Bio

Live on a small farm in the middle of Arkansas. We got critters of all shapes and sizes and I use their antics a lot in my writing. I write lyrics, poetry, short stories ... and such. I play with several bands and I play guitar, bass, and mandolin. I can write the musical lines for most instruments, but my musical stuff is so simplistic and takes me so long to do, that it would be better for a real composer to take my lyrics on.

But on another note ... I can write lyrics to existing melody. Need a hand anyone? It might be the only way I can get some sounds on the board to go along with my lyrics I may end up writing a whole bunch of lyrics ... but I sure would like to leave here in Mar with some (oh ... 14 and 1/2 or so) complete songs on the board

I'm am impressed/inspired by your success and understanding of happiness. I've been struggling in the job market for three years now, but have tried to keep my chin up with my creative endeavors. Not that those don't get frustrating sometimes, too. My best friend and I were just tossing around the idea of escaping the city (and it's mutated concept of success) and it sounds like you are living the type of life we had discussed.

Thank you for sharing your old lyrics....I so, so appreciate them. Just the other day I was in the last hour of a 7 hour car ride, at the end of my limited patience, and then passed by a truck loaded with chickens crammed in crates on their way to slaughter. I was beyond distressed. I wish I could channel my sentiments into songs as you have...you certainly have inspired me to try. My 1st FAWM I wrote an anti-dog fighting song when the whole Vick thing was in the news. Sigh...humans...what a disgrace we are. Thank goodness for people like you who make me feel less alone & more hopeful.

I'd list you as co-writer on the song. The lyrics are all yours. I think I only compressed the pacing and structure, but didn't change anything. So I'd list it as something like 'Lyrics: Duane Clancy, Music: Mark Dabney (me)'. If you have a website or blog or something, I'll link out to that, too. Sound reasonable?

Hi Duane, I get wrapped up and don't comment like I should either. I do have a tune in my head as I write, but dont play an instrament and I'm no singer. I've occasionally put up a vocal to show the irregular rhyme in my wordier ones cause folk can read 'em and not find 'em, but that's real embarrising for me to do ,but I tried on #19, added a link and those vox suck!

+ @timfatchen I don't know what I can add to Tim's wonderful rendition, but if I can get the music file sent to me so I can put it into garageband I'll give it a go. I'm absolutely ecstatic with the music and the way it all works together. Thank you so much for starting all the fun, your wonderful words, and for carrying the ball on this and letting me in on the game ) I'm going to go try to figure out how to repost, like you suggested. I know I can't just change the official collaborator because you are the only one who can do that.

In this effort I've had to insert "but" between the last two chorus lines (the music did that). Trying to persuade Muroidea (ee-AH) to rhyme with "day" was hard but I did it. And sorry, I ate the last line of verse 1, to "They'll understand, they'll be your own one" which is still not good but at least it scans, fits and _rhymes_!!!!

There is a time and a place for getting slapped down, too -- it just isn't here. You will also notice that here no one talks about copyrights, publishing, cuts, blah, blah, blah (OK, it does come up) and at those other sites, those topics are always big conversations. I guess the population at a "normal" site has more delusional dreamers, while here during february, every one is too busy "doing"!

However, you are not going to get much of a "critical" review here. Those other sites are better for that. I belong to http://www.jpfolks.com and I think it is a pretty good site.

You have HOW MANY songs??? FORTY-THREE??? Geez!!! I'm not sure why I've gotten more comments, but I have tried to comment on everyone's song in any skirmish that I've been in if I could find them, mostly immediately after I posted my stuff, so I guess I busted a lot of zongs. I don't expect them all to post on mine because a lot of them are rockers and just not into the kind of stuff I write. I try to be open minded and find something relevant to say even if it's not the kind of stuff I normally listen to. Some folks don't comment on lyrics only and it could be you are new, also. Some fawmers make it a point to reach out to fawmlings. Some of the folks who comment on my stuff are also people I know from the songwriters' retreat that we attend. I knew them there first but we all got recruited. ANYWAY, good for you with all of this stuff posted. I'll check some more out when I can, but now with the superskirmish behind us, I've got a bunch of nonfawm things to catch up on.

Hey Man! you're getting a lot of action going here. You're going to force me to stay awake all night again. I love the FAWM except for the lack of sleep. I have looked over a couple of you lyrics. You've got a good sense of form. That's really important. Too loose is hard to create melodies for.

Have you tried writing for an existing tune. Lot of people have trouble with that. I have the same trouble. but in reverse. I have a hard time writing tunes for existing lyrics.

Basically the LAST word in the last line of every six line stanza becomes the last word in the FIRST line of the next stanza. I'm not quite sure how/why the middle lines get arranged they way they do.

I had the words I thought I wanted to use all organized in word to map the thing out and started with "the envio" first to make sure I knew what I was aim towards. I think working from a familiar story helped a lot too.

For obvious reasons, posting 25 songs in seven days on a normal songwriting site just won't work. You just push everyone else's songs off of page one. Here, page 1 comes and goes so quickly it doesn't matter. Now some people do super feasts where they do 14 songs in 90 minutes!! They gets annoying when they post all of them at once. It is usually right after I post one (ha, ha). Enjoy the rest of the month and beyond.

Thanks for marking me as a colab. I finally got a serious look at Michaela... I like the lyrics better than I did the first time. The "twist" works. I am trying to figure out how to sing them, and struggling so far--can't figure out how to match them with the melody. Plus, I discovered I didn't write down the chords and can't remember them all, so I'm having to figure them out again (nothing complicated, it's mostly just E A B). I had a fairly frustrating last few days, but hopefully I'm back on task now, so I'll keep working on it.
