Bio

I'm just writing stuff in here so FAWM willl quit telling me "It looks like you are new this year."

--> http://www.joshharrison.net/oblique-strategies/ <--

Update: I've decided I suck and I'm boring. Oblique Strategies tells me "Go to an extreme, move back to a more comfortable place." So OK, having to change things up, make weird noises for a while.

"frantic, upbeat, strange and exciting!" --words to live by from @avidfanman. Also: sloppy!

2/14: I'm devoid of lyrical inspiration, coming up blank, can't finish songs. So I decided to try collabs for a while and immediately things started to click. Maybe I'm just not cut out to write lyrics (but I can, I really can! it's just so hard).

2/23: Too busy to record, but. sad I think I'll put a to-do list in here, @plainwhitetoast styley-style. Maybe it will kick my ass into gear.

* Exquisite corpse (in process)
* halfnhalf with Mr. Toast (in process)
* New Arthursong? Have it written, just need a chance to record [done!]

Mine, all mine:
* "Deleted Scene" (half recorded) [done]
* "Grind" (finishing lyrics)
* "Skin Brigade" (ditto)
* "I Saw You Shining" (ditto)
* "Six Bar Blues" (a different one)
* songs that are currently just music with no lyrical ideas, currently just called "wobble," "Algonac," "uoiuo," "Right You Are," and "Sleep Absorber"
* a bunch of collabs with @duaneclancy based on 5090 things

If I can even get part way through that list I will be a happy boy.

===
Post-mortem (yes, I'm dead now): Well, I didn't get all the way through that last bunch...

I stumbled on a page of notes I was keeping for some reason--mostly just titles. Seems like fun to post them here, so you can see how completely scattered I've been. A lot of them I have no idea about.

*
harold baines could hit in the clutch
la la la la la la la la not so much
*
let's keep Chris in Christmas
I know he likes it there
*
[Some song titles (I think):]
The blood of the locust [?]
Tracing out the frame

STORK VS. STOAT
If It Looks Like Wilford Brimley, You're Screwed [this is a reference to the remake of The Thing, but I can't recover the idea behind it)
The Bullet Washers
Bumped and Sticky
Too Drunk to Care
Epistemic Tractability
*
[I think these came from the anagrams of the London Underground thing?]
Thermohaline Warts (krautrock)

Rod, I've been thinking, and you know who your music reminds me of? An in-tune version of a cross between Eric Burdon and Tom Petty. No, seriously. I really mean it! big_smile
  • hartvan 2 months ago
Cool man! Let me know on FB who your friend is...there's a ghost of a chance I'd know him.
  • hartvan 2 months ago
Wow...thank you soooo much for your comments!!!! I have a LOT of listening to do! And yes, I'm in GR...come on over some time!
  •  plainwhitetoast 2 months ago
I've decided to tangent off of your title Supertanker, so not tied to it, but trying to somehow connect. I believe I am calling my piece Petroleum Rhapsody, but that may just be the working title.
  •  plainwhitetoast 2 months ago
just a note to say I am still ruminating on my half of Supertanker. Formulating what to sing and thereby justify (hopefully) the 5:25 running time of my "half." I'm also trying to come to a decision on whether my laziness is greater than how annoyed I am by some of the guitar parts. If I were a betting man, I'd put odds on lazy. I'm not feeling pressured so much as I am feeling time passing.
  •  jadesongbird 2 months ago
I was kidding. wink Sometimes my humor is too dry for type.
  •  crispy8888 2 months ago
Oblique Strategies - why did I not think of that this year? I have a deck in my office drawer, and totally forgot about them! Next year for sure. Congrats on the 21 - hope to see you back next year!
  •  donna 2 months ago
Ooops! Sorry, Rod. Yikes! I know how awful it is waiting to hear back. I was so pleased with your intrepretation, I simply commented in the song liner, forgetting to let you know on your soundboard (or by email). wink And then of course I got distracted. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa...
  •  zecoop 2 months ago
Yep, I did the same thing. I listened to you last year and *thought* you were on my watchlist already... <scratches head>... anyway, you are now and you were in my head, because I came back specifically to listen to your stuff. I have to fight time to even leave comments these days, ugh. Nice work, by the way and congrats on the win. It's taking a LONG time to get through we Michiganders. smile
  •  jadesongbird 2 months ago
She's not bad. She's just drawn that way.
  •  jadesongbird 2 months ago
I love the cabaret idea. I know it's slightly different, but Jessica Rabbit was my idol, and I love that smoky, dark, sultry style.
  •  dragondreams 2 months ago
Email winging its way through t'interwebby, Rod. smile
  •  jadesongbird 2 months ago
I also wanted to reply to your comments on "Now". Cabaret! That's perfect! I hadn't thought of clarinet, but now I really, really, really want to record a clarinet track.
  •  zecoop 2 months ago
Thanks for listening... smile Between you, @toms and a bunch of others, there's an overflow of abundance talent here in Michigan. smile Way to go!!!
  •  toms 2 months ago
That should be your (or my) next album title: "The Noumenal and the Phenomenal" big_smile
  •  jadesongbird 2 months ago
    Hello again!

Thanks for liking my page on Facebook. I've played at The Ark's Open Stage night a couple of times, but haven't yet played a show in A2. Do you ever play there?

To answer your question about my tuning on "A Different Light", yes, capo 2! Good ear. smile
  •  toms 2 months ago
No, really, no false modesty, no one ever used those words together in that context. They should have, long ago. big_smile
  •  toms 2 months ago
Rod, I don't think the words "phenomenal" and "your music" have ever been used in a sentence referring to me. smile Thank you. And congrats on your great - even phenomenal - win! I have a bit of catching up to do. You really cranked at the end, there!
  •  darcistrutt 2 months ago
Your post on liner notes in the forum just made me laugh out loud...really. big_smile
  • shelleymiller 2 months ago
Thanks for the kind words about my tunes! I know FAWM's over, but if you still want a Dusty to sing any of your songs, I'd be happy to take a crack.

re: "lagniappe" - Rod, you must know I just love it when I have to go to the dictionary!! :d. Not the French~English dictionary usually, mais il n'importe pas. Icing on the cake, oui?
  •  donna 2 months ago
Re 'Easy Way Out': A collab would be brilliant, Rod. smile I hear it fairly intense/angry, but not slow. What do you think?
  •  plainwhitetoast 2 months ago
Hey- just wanted to let you know I am still working on finishing supertanker. Need to record vocals and figure which guitar tracks to keep. Hopefully this weekend I'll have it ready.
  •  francesriley 2 months ago
    Hi!
Let me know if you still want vocals! I'd be happy to oblige, even in March!
  •  wyatt 2 months ago
LOL I hadn't got there yet smile I'm still running behind from puter crashes.
That's... different but that's part of what FAWM is about in my book --different"takes" on he same thing. Kinda like you indicated,on acoustic, one tends to " get in a rut. I certainly do.
I've got it playing again now. I can honestly say I like it.
I imagine it'll be quite well received
I'll get to the liner note a little later
    Thanks D B

  • arthurrossi 2 months ago
Now I have got another suggestion for the verses... You can find it at the bottom of the posting of the lyrics, if you like... hope it is slightly better...
  • arthurrossi 2 months ago
Hey, Rod!!! Thanks a lot for your comments!! I would have liked to hit the 100, but I won't manage it this time... I wrote another 3 sets of lyrics yesterday and today, but I am not content with them at all...
Concerning "The days are not my friends", would you really like to give it a try? Really? I have added you as a collab, so if you change your mind, just let me know...
By the way, as it has been the 4th line that was critical, I have deleted every 4th line of the verses and edited them a bit... I know, it is not optimal, but hopefully better than before... If you still like, please, feel free to "play" with the words... and I will also think of better solutions if I have still any ideas...
    Thanks a lot, Rod!!!

Thanx for the comment on "Rockette Leg Syndrome". Yeah, it's a solid body electric uke with some wah on it. Glad you liked it!
  •  dawnsoap 2 months ago
I don't go on the forums much, but my mom recently told me that the goal is to comment two time for every comment you get, and then I though. Ah! I am so far behind!!! It has been a fun morning of listening to some great tunes smile

Joe's was the spiritual center of my musical universe. Alas, the heavens fell years ago. I have a newspaper clipping of it. Now, I walk by and see only a large, corporate, brick and steel and glass monstrosity. This probably explains my politics.

I'm looking forward to March, so I can catch up with all that you have done, my musical internet friend!
  •  dawnsoap 2 months ago
I thought I'd let you know that I finally finished my first Canada song!!! Congratulations on your 17 songs by the way! You rock.

There may be some other things messed up too. I woulda' quit this puter a few days ago but the laptop is down too.
he message you got was supposed to go to Kevin.-This puter has got me bumfozzled to where I'm going in circles. It does seem like there was a message to or from you but so far I haven't found any
  •  petemurphy 2 months ago
Haha, yeah... but I did intend it to have a bit of a grimy, crunchy, falling apart kind of sound. I took the top end of some of the things, especially the vocals to make it less crisp (or maybe that's just my excuse for not being very good at mixing big_smile ). Thanks again!
  •  petemurphy 2 months ago
Hi Rod - thanks for the comment on my song. Yeah, it definitely 'falls apart' wink

As far as the effect on the vocal goes... I mainly used the Steinberg plugins that are included with Cubase/Nuendo (I've recently moved up to Nuendo, but I'm still doing some work in Cubase).
On the lead vocal I used Compression (can't remember which one) > Steingberg amp simulator > Steingberg Cloner (I think the setting was called 'robot voice' or something like that).
For the backing vocals on the chorus there's probably some compression and also the Steingberg 'Rotary' plugin.

I use various other things to get those kinds of sounds too. There's a plugin suite called the Kjaerhus Classic series which I like. I like the Chorus and the Phaser that they have. Oh, and the auto filter. And they're free! smile

Hi Rod(no-S)! Nyatiti anecdotes are not spam in my world. smile What a rare treat that mustn't been... How did you get so lucky? I had a friend in Seattle for awhile who invited me each year to visit during NW Folklife Festival. Got turned on to all kinds of international traditional music through her. That lit a fire under me to want to play one of the larger instruments in a marimba ensemble, which I finally fulfilled on at a weekend workshop! Follow your dreams!!! smile
  •  toms 2 months ago
Wombats do not hurl mints. Do they?
  •  plainwhitetoast 2 months ago
Did you put vocals on your half?
  •  plainwhitetoast 2 months ago
Howdy. Thanks for the comments. I'm working on the halfnhalf; hoping to get at least guitars done tonight. Pretty sloppy so far, but... that's... that's the sound I'm going for. Yeah, the sound I'm going for. Alright!

On "Stars Spinnimng" ,On rreading through it , I think slightly funky Folky and sing the c--semi talk the verses, whould probably work--Heck, that's what FAWM is about anyway in my book--spreading your wings--exolring new teritory. If you feel something for it, give it a shot. I havemn't had as many collabs this year as usual
My puter is still crashing periodicly co I could disappear at any time>)

Yes, exactly! That's the state of my memory. Sorry I mixed you up! tongue Whoever you are, you're music is great! wink (You know I'd never forget the man who took on the slings and arrows associated with "The Field"; and then my fave, "Rag & Bones Man"). Good to see you again!
  • barbara 2 months ago
Oh! and I might drop that capital Y - it really doesn't quite fit me anyway, but just encompassed a bigger sense of trust, which does fit. Thanks for letting me know it would work the other way too. Nothing wrong with a plain ol' love song.
  • barbara 2 months ago
Dude!! 14!!! (And by the sound of that title, I am headed directly to #5.... )
Thanks for your comments - love the sweater with arms too long! Great metaphor!

The pleasure is absolutely mine... Thanks, Rod...
  • arthurrossi 2 months ago
Great, Rod! Thanks a lot and first of all, once again I would like to beg your pardon for the "misunderstanding"... I am amazed at what a versatile artist you are! Such a great range from sad ballad-like songs, indie, pop, country all until something as serene as this one... What a wonderful catchy song, I still wonder how you have technically managed to integrate the background vocals in the chorus... Gorgeous!! The little daughter (4 years) of my guests here cannot get enough of it... Wished you could see her dance to this music... lol... Thanks so much, I am enjoying it a lot!!
  •  blindkiwi 2 months ago
When I listened to your place holder, it sounded like you were singing "you know, you know" so it was all your work really, but my fawm is so far from being done, i'll take anything at this stage big_smile
  •  downburst 2 months ago
Duh, wrote this on my own soundboard, deleted.
  • arthurrossi 2 months ago
Please, do not stop, I would love to hear it! - unless, of course, you would not like it that way... I am sorry for what happened, next time I am going to handle it differently, though, as soon as someone shows interest in a certain set of lyrics, I will add him/her as a collaborator immediately or at least take away the "needs-music" tag to avoid situations like this... Once again, I am sorry, Rod, noone could have known this, and as I said, I do not mind two versions, on the contrary, I would be delighted at hearing what you made out of it...

If you still like (and I hope you do), we can make a new posting for this...
  • deedee 2 months ago
Hi - sorry didn't read the comments below- wasn't trying to steal your thunder - no harm in two versions is there?

    cheers
  • arthurrossi 2 months ago
Hey, Rod! Today @deedee wrote me a kind message telling me he has already written music to the set of lyrics "Come on and be my girl".... I thought you should know about this in the case you still consider to musicify it eventually... To me, this would not represent any problem and I would look forward to even two possible versions, but I would also understand if someone does not like someone else using the same words in their songs...
  •  blindkiwi 2 months ago
If you want it, it's yours, if not, that's cool too

You know, you know, you know it might last forever

Behind it all, the light still shines

  • dlatmcg 2 months ago
Thanks... yes it probably is the same Kirt, I think he's mentioned going to those acoustic jams in A2. He did some nice pickin' on this tune, it really added alot to my dulcimer-like droning rhythm part.

  •  donna 2 months ago
Thanks for checking in on 'My Hand Knows the Way to the Blade', Rod.
Absolutely right about the bridge. I've changed it. Still a 'placeholder' but maybe not as prosaic as the original. wink
  •  francesriley 2 months ago
Well . . . Send me a track I can sing to, I guess, and maybe you can mix it in? Your mixing skillz are superior, I'd say! smile friley at citytel dot net.
  •  ellenpliss 2 months ago
haha, you are right again! on the Contagious song -- it starts out as a purely sexual connection...I was thinking of Springsteen and "wrap your legs across my engines" kind of stuff...then there HAS to be a long solo or something that shifts the mood (or maybe just rewrite!) because it all goes bad! I must be incapable of keeping a happy storyline big_smile

I updated the tag to upbeat snace smile
  •  ellenpliss 2 months ago
thank you for helping my words carry such weight with your comments. I was trying to articulate something big -- just can't say it well enough. I have a hard time with the poem vs. song thing -- my writing is too structured/simple for poetry, but too wordy for songs. I am stuck in no-mans land smile You are a wonderful teacher.
  •  duaneclancy 2 months ago
Those lyrics look soooooo lonely without having their inspiration take credit for his fine work ... seems like it would be better to just finish them and move on ... like shoot for 18 instead of 14 smile
  •  johncrossman 2 months ago
I dunno, real hymn tune or not on that one, I couldn't be bothered to think that deeply. big_smile Just sort of got the ol' choir of 3-4 me's together and let them wing it.

Say, you're a song and a half away from a fawm win, keep it up!
  •  andybalham 2 months ago
Glad you liked it, it was enjoyable to do. I look forward to hearing the final version.

Don't forget to ask the big "G" about the ticks and chiggers too ... btw, did you know that the military has stockpiles of 55 gal drums full of synthetic skunk oil for use as irritants, crowd control/dispersal, psy-ops for disruption/confussion, and for use in chemical warfare/decontamination training ... and it has been "ok'd" for use against indiginous populations (that means us)?
  •  jonniegrunge 2 months ago
Yeah, I could see how singing 'Unexploded Rodent Ordinance Disposal Squad' would be a pain. Hell, I had to retype it twice now. And when I first saw the title I thought of Rodents of Unusual Size (ROUS') from The Princess Bride.

Hi, Rod! This is a light FAWM year as I've gone back to finish a degree and am taking 10 credits currently. I'm thinking of FAWM but not on it much. Thanks for popping by and saying hi though! Maybe more this summer . . . or in March over Spring Break.

Rod, of course, it is ok, it is much more than that, it a pleasure and an honor to me!!! Thanks so much for this great surprise, I did not expect it!!! Great, great music here, there is a sensitive, almost even slightly sentimental tone in your voice, which I like a lot, fantastic!!! I know, most probably it was not that easy to put this one to music because of the length of the lines (I am aware of it!), but you managed it brilliantly!! I enjoy it a lot, thank you so much!!!

Hi, Rod, I am sorry for the belated answer... First of all, thank you for your profound and that kind comment and once again for the collab! It is always a pleasure and an honor to me!
Second, a big, big compliment on knowing about Tyrol, you know, even many Europeans do not know about let us say our own "geographical special features" here... In fact, I am Austrian (so my mother tongue is basically German, though some Austrian prefer to say they speak Austrian and not German... lol...) with some Balkan roots and some connections to Italy where I have been leaving some time ago... Quite complicated all in all, so one could say I am a European in the basic sense of the word...

Howdy! Did you have a first half of a halfnhalf called Supertanker to send me? Just the last 10 seconds?

I'm going to do those halfnhalf pairings from the thread, but if you have something, I want to try doing it (and then make you do another with someone else in the thread smile)

That was very fast, thanks, Rod! I enjoy it a lot, a lot, a lot, and I must admit I had no doubts about it that, from the musical point of view, it would become a wonderful song!!! I LOVE IT!!! I like the (musical) contrast between the verses and the chorus (by the way, wonderfully how you sang "two"!). Another highlight is also the variation of the melody during these lines
    "Silly memories keep reeling,
    again I am where I am…".
It is a pleasure and a special honor to me every time again to collaborate with you! Thank you so much!!!

RE: killing fields of cabot cove - stevekey showed strong interest - I thought he has a pleasing and appropriate style... but I haven't heard anything from him lately, maybe I'll give him a nudge

RE: Mitt the Mutt - the songwriters tools - the pick, the notepad document, the rhyming dictionary - are powerful, and should be applied with restraint, and only in the cause of goodness and niceness.
