Artist Bio

my name is Denys. i record music as isaac quatorze. my intent whenever i sit at my work station is to make the catchiest pop song you ever heard. results vary.

fawm 2007 - joined, wrote 14 songs, released 12 of them on an album. the album was poppy and weird in equal measure, and can still be streamed at the bandcamp link above.

fawm 2008 - another successful fawm, where i experimented with genres outside my comfort zone (reggae, acapella, french expressionist, and acoustic confessional) while still making a half-dozen twisted pop songs.

fawm 2009 - tragedy struck, every fawmer's nightmare. i had written 6 songs, including 2 of my all-time favourites, and collaborations with Tim Wille, Nancy Rost, Face of Einstein and Scott McBride, when my hard drive became corrupted and I lost everything. only the initial demo mp3s survived, and my fawm was curtailed.

fawm 2010 - made only 3 songs this feb. a fully sample-based cousin of House of the Rising Sun, a seductive jazz number and a piece of forgettable riff-rock pap.

fawm 2011 - i only wrote 6 songs this fawm, but in my mind it was my most successful year yet, as the songs formed a cohesive EP that came very close to nailing the disjointed pop statement i'd been aiming at for ages.

fawm 2012 thru 2014 - dealing with a personal loss as well as another music-related project, i did not fawm for these years.

fawm 2015 - well this was a weird one. i fawmed my f*cken face off. ended up with only 8 songs, but they dug deep. this was the first year i wrote 100% personal songs, and shit got dark, dark, dark. i exorcised years worth of grief and regret in those tunes, and if the results were less than poppy they definitely broadened my musical palette.

fawm 2016 - another curtailed year. my fawm ended after only 1 song, but i'm hoping for 2017 to be the one that redeems the decade for me.

I think 'semantimacy' wins as FAWM song of the year for me dude!

  • @drewb92  Mar 3

Hey, thanks for the kind comment on Icebreaker! The vocal processing is mostly just a strong high pass on Logic Pro’s built-in EQ, with a big hall convolution reverb (processed with Waves IR-L). And on the more subtle side, there was a vintage compressor (Waves, forget the model) and a stereo delay (also Waves) that I made sound as tapey and analog as possible.

So a Pop song next year, eh? I'm up for that. I enjoyed your songs this year & really enjoyed the collab. Glad we finally did it!

I hope your FAWM was great! I left a post in the Midwest: Twin Cities forum, to see if anybody wants to get together for an After-FAWM party. Reply there if you want to do it! (If you're gonna be in the neighborhood.)

  • @judypie Feb 25

Haha awesome! Not sure it's the most relaxing song to ease you into a slumber but cool thanks 😀

  • @candle Feb 22

    Posted. Already got a comment.

  • @candle Feb 21

Love what you did with the collab so far. I think I've got one more idea to try & then maybe we can see if it's ready for mass consumption (unless you feel it needs something else).

Oh, and I figured out what I missed. Saw a post on Facebook this morning (I know, I was actually logged into my account for like a minute, amazing, right?) Congrats to you & @blueshirt!

Ha I saw your instagram comment... the short answer is I've been neglecting my "real" job - but surely there's more to life than "making money" right??

  • @caterwauler  Feb 7

Thank you so much for your kind words on @candle's tribute to Mojo, and for your lovely comments.
"i feel like you are one of the very few fawmers who is writing with all 5 senses" That's really a wonderful compliment. Hyper-accute hearing has tremendously changed my musical approach ; I need to associate sounds with other perceptions to understand them. Glad you felt it.

  • @ryako  Feb 7

Thanks for your super nice comment! Will I be singing all the characters myself? Hmm, I don't know, actually. I'll probably have to find some dudes with musical theater-esque voices to do parts. But I'll probably try to write and play everything out first before I start asking people for vocals(if anyone's even interested...not everyone likes this genre).

  • @calumcarlyle Feb 7

Thanks for your kind words on that a capella song of mine. I took it as a nice vote of confidence, in fact.

  • @js6  Feb 7

Isaac, thank you for your many heartwarming comments 😀

  • @jacobmorales  Feb 7

@isaacq Thanks for the feedback on "Speed Away." You caught that Beatles reference! Nice! I'm glad you liked the track.

  • @stevenwesleyguiles  Feb 7

@isaacq Dude, I can't thank you enough for all of your kind words! So encouraging. I'm glad you like "This Is How You Do It". Probably the only additions I'd add (if any) are some bass and a few harmonies.

I usually don't mess with my arrangements too much. Honestly, I SUCK at actually "releasing" my songs after recording them. I have a backlog of...a lot of songs. 😀

I may need to spend some time and just put a ton of them up on bandcamp. 😀

Again, I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the song love. 😀

  • @nancyrost  Feb 7

Beware of loans that are approved that easily; they're bound to come back to bite you in a future episode!

  • @dragondreams  Feb 6

Thanks for your great comment, Denys. 😊

  • @candle Feb 6

I'm loving your output thus far. Keep it up. The world needs more of your great music. As for @mojo, we're all going to miss him, but I'm glad @caterwauler is continuing to create her music & her amazing world. Thanks for your ever-appreciated comments on my own creativity, mon ami.

  • @stephenwordsmith Feb 6

Thank you so much for the demo. It's amazing, and you've shown a real understanding and sensitivity to the lyric that I don't always see come through in lyrics-first collaborations. I hope this has energised you to create more works of art.

  • @faceofeinstein  Feb 5

    You're much too kind sir!
    Thank you.

  • @joshbelville  Feb 5

Hey good point. I emailed you BPMs.

  • @candle Feb 4

That would probably work best for e-mail. I'm looking forward to what you come up with.

  • @joshbelville  Feb 3

  • @joshbelville  Feb 2

    esteemed mr. quatorze,

i was thinking of writing a song using all the random muse elements. like, random title, random structure, using words from the lyricloud. make a beat, put some stuffs over it. the theme of the song can be the week one theme, "dreams." we can take turns writing lyrics. just make it weird and cool!

  • @candle Feb 2

    That works for me.

  • @rosedeschamps  Feb 1

"The day "light moaning" becomes workplace-inappropriate is the day i resign!"

I feel like I should cross-stitch that beautifully.

  • @candle Feb 1

Do you want to put a song together & I can add some colour - or we could do it the other way round. I write something & you add your touch to it? What do you think?

  • @downburst  Feb 1

Did you remember to back up your youth? Probably not. *sigh*

Dang, who was it then? Sorry for the mixup.

  • @downburst  Feb 1

Hey, was it you that was trying to recover songs from a previous FAWM? Get back to me.

  • @natchdan  Feb 1

Thank you! I've added the lyrics now - I was in a hurry to get it up (huh hu huh)

  • @nancyrost  Feb 1

Ah, the NSFW is for a previous Derek song, I think. I'll take it off Derek 4. Only light moaning in this one. 😀

I'm totally with you on that alternate universe!

Will e-mail you soon about some collab stuff ....

  • @candle Feb 1

We should collab this year. I think we talked briefly about it last year. We should make a point now. Who knows what will happen if we combine my experimental craziness with your creativity & pop sensibilities? Anything could happen… Thoughts?

  • @freakingsnap Feb 1

    Is it February yet?

  • @mikedebenham  Jan 31

    Hooray!

I vote for fawming one's f*cken face off. Faces grow back, right?

  • @natchdan  Jan 31

Thank you so much for reminding me of Sin Of The Summer. I used to have it on my old mp3 player which died a sad death, and now I'm listening to all these songs and remembering how much I love them all. You really hit FAWM hard. Deja Vu, File Folder and Horrocious are all influential to me to this day.

  • @expendablefriend Jan 30

May your decade be redeemed in style by the most thunderous waterfall of catchy pop songs that mankind has ever witnessed!

(Goes without saying that I am excited to hear what you get up to this month...)

  • @candle Jan 30

Always looking forward to your creative genius, mon ami.
