Bio

second time at FAWM.

hoping for:
1) a more consistent year-- last year only gave me 2 keepers.
2) better recording quality (i'm buying a microphone)
3)better arrangement (right word? i mean, occasionally have more than one guitar and one vocal. some percussion or cheesy keyboard needs to get involved)

any type of comments are appreciated-- cheering and criticisms. any tips regarding recording would be appreciated, though i'm fairly low-budget and very low-expertise.

this is where i'm sticking some old songs i'm recording as a warm-up: http://benjamincarroll.bandcamp.com/

Thank you! And, what you are hearing is a little toy airplane that I've had since I was a baby. I saw it lying around and figured I would use it. Haha. big_smile
  • Hannah Groves 2 days ago
Thank you for the feedback. smile
  •  Linzi 3 days ago
...than bless your cotton socks big_smile I was so worried about this one. I like it, but my performance is quite the shambles! Thank you so much.
  • Catherine 4 days ago
thanks for letting me know - the song should be accessible now smile i'm only just catching up with the fawm world again, but i'm about to listen to your stuff. It all looks intruiging, so it'd better be as good as last year! (no pressure! tongue)
  • Happy Atheist 4 days ago
Hey, Ben! You and toms bringing up Wittgenstein inspired my Number Four! Maybe you'd like to check it out when you get a chance? It features quite a cast of characters. Grin. (Still thinking about AJ Ayer... reportedly, his near-death conversion is disputed--but yeah, ya really gotta watch out for those salmon bones!)
  •  Rick Cannon 5 days ago
haha. Yes! I knew I could get you to come around. tongue
Super psyched you like the new track. I'm feeling better and better about this year every day..
  •  Rick Cannon 5 days ago
Thanks, man. It's a bit of a shame you like the acoustic stuff better... I'm much more band-focused these days. haha.
  • Dillon Richards 6 days ago
It's weird that you said that, because I had two vocal parts in that exact spot before I edited them out. I guess I should have left them in. tongue I'm really glad you liked the song! Thanks for the listen!
  •  Yakobo 6 days ago
Yeah, that sounds like a good option to try, I'll fire you over an email right after I listen to your number 3!
  •  Scott O. Clamp 6 days ago
"i was thinking, for a collab later in the month, how about i write a lyric and you put it to music and sing it, maybe?"

I would be all over that! That would be great... I LOVE your lyrics. I think I mentioned that.

If you want to send 'em privately, you can send them to autoclamp@gmail.com. Let's do that!

Ok, I've tried it through yet another site and this time the URL looks a lot more like you said, ends in .mp3

Problem is that most of the other ones seem to work for me but not anyone else.
  •  Yakobo 6 days ago
Can't see mp3 anywhere in the URL I got from Google. Technology really is the pits sometimes sad
  •  Yakobo 1 week ago
So annoying about my file, it was playing on my computer last night but it's not on this uni one. Have you tried downloading it? That's what I always have to do with yours for some reason.

I haven't donated enough to FAWM for them to host it, that's $25. I might try google docs.

PS I stole your song title! Don't think you were the first to use it either, mind you tongue

Well, that's the best comment I've gotten. Any time I'm compared to Brand New, I'm extremely happy. They're my favorite band, and I can only strive to be half the man Jesse Lacey is.
Glad you liked the song. Hopefully you'll like whatever comes next.
  • Louis Gray 1 week ago
Hey, thanks for your comment. I appreciate it.

Ben, regarding the weird shifted vocal sound on the beginning of the chorus of my weird tune "I Got a Bullet," here's how I did it:

I'm using Logic, but you can do this in just about any computer multi-track sound program. I created a duplicate vocal track and ran the vocal through a really tight EQ and a distortion effect. You have to monkey around with it to get it just right. In Logic there's a channel setting called "Telephone." It's also there in GarageBand. It basically squeezes the sound in the same way without having to do all that fiddling. Thank you for your comment. Have an awesome FAWM!
  •  Yakobo 1 week ago
sweet, sounds like you're having a whole lot of '58 fun! Those songs are sounding propergood. You've found your voice and you're writing to it's strengths. And how can you listen to the likes of Bend Sinister when your lyrics are so infinitely better??

Looking forward to hearing your fawmings
  • PlushBaby 1 week ago
Thanks Ben, enjoy fawm and we'll give your stuff a listen, rock hard!
  • Kramer's Dog 2 weeks ago
    Haha. Yep, that'd be it.
I'm looking forward to hearing some of that cheesy keyboard you mentioned, as well. wink
  •  Scott McBride 2 weeks ago
Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you're enjoying it. Looking forward to your FAWM output.
  • Errol 2 weeks ago
    Allo Ben!

I did do Nanowrimo. That's how I found out about FAWM. I like doing Nanowrimo too, a lot! big_smile I'm even more social in Nanowrimo. It's scary. big_smile
  • Embers of Autumn 2 weeks ago
I like Bright Eyes--you might have to struggle to find too many songs of mine that actually sound like Oberst, though. I try to be diversified in style as much as I can.
  • Embers of Autumn 2 weeks ago
Heard one of your last year songs on Charlie Cheney's show (from last night). I liked it a lot. Also like your influences.
  • tintedaudio 2 weeks ago
sweet, i'll be watching yours aswell mate, look forward to it. Still don'y know if i'll manage 14 but i'll give it my best shot,
    Neil

  • Christmas Card 3 weeks ago
    Cheers Ben!
  •  Rick Cannon 3 weeks ago
Thanks, man! And that's pretty awesome. (:
I'll definitely be checking up on your stuff again this year.

Dude, you have Faker in your influences! That's completely radical. I love them. haha.
  •  Scott O. Clamp 3 weeks ago
Benarol! Glad to see you're back.

Collaborating would be great! Last year was the first year I did a lot of them, and each one has that "do you want to do lyrics, or music, or both, or what?" sort of beginning. So we'll figure out what's easiest, or what you feel like doing at the time. It'll be fun!
