Influences: Alison Krauss, Ingrid Michaelson, Brandi Carlile
This is my second year with FAWM and I am excited to be back. I originally thought I was going to focus on music for kids, but the muse just doesn't seem to have that in mind for me this time around.
So, look forward to a mix of acoustic folk, ukulele songs (both happy and sad), and hopefully a couple of songs for kids, and maybe even one with my kids!
Open to collabs!

If you can make it ... No suggestions coming in for the FOP, so how about the Applebee's in Roseville -1893 W Highway 36, Roseville, MN 55113; maybe at 11:30 AM this Saturday for the FOP?
Hey, well, it truly sounds like you have a good handle on it. From this point forward you'll probably just confirm your good work. There's no "mojo" to this, don't buy into that 😀 And, most hardware, software is simply ieee.org compliant, so affectivley the same, sans options and branding. Generally, what sounds good, is good. The sm58 is the 57 w/pop spit screen. The Hz response is negledgable, and I guess due to the screen. I never ask their engineers, who get back quick to any questions of their products.
And, as I like to say, audio is like a mirror, it only reflects what's in front of it. Processsing and stepping randomly on a signal is not a method. What you are doing is. And, that's about it. I believe your next take will be it, since this one is usable as demo! 😀 Sorry to open a can o worms, but glad you march forward, too! Have a great new year!
Hey, well I don't mind shooting ez suggestions. One other thing to do is put a contact mic on the Uke, -- you may get more to mix with. Your mic box works well, I could "hear", so to speak, the fullness. As you may read some folks here/fawm do, they hang a blanket in a closet and back into the closet. That sound deadened backing, and singing into a mic box should kill any room ambience, -- cheap way to go. And wear cotton t-shirt non-noisy clothes, no squeaky chairs.
And, different mics have different "coloring". Some have a proximity affect, e.g., i.e., SM57 does. So if you mouth right on it, up close, --more bottom, warmth, and no phantom power needed. Your mic now is nicely bright and airy, needs power? Is a USB mic? Or you have a DI, then go to your PC/MAC? Others, many non-pros use MXL 770, (MXL series is a lot of mic, for cheap... there are others), anyway the 770 has two filters built in. But, active, so need phantom power again.
Musiciansfriend, Amazon have many contact, clip on mic to choose from for the Uke.
Ah, that's the inspiration. He sounds like quite a character! 😁
Thanks for the nice comment on "Bouree/Beret." I enjoyed writing the lyric, but Bach did the heavy lifting on that one.
Thanks for the thanks, glad I didn't step on any toes. Someone once gave me some feedback and said it was because it was a really good song that could be great. You know you have something there and you want to make it even better. There's usually a forum thread for constructive feedback too and remember to take it all with a grain of salt, mine included. If one guy in Wisconsin says, "hey, that word sounds weird" and everyone else loves that word, he's probably wrong. 😉
I like constructive feedback when it confirms what I already thought, like when I tack on a bridge cuz I feel I have to and someone calls me out on it.
Also, it looks like you had a great month and you have some new songs! I'll check more out in the near future.
I hope your FAWM was great! I left a post in the Midwest: Twin Cities forum, to see if anybody wants to get together for an After-FAWM party. Reply there if you want to do it!
Running into a bear indeed can be scary or tragic -- it's that scariness I'm using it for -- but I think it adds a nice, if subtle, bit of an edge to your song as well. Kids' imaginations can indeed run towards the dark and scary sometimes; I don't think there's anything wrong with obliquely acknowledging that in your track.
But of course, it's plainly a fully valid decision to focus solely on joy on happiness in Bright Sunny Day if that's your goal for this song, and, if so, you may indeed want to reconsider the bear a bit, as I think it does add a hint of darkness.
Just listened to (and commented on) Bright Sunny Day, and I couldn't help but grin at the bear line in particular, in part because, by pure coincidence, it happens to anticipate the next development in my own ongoing FAWM kids' narrative concept album. I guess bears and wandering kids is a time-honored staple. 😀
A kids' singalong - I love it!
Hey, I saw your post about kids songs. Although I have stopped doing this as a full time gig. I did do this exclusively for 15 years. Did 29 CDs for children. Search Mr. Billy on CD Baby if you have any questions let me know. Also you might want to join CMNonline.org it's a children's music network. Pretty cool, kinda super liberal (if that matters or not to you). Good luck!
You're welcome. But I'm blaming him if it sticks with me all day at work tomorrow! 😂
Thank you for your comment. You raise a good point with regard to 'perfume'. As ever, I will wait to see how the scene evolves in the mind's eye of the future collaborateur.
I don't THINK I use google drive... but you can email me direct to work on the song - firstname.lastname@example.org
Hi Alison, if you can wait a few days, I could continue with the lyrics. Work has me busy at the moment.
Hello Alison! Looking forward to hearing your songs!
Welcome back fellow Minnesotan! Have a great FAWM!
Nice to 'meet' you - have a wonderful FAWM!
Thanks for the watch! Happy FAWM! 😀
