Bio

Hi all. My fifth FAWM. Always a blast.

Expect a searing 14-part indictment of modern society, composed and performed entirely on a pair of spoons. Or perhaps a bunch of the usual folky guitar songs.

--------

Update (March 1st): Whew. Left it to the wire this year. A huge thank you to everyone for listening and commenting, and to my talented friends Scott and Phil for the collaborations. I'm off to sit on a beach for a few days, but look forward to hearing what everyone else has been up to on my return.

(And stay tuned for the 'Sally You Fool' demo. Coming soon.)

Hello Mike, thanks for the fine comments. Really appreciated, especially coming from my absolute FAWM favourite. Checked out your website too, some really good stuff there also. Your FAWM 2009 songs are really good, would be nice if you'd put them up for download as well. Or make an album one could buy, I would in an instant. I'm sort of amazed you don't have a record contract, I guess you're not interested in that, cause lack of fantastic songs there's obviously not. There's some special personal quality to your music that's very rare.

Hullo, Mike! Thanks so much for the kind comment. I really, really enjoy your music here, and I hope I'll see and hear more from you in the future! I think it's a good possibility. I'm glad I found you here: you serve up lots of really excellent tunes! I'd love to collab with you sometime, if you think you'd like to. smile
  •  Fine Excuses 3 weeks ago
Cheers for the nice comment on Yellow Lines, Mike - I was quite pleased with that lyric, actually. Doesn't happen often wink
  •  Phil Norman 3 weeks ago
Leave it to the Australian to ask who was playing the didge. No bonus points, I'm afraid. Just a loop that's been cluttering up my hard drive that finally found a home! And I'm afraid I'll earn no bonus points from you for my Loteria song, either -- it could only break your heart if you're not allowed to eat Mexican food.
  • benn 3 weeks ago
thanks very much. "can we talk about it" is really great. a bit beatlesy.
  •  isaac quatorze 3 weeks ago
thanks for stopping by, Mike smile it wasn't the Peter Gabriel part that i worried you'd be insulted by, but the comparison to another artist in general. a lot of people take issue with comments that include "this reminds me of [artist name]" so i wanted to be sure you took it in good spirit!

having come here to leave this message, i am overjoyed to see that you have 3 brand new songs i have yet to hear. you are so very on top of your game this year, Mike... keep 'em coming!
  •  Phil Norman 3 weeks ago
Any ideas bouncing around in your brain that might lead to another collaboration between us?
  •  Scott O. Clamp 3 weeks ago
You're very kind. Re: blunt instruments... lest I be accused of compliment fishing, let me say that your Tom Waits comment captures my point very well. And as much as I love Tom Waits, I wouldn't inflict his voice on your songs for all the world.
  • shoepixie 3 weeks ago
Hallo! I just wanted to leave you a wee note to say that I listened to your songs, and I adore them. Every single one. Zondar is a lovely, lovely story that tastes like honey and brown sugar in my head, and Arrows is..just gorgeous. Input is very fun as well, esp the liner notes, and the lyrics of course. Thank you muchly for sharing these lovely tunes!
I am taking my verry first baby steps into making music, and it's nice to see just regular blokes doing it. At least I assume you are. smile

hey, just to let you know, my good friend angelina's song (which I see you tried to listen to) has a demo up now.. http://fawm.org/songs/2078/

    as always, you're sounding great..

Thanks for the nice comments on "Holiday." Curious to check out your tunes.
  •  songsville 1 month ago
Thanks for your comments. I may have been feeling a little Morriseyish, yes, as I am in the middle of a Smiths-inspired collab, something I have never tried before ... so thanks! ONe of the greatest singers defo.
  • Magnus Løken 1 month ago
Thanks for telling me! The demos should be fixed now, I forgot to set the files as public. smile
  • jamie?! 1 month ago
Heyy thanks for the comment. Positive comments are always welcome. smile. I must say, and album performed entirely on spoons sounds pretty much amazing. Haha.

  •  Halfpenny Orchestra 1 month ago
Mike, thanks for signing up for Halfpenny Orchestra’s Loteria Challenge. You have been dealt: Las Jaras (The Arrows, No. 31). Put that strange intrigue to work... smile In the description of your song, please include the subject of the card and its number. Also, please include loteria as a tag. Have fun!

I _don't_ have any ideas, and I've long known that you would jealously guard your triangle. I went and bought my own on eBay. Turned out to be a rhombus with terrible sustain.

If you're in a comedic mood, we could try some kind of Brandy and Monica "That Boy is Mine" sort of arrangement.

If you're in an earnest mood, there is some poor protagonist whose life we could ruin.

I also remember pulling an excellent GBV cover off your website years ago ("Best of Jill Hives," I think). If you were in the mood to pay tribute to the best Who-sounding band from Dayton, Ohio, I'd be up for that.

Or option D, with is "other."

Hi, Mike. A pleasure to be here. Loving what you've done so far (but that's no surprise).
  •  Jharms 1 month ago
Mike! I've been listening to your Nihilism Calypso Blues for a year now, eagerly waiting for what the next year will bring! Can't wait to see what you'll bring to the table.

And despite my intentions, with the schoolwork I've got piled up, I'm afraid I'll be rocking the wimpy half-FAWM with you.
  •  Eric Distad 1 month ago
    Hey Mike,

I'm glad to see you're around! I'm looking forward to hearing more from you. (In fact, I was just listening to some of your FAWM 2006 work on my MP3 player. It's still lovely! )
  •  Old Lost John 1 month ago

Are you telepathic by chance, Mike?

The thing is, at approximately the same time you posted in my soundboard, I was at the music store, buying a guitar... neutral
  •  oddbod 1 month ago
Now I did try spoons in a previous KVR contest before, but I don't think I've ever brought them out for FAWM. Maybe I should jump on your bandwagon. wink

~Put your back in it boys, the good ship is sinking~

Hey Mike, can't wait to hear your output this year. smile

Mike, good to see yet another KVR artist on board. Looking forward to listening!

Mike, looking for The Clearing reincarnated. Others posting here, head to Mike's site and listen. Wear something warm, because goosebumps are on their way.
  • Krista Brindle 1 month ago
Hey Mike! Can't wait to hear your new stuff--I was just listening to The Bells the other day, which is just as beautiful as when I first heard it.
  •  oddbod 2 months ago
Hi Mike. Here we go again. Any plans to revive an operetta this year?
  • Resonance 2 months ago
Awaiting your flood of songwriting goodness, mate... I've got my headphones ready!
  •  Scott O. Clamp 2 months ago
I have a note to myself from the beginning of March 2009. "Remember to ask Mike Debenham to collaborate next February. Get oil changed."

Can we collaborate this February? There, half the list done already.
