Artist Bio

Influences:   Bon Iver, Pink Floyd, Gillian Welch, Radiohead, Roger Clyne, early REM. And lots and lots of other completely unrelated stuff, but that's what seems to be guiding my writing right now.

It's 2017 and I'm back after a few years away. I had a different vision this year, and it came to fruition in the way I'd hoped. This was the album I intended to write in February. I didn't expect (or intend, honestly) to hit 14, but it happened and I'm pleased.

One of my biggest side goals was to play my own acoustic drums on everything, and that worked out nicely. I've only been playing about eighteen months, and I learned more in this month than most of the prior twelve.

I abstained from collabs this year, minus a silly one @devin talked me into at the last minute. I love working with you all, and I will again. But this February needed to be a solo journey. We'll see each other in 50/90 or next FAWM.

A world of thanks to those of you who've taken the time to listen, especially those of you who engaged with the whole effort. I'm writing these songs for myself, and I feel incredibly privledged to be able to share them with artists who share the same goals and passions.

Hi John-Thanks for your comments on our porcupine song!

  • @negasi  6 weeks

Also I promise I'm getting to commenting on the last couple I've missed (listened to it all multiple times, just dealing with Strep Throat in the hosue atm). I actually have everything but the 1 that it wouldn't let me download, downloaded and put in a nice folder called "DAS BINKY" (well it's really a sub folder in the 2017 FAWM folder but I digress). Expect comments on the last couple! 😁

That was probably the first "MEME" or funny video that I saw if you don't count the Numa Numa Song (which I never found funny, I used to listen to it on repeat because I love that song.) I watched the video again and man, even after all these years it still is just as funny. Holds up well with time. Thanks for the blast from the past <3.

Lumberjack metal... And lo! A genre was born!
The accidental Metallica reference is in the harmony leads. It's all a bit suspiciously like the refrain from To Live Is To Die...

  • @johncrossman  7 weeks

XTC! You (and@owl) win! Random-seeming, one would hope on my song, More. I may take another crack at a better recording on that one...

  • @ericdistad  7 weeks

Thanks for the comment spree Binky! I very much appreciate the comments on I Am Not A Gun! Your comment means I succeeded in my goal... and that means a lot to me!

On All In With You... It's not actually alt-tuned. (Sorry!) I'm just playing weird voicings that leave one or two strings to drone. That second chord is a Bmaj7sus4 with the high B and E ringing as dissonant drones. (I'm a dork... 😀 )

  • @nancyrost  7 weeks

Thanks, Binky - I you too!

  • @ericdistad  7 weeks

Thanks Binky - I hear you on the keeping the soundscape in check- I've been opting for more live acoustic takes (which has it's own set of problems!) lately, with the idea that I don't want to put a ton of work into a demo... but when I do go to town I tend to overdo it wall-of-sound style and I need to fight that tendency! I've recorded and mixed live drums and that can be a nightmare waiting.

I need to get some mix tips from you sometimes - i still feel like my mixes are to cluttered... probably from me not limiting/high pass/low pass enough.

BTW - Congrats on passing the 14 mark!

I have faith in you. And your inherent inability to not let this thing go by without showing it who's boss. And by that, I either mean Tony Danza or the infamous, not-yet-extinct Das Binky Kollektiv.

  • @yam655  8 weeks

Congratulations for making it to the Century Club! 😀

  • @sapient  8 weeks

That is, without hyperbole, my favourite comment this FAWM!
Congratulations on the Friday afternoon drinking. That's the way to spend a day! 😁

Dude, hit me up if you are looking for 1 MOAR track. I'll hatch something if you desire.

Or, just hit me. I kinda like it.

  • @sapient  8 weeks

Hurrah! So glad you both approve of how those tricksy words wove their way into the song.
    Thanks for the inspriation! 😁

  • @negasi  8 weeks

Hey dude, you inspired this one 😀

  • @cynthiawolff  Feb 17

    Just looking at them now..
I have a friend with a four string one...
I have small hands and I'm short..that's why I play a lot of uke...but just dusted off my baritone uke and low the lower sound...
Your work is great ..you are very talented..

  • @johncrossman  Feb 16

Remember @tempbinky? So moody that one, almost temperamental. Although he was certainly no @binky83.

I'm saving up listening to your songs, considering whether I can use them out twist them somehow to help me write more songs. I like the one word title approach and I'll be back to listen.

  • @nancyrost  Feb 15

Cliffhanger is the end of the season, not the series. 😀

  • @ericdistad  Feb 14

Thanks man! I'm glad you spotted the litany!

Rebooting Dune, you say? Off to do research...

    Ok. I'm in!

I may have to do a Dune song.

  • @acousticmaddie  Feb 13

Thanks so much for your Nice comments on Seaweed!

  • @fearlessflight2014  Feb 13

Thanks for your encouraging feedback on 'lucky girl', I really appreciate you taking the time, will have a listen to what you are up to while I'm here!

  • @kristi  Feb 9

Thank you for your kind comments on my lyric, This is Not That Story. There's music now if you're interested: http://fawm.org/songs/67930/

  • @debs  Feb 8

    Well played, Binks. Well played.

  • @negasi  Feb 7

Hey you're the one creating the beautiful songs for me to say nice things about, all the thanks goes to you! 😀 it's also nice seeing you around I need my Binky fix 😀 I'm really hoping to get back into FAWM with the same sort of gusto that I had before I had kids so it feels great to be back and active. Hope you're doing well! <3

  • @debs  Feb 7

Oh my gosh, Binky. Tell me you didn't actually play Firehose for your daughter! 😁

  • @skinkmiffet  Feb 7

I like your advice on figuring out which sounds to use later! Today's effort started with a mission to avoid getting lost in patch selection land, and I promptly ended up in chiptune territory lol but I had a blast and it was way quicker.

  • @sarahk Feb 6

So I'm insane, huh? Gee, thanks!!! 😉 Glad you enjoyed "My Gravitational Getaway."

  • @valeriecox  Feb 6

John, hey! How are you sir? Busy I guess. I see you've done some things.

  • @chasingandromeda  Feb 5

Good to see you back at it.

  • @arthurrossi Feb 4

I would like to thank you very much for your lovely and thoughtful comment! It was a great pleasure reading it!

  • @sarahk Feb 4

Can't tell you how much in means to get your feedback on my stuff. Thanks for swinging by and commenting!

  • @hbusse Feb 3

Hey Binky! Thanks for the listen on The Battle. Yes I know what you mean about wanting a "percussion extravaganza"! Might be fun to flesh that out later. For now, writing with very strict parameters - "45 mins while the baby naps and don't make much noise"- is an interesting exercise in creativity. 🙂

  • @devin  Feb 2

Thanks for commenting on our stuff... 6 hours of beer drinking got us through day 1.

Re: "I should make singing 'I'm an asshole' into it's own song"... don't you realize I have people for that now?

    Great to have you back.

  • @sarahk Feb 1

Wishing you an effing fantastic FAWM! Can't wait to see what you come up with!

  • @dragondreams  Feb 1

    Thank you, sir. 😀
The guitar is a Tanglewood nylon electro-acoustic through a large diaphragm condenser into Reaper. The reverb is a VST plugin convolver that allows really long decay tails to be mixed with relatively short, small room models. 😀

  • @orinoco  Feb 1

Ha, thanks! Have a good FAWM this year 😀

  • @devin  Feb 1

Welcome back sir. Here if you need anything!

  • @hbusse Feb 1

Hey old friend! Glad you're back!

  • @arthurrossi Feb 1

Hey! Very nice to see you here again! I wish you a beautiful and prolific FAWM!

  • @carleybaer  Jan 31

Hi John! Happy FAWMing 😀 Can't wait to hear what you've got for us this year!!

  • @chasingandromeda  Jan 31

Good to see you back. Looking forward to your meanderings.

  • @cts  Jan 31

All the best on your musical journey, my man! Good to have you back!

  • @negasi  Jan 31

One of the first places I come every year on my first log in of the new FAWM. Can't wait to hear some tunes! <3

  • @leslie  Jan 31

The world can always benefit from more music from you. Enjoy the journey.

  • @marklberry Jan 31

Are you up and running this year? Looking forward to hearing your new work.

  • @alboe Jan 30

Hope you have a great FAWM this year.

  • @kristian  Jan 30

so.. just the other day, one of our collabs was liked by this really cute girl on soundcloud... poor thing though, she seemed to have forgotten most of her clothes on her profile picture... awwww, silly girl. I bet she really like it though.

I guess no collabs mean no more girl fans with no clothes on .... *sigh*

  • @petra777  Jan 29

    *waves*

  • @debs  Jan 29

You're back? YOU'RE BACK!!! <3 * dances * This makes me very happy, my friend. Your presence continues to be felt on my fridge.

  • @kahlo2013  Jan 29

Looking forward John to some wildly crazy awesome music coming from the burbs between Madison and Verona!

  • @thetau  Jan 29

    Hello again Bink
May the FAWM be with you
    Russ 😀

  • @billysea  Jan 29

Awww, that is a shame. I normally put together a great "what vendor party are we going to crash tonight" list for HIMSS 😀 In fact, just got a ticket for HISTalkapaloza in my inbox yesterday.

Next year HIMSS is Vegas, if it looks like you may go, let's connect early so I can add you to my distro 😁

  • @unpronounceable Jan 29

How in the heck are you, sir? 😀

  • @billysea  Jan 29

Hello there Mr. Binky. I hear you with the commitments. I'm home for 14 days this year so may do more listening than anything else but always look forward to hearing something new from the man who robotized me 😀

  • @ericdistad  Jan 29

There once was a writer named John
whose songs were never a yawn
    for tunes of all kinds
you could rely on his mind
It's too bad this limerick isn't nearly as good

Welcome back John! I'm looking very much forward to hearing new stuff from you! Let's rock this joint!

  • @standup  Jan 29

Look forward to hearing more binky.

  • @ductapeguy  Jan 29

Yay. Binky is back in the saddle.

  • @tcelliott  Jan 29

Heya, Bink... great to see you here. Let's get our rock on.

  • @johncrossman  Jan 29

Updated your spectacle prescription, eh? Oh, maybe that's not what you mean by different vision. I'm still looking forward to hearing your extra-rhythmic contributions!

  • @nancyrost  Jan 29

So good to see you back here. Intrigued by your vision for this year!
