_____

Halfpenny Orchestra is Bret Rooks and Ryan Miller, who both live in San Luis Obispo, California.

One is a journalist and one is an engineer.
One plays piano and one plays guitar.
One is slightly cooler than the other.
You make the call.

This year's challenge for us: Um, write as many songs as we can while not ignoring our respective wives or daughters.

Thanks for the comment on Heartburn. I think it's the best song I've written for a while actually.
Who'd think I'd be grateful for being sick the other day?
  •  Billy Chase 20 hours ago
Thanks for the Loteria drawing. I've been writing some surf tunes lately and "El Camaron - The Shrimp, No. 30" will fit right in.

    I'm looking forward to this.

Hey another Reaper-er ! May the scythe be with you ... smile
  • Jeff C. 4 days ago
Haha! ARCE? I thought I was the only one. ARCE, class of 1986. I took a guitar class my senior year because I needed an elective.....and that's how it all starts.

I do find it interesting how people perceive engineers. "You're an engineer....and a musician? And a comedian? I thought engineers were too straight laced for those kinds of things." Apparently, there are at least two of us with right brain/left brain capacities, huh?
  • Jeff C. 5 days ago
Wait, one of you aren't a structural engineer, are you? That'd be serendipitous. Or something. 'Cuz I went to Poly and I am a structural engineer.
  • Ant Lion 5 days ago
Great, thanks for the challenge, excited to have this inspiration! I think I'm going to have to make this one a collaboration with my cello-playing friend. smile
  • Pear?! I didn't even know there was such a card!

But... I... I'll write the hell out of that song! Pears are going to wish they never existed when I finish with 'em!
...Or perhaps they'll become a proud and boisterous fruit, I suppose there's really only one way to find out.
  • Jeff C. 5 days ago
SLO? I went to college in SLO.....just a "couple" of years ago. It's a great place. Anyway, thanks for the Death card. I'll see what I can do with it. Death of innocence? Death of taste? Death of....death? Wow, this might more difficult than I thought. I'm gonna have to see where this takes me. Hopefully not to the grave. Haha!
  • Who?! Wha?! What's all this about? I want to play! *runs in circles*

Thanks for organising the Loteria picks. Apart from mine containing the mysterious Number 23, the Moon is always something cool to write about... I'll get right on it!
  •  Jharms 1 week ago
    YES! Thanks!
  •  Corinne Curcio 1 week ago

  •  orinoco 1 week ago
Ooh, a ladder. OK. I could do a metaphorical ladder, but that might be too easy - I'll try and write a song about an actual ladder, if I can smile Thanks for having me on board!
  • greenambit 1 week ago
Huh, funky challenge. I'll have to see what I can do. Thanks!
  •  Karan 1 week ago
This is fun indeed! I have written a "heart song" just now. But I may well become hooked on the subject and do another one; we shall see...
  •  Potato 1 week ago

  •  isaac quatorze 1 week ago
thank you, Loteria dealer! we should see if we can get everybody to put "loteria" as one of the tags so these songs can be easily called up. sorry if that's already been suggested!
  •  Jim Koman 1 week ago
Hey, just noticed you guys sent me a message back in January! Sorry I failed to notice it. Nice to find there are Fawmers in SLO. While this isn't my first time signing up for FAWM, this is the first time I'm going to force myself to complete it. I look forward to hearing what you guys produce!
  • stevekey 2 weeks ago
Did you hear from Ashley at New Times? She's doing a FAWM feature.
  • Errol 3 weeks ago
    Hi Bret!

I don't know if we talked about boardgames last year! Ya, I think I should your other half my boardgame closet. We were talking about boardgames in chat. I had to slow down on boardgames when my youngest was born. I used to have a boardgame night every week, but then I stopped about 5 years ago because of the little one. Now, I've restarted boardgame night one a month. Great fun!
  •  Nancy Rost 3 weeks ago
Can't wait for "Took a Bath in Buford".
  •  Jharms 3 weeks ago
Thanks for the recording tips-- and Wailing Wall is pretty cool, too.
  •  Jharms 3 weeks ago
OK, I should try them. I've listened to DM Stith and Son Lux from the remixes they did to My Brightest Diamond, but I haven't listened to their solo stuff. I also like Half-Handed Cloud, who's from the Asthmatic Kitty Label. And I just found David Bazan (or Pedro the Lion) recently, who writes a lot about theodicies/ anti-theodicies.
  •  Jharms 3 weeks ago
Hey, thanks! I've been trying to find stuff like Bifrost out there (Christian/Indie), but haven't been too successful. Do you have any suggestions?

And I love your influences as well! I was just rocking out to Spoon last week, and Ben Folds is one of my biggest inspirations as far as lyricists go. Not sure how I missed him...
