-true song about my grandson.

  • @cynthiawolff  Feb 24

Your song, On the Sideline written during a skirmish no less, took my breath away...
what a fabulous song John...congratulations you must be
    dead chuffed...

  • @andygetch  Feb 23

Thx for organizing the mega super skirmish dude!

  • @standup  Feb 21

AAAAH yes. The Super Six. You had one. Not quite as heavy and inconvenient as an Ampeg SVT, but in the ballpark for sure. I played with a guitarist who had one. You think a Twin is loud? Hold my beer.

  • @sunnymae  Feb 19

Wow John..thank you. I'm kind of sitting here in a heap of tears. Just overwhelmed with Grace. What we get to do is so enormous. I'm spent in the most glorious of ways. I appreciate you dropping by and listening to Among the Roses. I feel Beyond blessed.

  • @jibbidy34  Feb 19

Ah gees - good spot! I’ve mostly been ok with my huge undertaking of the Centurion Army; not making mistakes. Occasionally someone slips through the net. Haha - sorry John. Will do!!

  • @jibbidy34  Feb 18

Oh my goodness Dupletarion Warrior you are AWESOME!! You took the time to write 200 comments and listen to all those songs! Thanks for your hefty contribution to our community. You have 200 thank you’s from your fellow FAWMers and from me! Excellent work and keep busting’ those zongs!!

  • @sunnymae  Feb 18

Would love to do a collab with you John. Let me know how you like it to go. I've been wanting to do more and I absolutely was going to ask you out on a writing date so here we are.:0)

  • @wistah  Feb 17

Thanks John! I appreciate your feedback πŸ˜€

  • @jibbidy34  Feb 17

Thank you so much for your amazingly kind words on 'Fire Pig' 😁 It really just fell out of my half asleep brain this morning...

  • @sunnymae  Feb 17

I thought you'd never ask my dear!
Please please have a go at my lyrics. I would be absolutely honored. I was going to ask you if you wanted to collab at some point. This is a great place to start. You have my blessings.πŸ€—πŸ€—

  • @tunecat  Feb 17

Thanks for the lovely comment. I've posted the music.

  • @scubed  Feb 17

  • @acousticmaddie  Feb 16

Thank you so much for your kind words on Scars. <3

  • @sunnymae  Feb 15

I'm so glad you're hosting another prompt tomorrow John. I'm really looking forward to it. Never got to complete last weeks. Hopefully the groups combined creative energy will ignite my inner dialogueπŸ€— Definitely in that Midway slump.

  • @oneslowtyper  Feb 15

Thanks again John, for your kind words and opinions. I truly value the critiques of someone I consider to be supremely talented!

  • @spinhead  Feb 15

Your comment on "Here Before" made my day. I've been bleak as the weather, but as soon as I finished that demo I knew I felt better. Glad it hit you in the right place.

  • @corinnelucy  Feb 13

Thank you SO much for your comment on White Foam! 😁

  • @brrrse  Feb 12

I wanted to stop by and say thank you for speaking up. I appreciate you.

  • @skittycat  Feb 11

Thanks for the comments on "Never Saw it Coming" πŸ˜€
What can I say? Sometimes these things just write themselves LOL x

  • @famouspatrick  Feb 10

Thanks for the nice comment on my skirmish song, "The Face."

  • @johnhudome  Feb 10

John, I missed your Skirmish because I was at Urgent Care center last night. I have influenza A.

  • @angelinapowersuit Feb 10

Hi John! Indeed, I'm back! You give me a lot to catch up on πŸ˜€

  • @vegansongs  Feb 10

Thanks John- I knew I wanted to write one this year for my Grandaughter- The skirmish prompt was what I needed. Your Chariot Awaits is so her and I! I wrote one last FAWM for my Grandson called Why Why Why. I was with them last night and they asked me to sing Pillow Planet- another from last year! FAWM is the BEST!

  • @hoppiern  Feb 8

Lol sorry I hit send twice!! I am the opposite of coordinated lol

  • @hoppiern  Feb 8

Thanks so much for your kind comments on my song. 😊

  • @hoppiern  Feb 8

Thanks so much for your kind comments on my song. 😊

  • @sunnymae  Feb 8

Thank you brother John for your ever encouraging comments on "This ship has Sailed." Your well wishes inspired me so I wrote a song It's called breathe. One of your lines is in there about the Shadows soon becoming pleasant memories. Thank you for the impromptu skirmish!

  • @bradbrubaker  Feb 7

I actually recorded a full band treatment of "Walrus Love Song" saying we should get it sounding Marvin Gaye-level sexy. It is wonderful and bizarre and even features a female "walrus." It's not out yet (still being mixed with my upcoming EP), but wanted to share. 😁 Recorded at Minbal in Chicago, if you know it.

  • @cindyrella  Feb 7

Thanks for your comments on my Trump song. I just had to write something or explode! πŸ˜€

  • @johnhudome  Feb 7

Hi John, If I want to participate in the Skirmish you're hosting Friday, 2/09, at 8:00 PM EST, where would I look to get the prompt? I'm non- committal. Might be a dinner. But if here, I want to do it.

  • @jibbidy34  Feb 7

Congratulations Centurion Soldier! You wrote 100 comments for your fellow FAWMers!! You made this place even better. You took your time to listen to other people's songs and you have 100 thank you's from all of them and from me! Here’s your badge. Excellent work and keep busting’ those zongs!!

  • @mkd  Feb 7

Thank you for your kind words on Hurt Song! The upset children sounds seem to either disturb the listener or bring about a real nostalgia for them! (I’m glad for you it was the latter!)

I think if you’ve β€œbeen there” then you appreciate how frequent these occurrences are and how quickly they’re moved past too. Probably hard to have an entire song focus on them without being able to hear the next track to move beyond the moment... guess I better make sure the next one is a cheery one!

  • @tootoobee  Feb 7

Thank you for listening and commenting on Hide My Mask πŸ˜€ Was the first time I used Kinetic Treats in a song. I started off with the Giant (my favorite) but noticed that the song needs some queer twist. πŸ˜‰

  • @benjo  Feb 6

Hey John thank for your kind words on little sister means so much coming from you

  • @karlsburg25  Feb 6

Cheers john for your ever insightful and wonderful comments. Glad that tickled your ear in a good way πŸ˜‰

  • @mattpierce  Feb 6

You gave the most awesomest comment sir!
    Thank you!

  • @colgoo  Feb 6

In a FB group for Mormons who are transitioning out of the church, I posted my song on the Weeds the other day and asked if anyone is friends....a friend has been contacted to share the song with them.

    Thank you for asking!

  • @mccannrs Feb 6

Thanks for checking out my demo on Skip Biscuit! Who knows, maybe I'll continue the story in a future episode!

  • @treble  Feb 6

John, thank you for your kind comments on my skirmish song I Never Saw it Coming (getting old.) You provided such a great prompt that the lyrics just flowed.

  • @writeandwrong  Feb 6

John, thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your enlightening comment on "Happy Freaky." Yes, the snake has visited the hen house again and the hen couldn't be any happier...but move on she must to a new world and new experiences. Can't wait to see what's in store next for this freakin' happy hen!

  • @tamsnumber4 Feb 5

Thanks for listening to my song "Karma", always appreciate your supportive and positive comments John! Looks like I have lots of listening to do, I'll be back!!

  • @unkept Feb 4

Thanks for listening to my song "Never Saw Me Coming" based on your prompt John, it's because of you that it exists! You'll have to live with that. lol

  • @helene Feb 3

    Welcome back!

  • @mccannrs Feb 3

Hey man, thanks for the great comment! I uploaded the demo for the track, if you were still interested!

  • @skylermf Feb 3

Thanks for the nice comment on my skirmish song! πŸ˜€

  • @vegansongs  Feb 3

Hi John, Thanks for your kind comment on my skirmish song, Love Coming> That was fun!

  • @kathym  Feb 3

I have had a busy couple of days between the day job and we had our monthly Folk Fridays event tonight, so I wasn't able to join the skirmish. My laptop was running updates so I finally got my skirmish set up and ready to go for the morning.
I'm off to bed shortly but looking forward to getting things going in the morning. I might just get lyrics up in the morning until I get my mic setup going, but I got the file hosting.
Thanks for doing such a terrific job getting things up and running!

  • @aprilm  Feb 3

Thanks John. Spies and Lies really reflects my fears. Can a hero please swoop down now?

  • @aprilm  Feb 3

Thanks John! I enjoyed doing the percussion on Temporary. It is something I've been wanting to try. I am so glad you enjoyed it! I think it's one I will go back and polish up the vocals after FAWM!

  • @bhaile  Feb 2

Thanks, John! You always give such thoughtful feedback. I’m looking forward to hearing more of your songs this month πŸ˜€

  • @writeandwrong  Feb 2

Well, whatever you come up with, it's gonna be a doozy, and I can't wait to hear it! lolol

  • @writeandwrong  Feb 2

LMFAO!!! OMFG!!! I'm crying laughing!!!! HAHA! I hope he is the inspiration of your hit tarot song!!! LOLOL!!!

  • @cindyrella  Feb 2

    Thanks John!

  • @stevenwesleyguiles  Feb 2

@johnstaples LOL. I think I'M a fourteen year old girl TOO!
I'll tell you what, I keep learning every day. And a lot of what I do I get told is recycled 90s stuff. So, I'm working my way to the 2000s too. πŸ˜€

But one of my secrets is compression. And then I add more compression. And then I compress it some more.

Seriously. That may be my biggest secret. I compress every channel individually, probably at least two different compressors on different settings.

Then I master a track with even more compression.

When I do the first set I try and make sure all of my main levels (for my initial first great mix) are actually in the -12 -6 range. Then I master THAT final mix using Ozone and just crushing it real good.

  • @mom23gals  Feb 1

Thank you so much for listening to and commenting on The Puzzle. It feels like a good start. πŸ˜€

  • @krayzie003  Feb 1

Thanks for your comment on "Down To The Ocean." I'm glad you like it.

  • @stevenwesleyguiles  Feb 1

@johnstaples Ha! Tell your wife thank you for the kind words! πŸ˜€
That song is the result of several things: 1-Working with Amanda several years, 2-Having all my templates and mics set up specifically for making the sweet rock. Plus, I dialed in plugins AND EQ for my set up, so, it gets the mix pretty damn close without too much work on my part (other than the years of perfecting my templates...). 3 - Working with Amanda. πŸ˜€

  • @dannyk1 Feb 1

Hey John, thanks for the wonderful comment on Brutal Seduction. As far as the part about growing up goes, you are fully grown and a very accomplished lyricist plus, you play and sing. I aspire to be more like you.

  • @bithprod Feb 1

Darn, John... don't make me blush! πŸ˜‰ Thank you for your kind and generous words.

  • @writeandwrong  Feb 1
