Bio

Been writing for a while (15 years), never attempted this kind of thing. I play in a few bands, do solo cover bar shows, recorded one extremely lo-fi disc in 2003(?) but been mostly un-recorded since then.
I've been trying to record a bunch of my songs for a CD for like a year now, and I'm just getting stuck and frustrated - def making too big a deal out if it. I think this is going to help me just 'let go' a little and have fun with the process of writing and recording again.
There are some free downloads on my bandcamp page if anyone is interested, and lots of demos on my soundcloud page.

Yeah, Jon and I tried to do something together about 5-6 years ago. Clearly, it didn't work out. Probably too big an age difference big_smile .
  • steveodell 3 months ago
thank you for your kind comment for "blind fish" i havent really come up with a melody as yet, its just a bassline for now but i hope to revise it soon.
  • benbousquet 3 months ago
Your songs have a very laid back vibe to them, and really crisp guitar work. Good luck finishing off your first FAWM.

Thanks for the feedback on The Misemployed. The fiddle was programmed using RealTracks. BTW, I can't seem to get any response from anyone on anything I post on the BSA Facebook page so I think I'll abandon posting stuff there.

No worries! I've been finding that the more I push myself to write the easier it becomes - although my good to bad ratio is still firmly in bads favour currently!
  • seantwright 3 months ago
adding you to my watch list, Joe. great find!
  •  joetime 3 months ago
Music for 9... an interesting mix of layered percussion and a rock-a-billy song structure. Kind of Paul Simon meets Buddy Holly.

I started with the percussion, which I've never done.
  • eyeseaewe 3 months ago
Really enjoying your stuff, you've got a really effortlessly nice (to me at least) voice and I cannot get enough of all the harmonies, the production is flawless.
  • hardenborg 3 months ago
thanx for your comment, agree on dropping "like".
  •  joetime 3 months ago
Music for 8. My Morning Jacket-y. I'm cool with that. I think its all the reverb.
  • wolfkier 3 months ago
Yep, that's what I'm saying. Just like any worthwhile human endeavor, it should build steadily and with some momentum to a lovely satisfying climax smile
Gotta make you wanna roll over and have a cigarette when it's done!

Music for 7, and a lyrical hook... trying to write a (ugh) love song for my wife for valentienes day... she gets home at 5... can I do it?
  •  joetime 3 months ago
I've got music for 6. Blatant Badly Drawn Boy rip off. But I figure not enough people are ripping him off, so I have just cause.

This experience has been crazy so far. I keep hitting walls and then getting past them. This morning I was so bummed that I'd never be able come up with anything, and then bam, there it is. I'm not saying this is the best stuff I've ever done, but I'm def moving into new territory.

It's a whole different approach to songwriting; there's no judgement, no criticism until the thing is done. Then its ok to use a more discerning eye. The process is what's important. The quality of the product will vary, but every cycle brings new insight, new knowledge for the next effort.

    Rock on.

Just had a thought, Joe. It would be interested to hear Katie sing my "Always a Moment" sometime. A strong voice like hers would be cool on it. Just a thought...
  • wolfkier 3 months ago
much better, I'd still lift the lead vocal some 3-5%, maybe try out a few different light chorus effects to get the vocal W-I-D-E-R in the stereo mix. I'm no certified expert either really, but trial and error is the only way to learn. Someone who cares will tell you when you've gone too far. Nicely, if you're lucky smile
    Have a great day.
    wolf.

yeah, the teeniest bit on the master track, (so it's over everything and gives a sense that it's all echoing in one room) but try other stuff too, depending on what your DAW has available.. Practice makes perfect.
I'm glad it helped. Let me know when you've played with it and I'll look back in sometime later.

No clue where 5 is coming from yet...
  •  joetime 3 months ago
lyrics for 4 ready, gonna get recording!
It's really crazy how things just fall into place sometimes... wait for the liner notes...
  •  joetime 3 months ago
oh man getting backed up... 3 still needs to be mixed and 4 has music and I'm really close on the lyrics.
I guess that's a good problem to have
  •  joetime 3 months ago
