Bio

2012! Bring it on!

Hi. I'm John. Husband to a patient wife. Father to four great girls. Songwriter/Performer. Drummer/Percussionist. Producer and engineer at Rocket Boy Records. Sometime slacker. This is FAWM #4 for me. Have never "won" yet. Managed to get a bunch of "keepers" that past three years, though. Maybe this is the year I go 14, errr... 14.5. smile

If you're ever in the Detroit/Ann Arbor area, please look me up. I'd love to get together with fellow FAWMers to pick a bit or share a show.

Write on,
John

By the way, my duo, The Potter's Field, released our debut album in October. A few of the songs on this release are songs I wrote for FAWM. Give it a listen (for free) or purchase one (or three) if you're so inclined.

Hi there - Greetings from Southwest Michigan! So glad I came across your songs on the Jukebox... really great stuff and wonderful sounds. The band I am in is hoping to come down to the Detroit area at some point, as the guitar player is from Eastpointe. Perhaps we'll run into each other somewhere down there. Looking forward to hearing some more songs; you are now on my watchlist. smile

Hi John! My band and I are in the Detroit/Ann Arbor area all the time! We like making friends... www.ataverage.com. I'm the violinist, they only let me write songs in February, but nathanschleicher is in charge and he's hanging around FAWM too. Took a listen to some of your songs on your website; I really like your sound and writing. smile

Hiya, John! I am curious about recording the mandolin. I seem to be using it a lot lately. I'm using the GarageBand software with low end single channel USB interface, so I can only record one channel at a time... but I use a decent condenser mic with a tube pre-amp and phantom power (it's probably a shame to pipe it all through the crappy interface). My main question for you is what kind of compressor and equalizer settings seem to work best for the mandolin. I suppose it depends on the context of the arrangement, but I'm still curious about how to get the best sound out of my set up. I'd appreciate any advice you have.... maybe we should even start a thread in the forums and share the wealth... Looking forward to hearing the rest of your FAWM!

hi! i just listened to Don't Look Down, very nice. I loved the crispy sound of the recording, too. the song itself sounds lovely though and it's a perfect choice of voices, instruments, and when to have them playing/not playing too. Definitely agree it's an excellent song. well done. I particularly enjoyed hearing the north american style mandolin so prominently but not overpoweringly.

Pleasureville is a pretty well done CD -- congrats. I listened to a few and sampled the rest -- I do have work to do today (ha, ha). I hope to get a CD out this year, although my singing will never approach yours (or my mixing skills!).
