Bio

I first picked up a ukulele in July 2010 with my first song emerging from the recesses of my brain in November of that same year. Since then I have written 70+ songs, in no small part due to my friend kiwafruit introducing me to 50/90 last year - and what a rush that was!

My main focus at the moment is my duo, The Whiskey Archive, but I also perform with a ukulele trio, The Ukuladies (and yes kiwafruit is one of us!) and do solo gigs as well.

I'm not expecting to make the 14.5 song target for FAWM as I have a fair bit on my plate performance-wise at the moment and am also trying to prep for recording The Whiskey Archive's debut EP. So the upshot is my presence on here may be a bit sporadic...still looking forward to it though!

Happy FAWMing everyone! smile

lol - Tim, now why would I need a custard tart when I have a chivalrous Downburst leaping to my defence?

Rod that's my actor background leaking through I'm afraid - it's always got to be character driven for me, I think...or at least narrative driven.

And I'm afraid Tim that it's that same acting background, and more specifically my background with Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre and their self-devised works (which usually involve a collision of the contemporary with a heightened ritualistic aesthetic) that makes me less concerned with consistency of low, middle and high english and more interested in the flavour and dynamic that comes from particular words and phrases. I kind of like the juxtaposition of different styles of language - it's what I'm used to working with I guess. smile
  •  timfatchen 3 months ago
No, don't _want_ a particular approach to lyrics. I'll happily accept (and try to write) what we could call Low, Middle and High English, depending on the purpose. But I get a bit jarred when an odd High construction seems to have snuck in to a Middle lyric, and I will say so. At times this really ends in my embarrassment, as with "not soon forgotten" which turns on dialect, not usage. "...two countries separated by the gulf of a common language" tho' I think I've misquoted that. wink

@downburst contortions? Serves @downburst right. I'm still trying to set Sidney Lanier...one-count-'em-one success so far.

(Don't mind this chatroom developing on your soundboard Jane, just keep writing this interesting stuff! Feel free to throw a custard tart in selfdefence too!)

Really, Tim? It sounds like you want a really vernacular approach to lyrics, which is fine, but surely there's room for a more... "literary" style. Ravages, sublime, embers, unraveled all suggest to me connections with the larger world English poetry. And, really, this isn't Milton--they're pretty modest deviations from pop conventions, no? I set an Emily Dickinson poem to music, and you couldn't imagine the contortions her language put me through.

You're welcome, Jane. I'm so impressed with your stuff--it's miles away from what I think of as "ukulele music." Your recent songs that I've heard are so... dramatic. I don't mean "theatrical"--I mean it feels as if each song comes from a character, and is emotionally true to that. And your singing is so good--there's such restraint that little shifts of mood sound large.
  •  timfatchen 3 months ago
heh I was going to mention ravages but thought three _wouldn't_ be the charm wink I'll give you "not soon forgotten" and raise you on "once did"!
