I started out as a DJ in Philadelphia at WFIL. Then on to television in 1956 with American Bandstand which aired every weekday afternoon for half an hour in the early days. The show went national with a one hour segment on Saturdays in 1964. A.B. was the longest running show on ABC when it was cancelled in 1989.
I guess what I'm most proud of is the early role that American Bandstand had regarding racial integration on televised broadcast media. During the heyday of segregation when the civil rights movement was in its infancy we showcased African-American performers on prime-time television, thereby introducing a largely white audience to a truly inclusive spectrum of American music.
I was inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 and I celebrated my 82nd birthday last year. I hope they never quit calling me "America's Oldest Teenager". I love the kids...they were great back then and they're great today!
I'll use the old American Bandstand "Rate-A-Record" system with a scale of 35-98. Because no song is SO bad that it should rate less than 35, and no song is perfect. If it's "got a good beat and it's danceable" I'll let you know.
HAPPY NEW FAWM!!!
